Title: Winter in NE WA is not looking good
Post by: huntnnw on January 08, 2013, 12:24:40 AM
The deer herd could be facing another bad one around here...We got dumped on again and it was on top of 18-24" of existing snow in most of the areas i hunt 2800-3000 feet. There is  artic air moving in on top of this warming phase we have which will turn the snow to rock hard ice making it near impossible for them to get to food now. I was up in ferry 2 weeks ago where I hunt and it didnt look good there then..4ft at my stand and all the deer had moved to low as they could down the canyon...hows it looking where u hunt?

cant even get where i hunt in ne right now.  people who live at lower elevations that deer are moving to need to put out feed for them, and start killing yotes, anything to help the deer get through the winter

About 3 1/2 feet on the ground here on the south end of Stevens county just north of Deer Park!   Not looking good for the deer in this area!  I fed all winter at my house last year and had 15-20 deer every night.  After the big dump we got about 3 weeks ago every deer disappeared and I haven't had a single one even come snooping for food since.   :dunno:
Not optimistic that its gonna change any time soon!!

Not looking good at all. I am feeding about 40 deer and 50 turkeys right now. I have even contacted the Mule Deer Foundation and the NWTF to see if they help out on feed.   Looks like it will be up to me. Anyone looking for cheap?? corn there is a place in Rearden that sells whole or cracked for $.16 a lb.  I have gone through 2 1/2 bins of apples, 2,000 lbs of sweet feed, and 700 lbs of corn and it's only Jan!!!!!!!  AND, I heard a wolf howl across the lake from me at 5:30 Sat. morning. Predators will have easy pickings by the end of winter.

The Methow isn't looking to good either before today on the valley floor there was already 2.5 feet with everything covered with a sticking snow and today we got an additional foot.  Have a yearling sleeping on my porch. Here in town it is a 100.00 fine if caught feeding anything but song birds and I can't afford even that right now

The thing that is going to help the deer out is it was a late winter and the deer in the Methow were fat. So hopefully that will help carry them thru a little longer.
