Title: High-Standard sportking jamming!
Post by: Karl Blanchard on January 19, 2013, 07:20:22 PM: So I picked up a N.I.B. High-Standard Sport King for $250 the other day :IBCOOL: took it out yesterday and it would not cycle worth a darn. I think it is the clip but can't be sure. Does anyone have any experience with them and this problem?

Post by: Karl Blanchard on January 19, 2013, 07:27:50 PM: It is super clean and well oiled. Everything I have read says don't use high velocity stuff in these old models. It would do this about every 4 or five rounds with both federal and remington ammo. It would bend the heck out of the bullet! I read a few things about it and it sounds like a mag problem. One guy talked about "modifying the clip" with pliers but didn't go into detail. When it cycled it shot AWESOME!!!!!

Also, it may just need 100 rounds through it to break it in.

Post by: Karl Blanchard on January 19, 2013, 07:32:24 PM: Only have one mag unfortunetely. I put about 200 through it today. I am gonna strip it down and clean it again and then take it out tomorrow and shoot it some more so we will see

Post by: Sportfury on January 20, 2013, 08:21:57 AM: I have had issues with a TC .22 rifle that I have. If I do not have the ammo pushed fully back in the clip then it would jam. When it shoots it shoots great, but it is finicky with how the ammo sits in the clip.

Happens on the first round or last round? The mag spring is new I suspect. Probably just too much tention but the lips should hold it at less angle when the slide is stripping the round from the mag follower. Also, much of that High Velocity ammo is 40-42gn lead bullets. Most Standard Velocity is 32-36gn. The heavier bullets make the cartridge some .990" where-as the lighter bullets make the cartridge much shorter at .960". This is enough to create feed problems in some guns. Those High Standards are target pistols, designed for target or at least Standard Velocity cartridges. Try some standard velocity in it before you modify the mag lips. Otherwise High Standard is http://highstandard.com (http://highstandard.com) and I'm told they have good customer service.

Post by: Fisherdave10 on January 21, 2013, 12:59:37 PM: I think your magazine feed lips need to be bent a tiny bit tighter to prevent the round from popping up. I did that on my dad's Mk II clone (AMT Lightning) and that fixed most of the feeding issues.

Later, replacing the extractor with a Volquartzen fixed the extraction issues.

Now it runs pretty well.

If he got 200 rounds though it, I'm doubting that it was assembled incorrectly.

Post by: Karl Blanchard on January 21, 2013, 08:33:11 PM: Thanks guys for all the suggestions. There is not really a consistant pattern with the jams. I tried everything yesterday. I loaded different amounts in the clip from single rounds to all ten and I couldn't nail down anything. I will say one thing about this pistol, it is a shooter! When it cycled it was a blast! I plan on trying some standard velocity ammo in it at some point (if I can ever find any) for not only the jamming issue but I have also read of some problems with the older high standards frames cracking under high velocity pressures and I don't want that to happen! If the standard velocity ammo doesn't solve the problem then I will attempt to "modify" the magazine. Thank you all again! One thing I have come to love about this site is it really doesn't matter what random question you ask there is someone on here that can answer it! I use it more than google :chuckle:

Post by: mountainman on January 21, 2013, 10:31:23 PM: If not already using them, try plated standard velocity bullets. If that doesnt work, try stretching the mag spring slightly. Next, try bending the spring lips ever so slightly. Next step would be a recoil spring replacement. Or, like Kracker said, just leave the work to a competent smith! :)

Steve I have a Taurus TCP 380 that you can put together wrong and it will shoot all day only occasionally jamming :tup: yes it happens.
