I was drawn for the late season. i could find an elk to save my keyster. Of course i'm a newbie to the area. i found old sign thats it. i was wondering if any one got one. :dunno:
-
Not sure if anyone got one but I think that is a hard unit to hunt judging by the harvest reports.
-
Two friends of mine drew that tag and neither got their elk. Of course neither put much effort into it, so hard to say.
-
A late cow tag?
-
The Wynoochee unit gets poached pretty hard from what I've heard. There are animals there, but it's a below average unit in my opinion. I don't understand why they issued so many cow/doe tags this year.
-
It's actually been open for cows during late season archery the last few years, but it changed this year. It can be a pretty decent hunt. I've never heard of it being poached anymore than any other unit, unless you're calling native hunting poaching.
-
Paving up to the dam has not helped that area....
-
That hunt should never have been changed into a permit hunt. There were not enough elk killed to justify taking away the general late hunt...just another chance for the fish and game to make money off permit apps. Sorry you did not get an elk, hope you did not waste a lot of points on that hunt!

There is elk in the Nooch but, you have to either know a landowner or do some preseason scouting. Also have to be willing to walk.
Prior to this year anyone with an archery tag could harvest antlerless elk during the late season in the nooch. So effectively that huge number of tags you see is really a reduction. Consider hunter effort and success rate and you get a far lower harvest. If not then they can reduce the number of tags until they get antlerless harvest to an acceptable level.
As for poaching. This is one of the GMU's that Cody Sterns and friends were active in. The rumor is he is back in town.
-
It has a decent amount of elk in it. The biggest problem is more and more are going into farmers fields and no hunting is allowed. You have to scout it like anywhere else and you will have success.

MONTESANO, Washington —
A man who investigators called the most prolific wildlife spree killer in state history has been convicted on five counts of poaching and sentenced to five months in jail. However, Fish and Wildlife officers said they believe the man has killed more than a hundred animals and that the actual total could be much higher.
KIRO 7 talked to the man, Cody Stearns, as he was led out of court Friday.

He was arrested for poaching who knows how many bears, and yes, he is a local. I agree with the previous post, this was just a way to generate more revenue. Late season Cows have never been easy to get, but they are around if you put the effort into it.
-
Thanks never heard of him

I had the late cow tag too. Hunted up there a bunch. I found a bunch of elk but just couldn't get within my comfort range. It is tough. Like iceman said paving up to the dam didn't help. I didn't hear of anybody get cows.
-
I agree on the paving, that was a ridiculous waste of money in my opinion, and increased traffic up there significantly, which of course is what they wanted, just sucks for us.

Sorry you did not get an elk, hope you did not waste a lot of points on that hunt!

nope my first cow app. My dad and i have a friend and he gave us good advice. Only problem is he stopped hunting up there 15 years ago. We were up by the dam most of the time. Went into the fields once to check it out. Went there early season and they were logging right were we had planned on hunting. Saw no new sign, we figured that the rifle season pushed 'em out. After 7 days of hard hunting we finally gave in and went with our friends to the Winston. Yeah i know :P. we got on Elk there but couldn't close the deal
-
Plenty of elk in the Wynoochee unit. You just have to ignore the fields and field elk and get in the brush.
-
I used to love wynoochee.
Remember all the usual crowd at turkey tracks?
How about the herds that would kick around south of Donkey creek to the river? Love it back in the day...
-
Yeah i like the unit a lot because theres not as many people. Then again anywhere has less people than the Winston. This year i'm gonna scout more and try harder
