Title: Bobcat attractants?
Post by: nategood21 on January 23, 2013, 03:36:11 PM: I need opinions on outside the cage attractants. What do you guys prefer to use? feathers pie pans wings? i don't have access to wings unless i shoot some sparrows which i think is illegal. i have pans around the ones i have out right now. How high up should they hang? Do they need to be right in front of the trap or just near it? Opinions?

Just try different ideas you've mentioned. That's half the fun of trapping to me. Be creative. ;)

Post by: wildweeds on January 23, 2013, 04:23:41 PM: umpteen years ago when it was legal to set iron,a buddy of mine wanted a bobcat bad,he enlisted the help of a 80+ year old fellow who had done a ton of trapping,the setup was find tracks near the creek and a running log,set a trap at each end of the log and use fresh trout for bait.It worked well for him because he set 4 traps and got 2 cats on the first and only go around.If I hadn't seen the cats in the round I never would have believed it.

Perhaps fish in your cage would do you some good.

Now I trap in pretty brushy country here on the west side so maybe I would feel differently if I lived on the east side.
I do believe in getting the trap on location and that takes some experience and maybe some luck. I also think cats noses are highly underrated. If they walk within 50' of your set they know it's there. If they are interested enough to check it out depends on the finicky nature of cats.
If you are convinced you need it there are a lot of things trappers use; pie pans; dvds; birdscare tape; wings, just a bundle of feathers; flashy fishing lures; pieces of hide. You'll just have to experiment as I think there is no concensus on what is the best.

Never had any luck with the eye attractant approach on cats, but an artificial mousehole under a stump was killer on coyotes.

Killing sparrows is not illegal; they are not native here and are not protected. They are easy to trap and airguns are not firearms if that is the problem.

Post by: carpsniperg2 on January 29, 2013, 12:18:21 AM: I have talked with a couple guys that are outstanding trappers. Both used feathers or wings as a visual attractant outside there sets.

Post by: TeacherMan on January 29, 2013, 01:34:26 AM: Beaver with castor in the cage and Gusto or Magnum Marten for an LD call. I use a grouse wind above the cage if I'm on an open ridge or in a spot it can be seen for some distance. Best advice dont overlook LD skunky lures ;)
