Title: Chicken photos?
Post by: weathergirl on January 26, 2013, 05:17:00 PM
Anyone who knows me, knows I love chickens.  We often hatch our own eggs, and come up with odd mixed-breed chickens.  Here are a couple photos.  Anyone else have photos of their chickens to share?

Those are nice pics.
I am contemplating getting into this on a very small scale, for the eggs. I have been following the threads on here about it.

Nice looking birds!
We just have garden variety Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Reds and Sex Links.  Nothing really worth taking pictures of.  I had a Silver Sebright Banty Rooster that was beautiful.  Unfortunately he decided that he enjoyed spurring my kids so he wound up with lead poisoning.

And here are our silkies.  Our son showed them in the San Juan County Fair last year (Blue ribbons for all!).  Fluffball and Crusty are pullets and gentle as can be, but Blackbeard is one protective cockeral!  He's the only chicken we've ever had that actually bit me (NOT pecked...bloody finger bite).  I've wanted to get rid of him, but he is so pretty...and really he is just doing his job.  Any other rooster that we've ever had that shows any sign of aggression ends up as dinner.

Here is my Pheonix Rooster. Just got him last fall. He's a young bird and can't wait to see his feathers when the mature. Down to just a couple after the last time the bears broke in to the coop and killed all but three.

I've got pics somewhere but don't know exactly what folder I put them in. My best layers the past few years have been the golden sex link. They are also fence jumpers (which my neighbors don't like) and I am going to experiment with Black Jersey Giants to see if they will produce good and stay in the fences.
The most beautiful rooster I've ever had was killed by a raccoon a few years ago. I don't care for coons that much. It's always a challenge with them and I think the Seattleites dump them out here.

With a pair of scissors cut the end primary feathers off the wings, start out with three and take more off if they are still able to get up there.  It should not effect them getting up onto a roost.  Cut the feathers even with the next layer of feathers.

Only one of our girls has ever figured out that she could fly over the garden fence.  I put a stop to it with a few feathers being cut off.   ;)

Bears are about the only thing we haven't lost chickens to...

Not a show bird ,but the lady I got him from in Deer Park has quite a few Pheonix in several colors that are show quality.

I have lost birds to racoons, coyotes, sharp shinned hawks, red-tail hawks, great-horned owls, and bear. Always have loaded guns close by.

Those Jungle Cocks are beautiful.  Here are a hen and rooster Pheonix from Shadow Seven Ranch where I got my rooster. Even the hens have long tails feathers.

To the non-chicken owner, this probably looks like a pile of chicken death.  To the chicken rancher, this is pure heaven.  A dust-bathing chicken is a chicken experiencing pure bliss!
