Post by: tbotts on January 26, 2013, 10:00:06 PM: My dad showed me how to do that when i was a kid. Shot a few at paper targets, never used them for anything serious like hunting. We had factory manufactured slugs for that.

Post by: bugs n bones on January 27, 2013, 12:13:58 PM: A cut slug as my uncle and father showed me how to make is 99 percent if the time way more accurate than any factory bought slug. With a modified choke at 100yards...look out! It kill s deer just as dead as any ultra mag. It will shoot through an empty 55 gallon metal drum all day long at 75 yards. They were taught this back in the day when ammo was hard to come buy, so they did it to put food on the table.

We always thought it was made that way, since the gun was made back when they were trying various ways of making a shot charge pattern better. Just before he died, Grandpa admitted how the gun came to be that way to my uncle and me. He said, with a twinkle in his eye: "I never told anyone about it, but during the war, (WW II) you couldn't buy lead shot, so I loaded a shotgun shell with Ball Bearings. One day I was hunting, and saw a Fox. I shot at the Fox with the Ball Bearings. The gun knocked me on my a$$--but I got the Fox!" :chuckle:

oh yeah ive known about cut shells for a while now, them things are devastating once hit a starling with one out of my .410 yeah i only found the beak. shot a 12ga cutshell into a toilet someone dumped at one of our shooting spots wasnt much left to even identify it as once a toilet.

word of warning if you shoot a cut shell look down your barrel afterwards if not cut perfectly the crimp can open up leaving the cut hull in the barrel, i watched a buddy bannana peel open a barrel on an 11-87 after he shot a poorly cut cutshell. crimp opened up left the hull in the barrel he shot another shell, his gun literally looked like elmer fudd's after bugs stuck his finger in the muzzle

Used to see a lot of deer where I used to duck hunt and we used to have some long modern season for any deer in the Battle Ground unit. It wasn't legal to carry lead when duck hunting. There have been a few deer taken with cut shells over the years.

Actually, the rules refer to possessing shot, not slugs, so you'd be OK with rifled slugs with you.
