Title: Updated 18 kapowsin permits left! 2-16-13
Post by: trophyhunt on February 03, 2013, 11:30:07 AM
Can't believe I panicked when they went up for sale and I couldn't get on the site, I'm surprised they havn't sold out yet. I wonder if the low number of deer being seen last past couple years is starting to turn people away or the price? They need to sell out so we can see who gets drawn for the elk!!

Or maybe because the dry weather kept us out most of the season. In addition, the fire wood was so picked over. Unless you cheated which I saw several do, it's tough to pencil out the cost. Deer were far and few. New gate closures and economy. :twocents:

I personally think they should raise the amount of elk tags they give out, plenty enough bulls to allow 5 or 6 tags per weapon. I would think if they increased the tags for elk they would sell out pretty fast.

shhhhhh quit advertising it!  I'm still watching the count daily and still trying to decide whether I want one this year or not???  Crazy to think that I'm even considering not getting one!  Due to the reasons already stated, deer numbers are ridiculously low and the closure in August for bear almost every year is starting to get me down!  It's my sons first year hunting and the gates only 10 minutes away, that's the only reason why I'm even remotely still considering it.  Do all my deer hunting on the eastside but nice to have that late buck option up there.

That's the biggest catch for me, it being so close. Of course if I draw a special permit for deer this year then I would have just wasted 350.00, of course that's if I don't draw the elk permit.

the real reason why i think they havnt sold out is because kapowsin permits cant axcess the eatonville side this year plus all the other reasons stated above i bought white river permit this year because i didnt want to deal with the people in kapowsin speeding up behind you and flashing their lights telling you to move over  during modern deer season

Find a gated area and hunt it, you'll be much happier getting off those roads.

They will be flashing their lights at you at White River too along with riding your tail.....just not as many and many of them will be tribal as they always seem to be in a hurry to drive fast, cover ground and look for big white bodies in their 4 month elk hunt...................Good Luck.............Les

Land sales plus dropping Eatonville side reduce the appeal.
Fire closures, less animals, closing sections for spring bear permits, raising permit fees.

Looks like they've hit a price point vs. benefit level that makes a lot of us debate the $350

I use to buy one every year and my buck last season was cheaper even with the multi tag. I do miss being 10 min from the woods the boy and I would head in after i got off work just to kill some time.

I hope they dont sell out. Every year they change boundries, allow more permits, and raise prices. I understand making money and i have no issue paying to access land but i believe they are starting to get a little greedy. The last year i bought a permit was only to have a chance at the elk hunt. The odds of drawing that permit are terrible and $350 for the entry wasn't worth it. I hope someone on this site gets it so we can see some good horn porn, there is some absolut pigs in there!!!!!

Yes, it also enters you into a drawing for 1 of 6 permits they give out to hunt elk. If it wasn't for the elk drawing I wouldn't be buying this permit everyear. They give you a key so you come and go when you want, some rules when you can be in there. They will give you a map with rules and they have gated off walk in only areas, lots of land to find you own place away from people. But the deer number have seemed to go down the past few years.

I don't there's ever been a time when they didn't sell out? It will be curious to see if they do sell out, if they don't I wonder when they would do the elk drawing????

dont worry, if they sell out. they will just make more keys. you can only deplete a resource (in this case big bucks and bulls) so much . additional keys obviuosly mean more hunters and that has dropped the quality every year. :twocents:

hmmm... you guys aren't making this sound too good? I picked up my first permit when they went on sale this year. I  figure I'll check out the land and see if it's worth investing in yearly. The elk draw was a motivator, and being so close I almost was forced into it. There's something to said for being minutes away from the woods. Good luck guys!

There is alot of animals in there but its not a garantee animal. You will have to scout and hunt hard to fill your tag with a decent buck!

:yeah: I bought one last year and didn't think it was all that it's cracked up to be. IMO, it's to much money for what you get out of it. Closing the Eatonville gates and poor wood cutting areas make the $350 hard to swallow.

Hancock has called there land NOT open and unclaimed land which has kept the indians out in the past. If they ever start hunting in there, it's all over and they won't be the only ones hunting elk in there. The mucks will slaughter the elk in there when they eventually own the place, I really don't believe they will be able to hunt in there until they buy it. It will be a very dark day when they buy Hancock. :bash: :bash:

If you don't think it could happen. Remember what happened to the Green River unit (485). Just like 485 they go through the state. Take a stand ! Don't buy one. Until they make it desirable again.

Theres so much more to the Hancock people' than you know. Besides the indians trying to accuire the elk rights.Hancock draws several forester elk permits each year for all Hancock employees and there familys . Oh ya ! you know that area your not able to access during the spring bear hunt. Thats right! employee only area! Wake up people! Just stay away until they change.

It's a permit that gives you a key to access thousands of acres of private gated land to hunt deer, bear, predators and do what ever. They draw 6 permit holders for a chance to hunt elk on the property, big elk. It is located in the kapowsin area, you can take up to 5 cords of wood with your permit. They only sell 1200 permits, which I think is too much. The deer hunting used to be better but it's still ok, I would hope with the gates there is less poaching. The permit cost 350.00, expensive so it's a tough decision but it's close to home for me.

After they sell out, which will be soon, they will draw the permits before the state deadline for special permits. Last year it was sometime in mid April if I remember correctly. They will absolutly draw before the state deadline though.

So you pay $350 for private land access. Then you apply for a special permit in the game regs to get a chance at a trophy bull? If you don't get drawn, then you have general season rules (3 point or better for elk/Any Buck for Deer)???

Do you get an automatic entry into the drawing by paying the $350 or do you have to buy raffle tickets seperately?
So you can't hunt elk at all if you don't get drawn for their bull raffle? but you can hunt Any Buck deer?
Can you have a partner come with you; if you get drawn, as long as they are not hunting (pack bitch)?

Yes you are automatically entered into the drawing. If you get drawn you can have one helper come with you. You can't hunt elk unless you are one of the six drawn. Except there is a special permit cow hunt in January that you can hunt cows (WDFW Permit) Yes you can hunt deer in there.

Do you buy one every year? I just checked out their website. Seems like a great deal if you get drawn; if not, it seems a little steep in price for a deer.
Do they offer the bull raffle tag in White River or Eatonville?

Not all of the White river GMU is in Hancock's White river tree farm. Also, If White River tree farm sells out of permits I believe Hancock will sell you a special one for just your hunt for like $100.

And they shut it down for fire danger when you are cutting in a foot of snow. Picked over and the won't let you winch wood out. I am done after 13 years of giving the Indian friendly tree prostitutes another dime!

They are down to 3 permits!! Elk drawing will be soon. As far as them being friendly to the indians, I'm not sure what your referring to? I'm no big fan of what they charge but I do like the fact that in the kapowsin tree farm they keep the indians out from poaching by saying it's NOT unclaimed land. It's probably the only property that large that they are not allowed to enter and hunt at free will, I'm not sure about the Buckley gate and the land in that area but in the kapowsin gate, I've never seen an indian once on that property.  They will own it someday, but for now, them not being in there is the reason it's one of the best elk draws in the state. Once they buy it, it will all go away.

Just checked and it says sold out. 6 guys (or gals) should be getting a phone call that will make your elk season a lot more interesting in the very near future! Good luck to everyone in the drawing.

Look harder. They even run tribal hounds in there. In addition, a reliable source told me they have already purchased some property around the lake.
Your right about the elk draw. That is the only thing I regret about not buying in. Good luck!

I emailed them today to see what the deal was with the number of permits and this is what there response was.

"We haven't sold out there were 11 left earlier today, it was a problem with the counter.  We are not selling more then 1200 permits, every is how its always been. Hopefully I will be able to do it next Friday, we will post it as soon as the winners have been notified."

Well hopefully that is true!

They sold every thing below the 100 line to the indians. That makes up the whole back side of Kapowison lake. I heard a rumor the indians plan to put a casino back there but don't take that to the bank as I have not heard anything further.

I can't imagine these are refundable, so the possibility of permits being initially bought but then being reoffered is out of the question. I'm guessing they are willing to sell as many as people are willing to purchase, but internally have a set cutoff date for their permit draw. Maybe 3/31? Probably want to make it look like there are only a few left and people need to buy them ASAP. Don't know, but that's what it sure looks like.  I don't know of any way for anyone but Hancock to truly know how many permits have been sold, so why not sell as many as possible under the guise of 1200 or whatever they advertise.  Not like any of the purchasers can tell from how many people they see up there how many permits were sold.  :dunno:

It says they will email notify the draw winners by April 1, and it's the 5th, so I guess I am SOL.

Maybe they are holding off on the elk draw until they sell all the permits for Kapowsin. I got an Eatonville permit, they only draw 1 hunter, sure wish they would do the damn draw so I can quit thinking about it.
