Title: Lets talk AR sighting options??
Post by: jrebel on February 06, 2013, 07:49:10 PM: I am looking at a few different options for my AR....I don't want a scope (traditional) because I want quick acquisition. I'm leaning toward a reflex / halographic sight. What do you guys that have then think? What are some good models people have used or currently use. What are the pros and cons, in your opinion....and do you recommend I look at other options?

Post by: sirmissalot on February 06, 2013, 08:17:00 PM: I'm going with a scope on top, and an offset 45 degree Leupold delta point for rapid acquisition. They have several types of mounts/ options for this, including some good open sight options.

Post by: JimmyHoffa on February 06, 2013, 08:18:47 PM: An ACOG would be great. might be tough to find right now. You can even use it with NV. Really solid sight...only bad part is it will have you wanting to move up to 7.62 to really give it a work out.

I put a Leupold CQB 1-3x scope on my first AR, A .223 Rock River Coyote Rifle. When set on 3x, at 100 yards, all I could do was superimpose the circle-dot reticle on the 5" round target. I still got 1/2" groups. The scope is now on my 450 Bushmaster. FWIW, those scopes were $600+ five years ago. They're close to $1000 now. Burris makes a similar model, the AR-322 Prism Sight, $349.00 in my Natchez Shooters Supplies flyer I got today.

Isn't the acog more of a scope type???? How easy is it to keep an open field of view and acquire a target with the scope? I do like acog scopes and have used them, but it has been years and I was shooting a buddies rifle.

What about the vortex razor???? Is it worth the 500 ish they are asking?

Natchez also has the Eotech 512 (the one that uses the AA batteries :tup: ) for $425.00. Don't know about the availability. You'll have to check their website to see. www.natchezss.com (http://www.natchezss.com)

I've ordered quite a few scopes from them. Good company--no problems.

Post by: aaronoto on February 06, 2013, 09:09:15 PM: I really like my Vortex Strikefire. I'd get an Aimpoint or EOtech if I had the money, but I'm not going to battle with my AR so the Strikefire at under $200 fit the bill very nicely.

It can be left on constantly for 3 years (Eotechs need to be turned on each use), comes with a mount, 2MOA dot (personally dislike the Eotech's circle). I'm very happy with it for HD use, need magnification for coyote hunting.

Post by: Bean Counter on February 15, 2013, 06:12:31 PM: I've used EOTech's a lot and I love them. They are very durable. Beat the hell out of them, actually. at 100-50 yards and below, you should be able to hit your target with both eyes open using that optic.

For end of the world guns, zombie's, and blue helmets, I like the addition of a Crimson Trace MVF-515G. The green laser is very powerful and visible even in bright sunlight.

Is it just me or have rifle scope prices gotten way out of hand also. I mean 3+ grand for a scope. That's way more than I paid for the gun. Sorry back on track I was looking at a Vortex with target turrets for about 450 on Opticsplanet for my DPMS lite hunter .308. The lazer would be fun too.

Post by: hillbilli on February 18, 2013, 02:41:07 AM: I saw way more rifles in Iraq with aimpoints than anything else, some beat all to hell, and still working. Only eotechs were the air force... if i get a reflex/dot type optic it will be an aimpoint, and probably a 2moa dot.. I would have a set of backup iron sights on any AR, as to optics it depends what you want to do.. if it's a 100yds and less defensive gun, the aimpoint is hard to beat (but it's also 400$).. for a general purpose, want to be able to shoot 300yds, consider QR rings and a compact handy 2-7 optic like the weaver, burris fullfield2, or redfield.. try one for quick work at 10yds, see if you arent almost as good as a red dot-and a whole lot more useful at distance. (a 1.5-4.5 variable is an option too) the weaver and burris seem to take a beating pretty well, and the redfield should, it's leopould built- and these are 150$ price range optics..

Post by: hillbilli on February 18, 2013, 05:42:51 AM: maybe so, but every marine I saw in 05 had ACOG's.. which are great optics, but they are also 1200$.. the eotech does have finer aiming point available, wider field of view, the ability(option) to use AA batt's, they have battery life in 100's of hrs, not 100,000's, but also can be set up to auto shut off after several hrs, they arent all bad, dont get me wrong..
