Got the 7MM Rem Mag last summer...easily sub moa@ 100yards. Hornady Superformance 154gr SST chronoed @ 3155fps. Topped it with a Bushnell Elite 6500 2 1/2 - 16 X 50 and Kenton Industries Speed Dial custom turrets. Longest shot taken so far was 385 yards....ding dong!!! Took buck this november DRT @ 230 yards. I am so impressed with this gun that I hope to add a short action and add a couple calibers/barrels. No brainer as far as Im concerned.

I would expect easy sub MOA groups with factory ammo and much better if you handload. I've never had a Savage barrel which wouldn't shoot under an inch. .75" is pretty typical, and .5" is not uncommon.
You'd be very happy with that rifle.

There was a thread on here a while back about one a guy had in 6.5x284. Seemed to shoot lights out.
-
any one shoot them out past 700 yards or out to a 1000 ?
-
what other rifle would you guys recommend forlong range shooting want to b able to hit steel at 1000 yards
-
I got the savage model 112 in the 6.5x 284 with the 6.5x20x50 vortex viper, the farthest I have attempted to shoot with it is 800 yards and it hit a 12x12 target 4 out or 5 shots. I love the gun and the scope. I know it would hit steel at a 1000. Go to you tube and type in 6.5x284 and you can see it hit steel at a mile.

I look at the 6.5 x284 but I kind of want to stay with the 7mm easy to find ammo if I Dnot reload

My hunting partner just bought one and right away sent it to Gunwerks and had them top it with there Nightforce scope. They did all of their work and got a custom bullet to match and only shot it twice and on the third time every pulling the trigger, killed a muley at 500 yards. So i guess he loves the thing :chuckle:

I'm not sure if you'd find anything in that price range better for what you want to do. There are other guns and calibers that may do it with more flash and bang, but they likely won't work much better.
Buy the Long Range Hunter, a good scope, some ammo, and get to shooting!

The savage model 12 LRP is super accurate. it is a little heavy but the 260 Rem and 6.5 CM will get you on steel at 1000

If you are sub MOA at 100 yards and do your bit you will be on a 12x12 steel at a 1000 yards. 6.5x284 would be hard to beat overall though. There are a lot of 7mm mag options though. I am not a Savage fan, although they shoot better than anything else out there at their price point. Kind of like the AMC Gremlin or Eagle, worked better than most for their purpose but still ugly.

Kinda funny having someone put $1500 dollars of scope on a $700- gun and then letting someone else do the load work up on it and then only shooting it twice before shooting an animal. Half the fun of a new gun is shooting it and working it out for yourself.
If choice of gun was entirely based on accuracy for .price then Savage would be the biggest gun company around. Kind of funny how personal preference steers a person one way or another regardless of performance.

You are correct Nimrod. Most recently I owned a Savage , but am missing the feel of Chintwister. I mean Winchester. I have had 2 Savages and 2 Winchesters. All 4 were accurate enough. The Savages maybe a shade more accurate, and much less expensive.
