Title: Finding winter kills?
Post by: Kamo2112 on February 10, 2013, 06:45:03 PM: So my buddy and I were talking and brought up the topic of finding winter kills. And we were wondering if anybody knows whether or not its legal or illegal to take like deer or elk antlers with the whole skull still left on it?

Post by: lokidog on February 10, 2013, 07:01:20 PM: It is legal, IF you have a State Salvage Collecting Permit. You have to have some educational connection like being a teacher.

If anyone finds an incredible dead animal, that is not an endangered species, please contact me as my wife does have both WA and Federal Collecting Permits.

Post by: trophyhunt on February 10, 2013, 07:09:49 PM: I don't know too many guys that will leave a nice elk or deer head in the woods, most of us know it's illegal but I'm not about to poach a deer or elk but I will never leave a nice rack in the woods to rot. When you get it home it's all good, no law saying you cant put your legally killed head in your front yard or on your wood shed. The tag is for the meat. I know why the rule is there but it's for the a holes that would kill an animal just for the head and leave the meat to rot. I'm not guilty of that so I won't be leaving any racks in the woods! He did miss some info on his survey though.

Its to prevent from poachers killing them out of season, going back later and claiming that they found winter kill.

I don't think that particular law is going to stop the low life's from killing animals and pulling heads out of the woods out of season. I understand why the law is in place, but if I find a 360 class elk head antler hunting... liked I said, it's going home with me. Just being honest.

He should have just told them that the heads were his kills from past hunts. The tag is with the meat and then you can throw it away when the meat is gone, there is no law saying you can't leave your heads outside after you harvest them. I can't imagine ever finding a 360+ Roosevelt (or any) bull dead in the woods and leaving that beautiful head to the squirrels or some other hunter to take home. :twocents:

I found a big moose wolf kill about 10 yrs ago in idaho, called game dept a warden ended up calling asking some questions asked if i would take pix of site and horns and go ahead and bring it to an office and gave me a form so i could keep it!

Do have to remember most winter kills happen late winter, early spring and they have already lost their horns!

It didn't have anything resembling a third point, shook my head in disappointment and continued on. Was back in the same area during elk season and saw that the antlers had been cut off with a hand saw.....probably not a coincidence.

Post by: GoPlayOutside on February 11, 2013, 11:41:15 PM: In Montana and Wyoming you have to notify the Gamey or DNR/Biologist rep. They can approve/disprove the animal died of natural causes, and allow you to take the head.

Here's the link for state wildlife. http://wdfw.wa.gov/licensing/scp/ (http://wdfw.wa.gov/licensing/scp/) This one costs a bunch, $117. This one will ask what you plan to collect, we don't collect live wildlife so just put something like incidental salvage.

If she wants to be able to collect migratory birds including hawks and owls, nests, or feathers she needs a Federal Permit which is actually easier to get. This one is free for teachers or schools. A google search should find it.
