Title: Where to Find Old Shotgun Parts
Post by: swinters on February 11, 2013, 09:59:38 PM
I have an old Laclede Damascus steel 16 gauge that isn't worth much but has been in the family since about 1919 and I need a couple of parts for it.  Biggest thing is the right external hammer since I can fabricate or repair the rest if I have to.  The shotgun was actually made by Crescent Arms Company, who stamped anyones name on it if you bought a dozen or so and other than the name they're pretty much the same.  I've checked Numrich, who has a Crescent listing and breakdown but lists everything except firing pins and a couple of screws as sold out.  Also looked online at Bob's, Dixie and so on and no luck.  Does anyone have any ideas on where I might find any parts for something like this (or even likely places for a parts gun)?

The guns are not expensive. ($200ish) Buy one for parts. (Like old trucks.)

I'd love to buy one for parts, even if it's damaged or whatever.  I've checked the couple of sites that I know about and have found a couple of ended auctions but they were pretty old.  Are there any shops or sites that tend to carry this type of stuff?  Doesn't matter to me where a shop is since I'm retired and can pretty much head out whenever and wherever.  The sales I've seen ranged from $30 (damaged barrel - probably tried to shoot it with modern powder) to $500 ("Stagecoach Gun" with documented history) so they're certainly cheapos.  Problem is that Crescent Arms manufactured them for something like 250 companies that sold them under their name so to do an internet search I'll have to search under each individual name.  T

Man, if Numrich or Dixie hasn't got parts for an old hammer gun, Wenatcheejay's advice to look for a parts gun is the best.  Trouble is, the parts you need are usually the ones that wear and break most often....

I was afraid of that but was hoping there might be some ideas out there.  I haven't done gun work other than regular maintenance and some parts replacements for about 20 years and most of my contacts are gone.  I guess I'll just finish cleaning it up and braze and paint the broken hammer for now, hang it on the wall, and watch for a parts gun.  Thanks though.
