My Dad just purchased an Oregon 450 at the Sportsman show in Portland On sunday. Good little GPS other than the fact that it shows absolutely no roads at all! All it has are freeways and lakes along with the names of cities. He is not a super good technology person so I told him I would ask you guys to see if anyone has the same problem? I registered it online, but I couldnt find anything about this problem. Anyone else have this problem? Is it just a faulty GPS? Im sure there is some trick to getting it to show up?

You have to download map programs into them. Otherwise you just get a basic "location" device!
-
The maps you need to buy separately.
Try this site: http://www.huntinggpsmaps.com/ (http://www.huntinggpsmaps.com/)

If you do buy a map get the huntwa map. Does it have a sd card slot? Also free maps at gpsfiledepot.com.

Bobcat, we bought that chip for Idaho. So you have to buy one for each and every state???
-
Yes. check out gpsfiledepot too. You need this.

I haven't had a GPS for a long time, bu I'm told that you can get programs for areas that show OWNERSHIP of the land.

Ya thats what is in my pic. Its great! A must have.

So....I have a Garmin 62s with the TOPO US Northwest map card in it. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=255&pID=27609
I have also downloaded areas of birds eye images that overlay on the card maps. I use this alot to run rivers in the boat.
If I take out the Garmin TOPO card and replace it with the HUNT Washington for Garmin card, will I gain a ton more features but still have the ability of everything I used to have? Anyone have experience going from one card to the other?
I am technology dumb.

That's what the garmin 450 is, a generic GPS that you buy in order to download the maps you want. If you wanted the topo map pre loaded your dad should have purchased the 450t.

You will be fine. I have 655t and birdseye(great!) and huntwa sd card map. You can toggle between overlay etc. Also you may be able to go gpsfiledepot and download that topo map onto yours so you dont need sdcard. I did but it depends on memory and other stuff, basecamp software etc.
