Title: Carpsniperg2: European Fallow Buck
Post by: carpsniperg2 on February 22, 2013, 11:28:27 PM
Well I was able to dust off the archery equipment and harvest this beautiful fallow buck. For you guys that have never had fallow meat, it's some of the best venison I have ever had. I love the meat and they are such cool animals. This was a ranch hunt but still fun and put some great meat in the freezer.

Shot was 36 yards. I twitched a little on the shot as I was 2ND guessing myself on my pins. Since my break is right at 35 yards. So I did not have a normal clear mind I like to have on a shot. He was quartered away a little and my arrow hit back about 4" and the arrow went threw the middle of his liver and back of the off side lung. To my suprise he went about 30 yards and went down. Probably less then 30 seconds. The only problem was he was a big hill that was on the edge of one of the ponds in the property. So with a few good kicks he made it dead square into the middle of the pond. I got to practise my lasso throwing skills to catch his horn. Took a few tries but got him hooked and taken care of.

Looking forward to some great table fair and charlie is going to do a mount on him for me. I have been wanting a fallow for my trade show booth. So I am sure it will turn out great.

Hope you guys enjoy the pic's!!!

Gear:
Bear Anarchy 73lbs
Goldtip 5575
100g Rocket ultimate steel broadheads
Revolution rest
Micro Alpha 5 pin sight

That is awsome.  Where did you do that hunt and if you don't mind, how much does a hunt like that cost?

I met a guy at the sportsmans show and he said he had a ranch and was raising them. I guess oregon is making it hard for the exotic guys to own them so he is selling them out to another breeder from my understanding. So I think this was just a one time deal. If he keeps them I told him I would be happy to send some clients to him.

Thanks guys.

Maligator I also love the different patterns on the fallow deer. There is 3 main colors on them the white/fawn like mine. White and then the dark black and brown. I have always wanted one of the black colored bucks. There was one in the heard but it's a younger buck but it looks like he will be a great buck someday. There is 4 that should be shooters next year. If for some great reason he is able to keep them.

He has some great genetics and this buck I shot is a younger buck at 4. Most of the time they really start turning there growth on at 5-6 and get to be mature. His hunters already came in back in august and shot the 3 he had to hunt this year. I wanted some meat and he let me come harvest this buck out of the heard. He showed me a skull that just made my mouth drop. His big breeder buck that was 7. He had a freak deal happen and a wind storm blew a branch down out of the tree and it landed on the deer laying under the tree and broke it's back. That buck was amazing with huge wide thick paddles. Would have been great for him to get some more use out of his genetics.

I 've taken fallow deer in NZ and AU they are very good eating, some of the best venison I've ever had. That was way cheaper getting one close to home.

Nice looking one.  Their are a few exotic ranches in Oregon.  I have a few buddies that have hunted them a few times.
