Title: Field dressing / processing web sites / U tube videos
Post by: JJD on February 26, 2013, 07:58:12 AM
Some of the hunter Ed students have asked if I knew of any good Field dressing / processing web sites or U tube videos about it.

I normally just tell them to do a web search of  it.

Just wondered if ya'll knew of any that are pretty good.

As a self taught hunter, I relied on youtube as well as other sites to see the actual process of field dressing.  I used the Elk101.com's field dressing technique as you avoid messing with the gut bag and the like while still getting the filet and all the goodies from inside of the body cavity.  The one thing that the gutless method doesn't touch, IMHO, is if you're lucky enough to bag a "trophy", then caping it without splitting down the neckline would be quite difficult.  I've never caped an animal, so who knows if I have a valid point or not. Definitely try a quick search on youtube for "field dressing", and you'll get a ton of video's, some good and some bad.  I also believe the Colorado fish and game has a field dressing video out there as well.  The problem is that most field dressing videos are with females, and field dressing a male, especially around the genitals are a little different.  Hope this helps.

Nothing beats hands on. It would be great if there was a way to preserve a road kill deer for in class demonstration. I'm sure the logistics of gettting, storing, thawing, and dressing would not be practical but sure would be cool.

I watched a lot of videos but nothing beats experience. It took a couple try's to finally get it down. It is a lot easier and faster than you think. Usually I can get the meat in the cooler within 30 min, which is faster than dressing and skinning. Don't be afraid to just get in there and do it. The only thing to keep in mind is stay close to the bone and away from the gut bag. A fillet knife works great for this kind of work. The videos can be a little confusing. You really need to know where the muscle groups and joints are. Try deboning an already dressed down deer to get a feel for it. Good luck

I would focus on taking your time, and do your best to keep the meat clean.  Clean of hair and dirty.  Will save you a lot of time and meat later when it is time to butcher your game.

This is the best one i ever seen.  How to Bone Out a Deer-Step by Step (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMx0JMOv5WI#ws)   I used it this year on my sons deer and works really good...
