H20, Just go hit the Garage Sales this spring to the east of where we live. I see multiple each year moving across or off the side of the road. They aren't hard to find. That way you can find some deals and still bag your yogi...
And that way you wont have to spend money on bullets, just tag one on the way to the sale. You might be able to trade garage sale proprietors an uncured bear rug (fresh) for a used lawnmower or something. You wont need a gun, you'll break like 50 laws, and you'll get a sweet new (to you) lawnmower.
All the while I'll be in the bed of your pickup drinking beer in a used chaise lounge (usually a garage sale freebie).

I'm pretty exited myself. Hopefully H20hunter can put one down. Preferably while its in good day light hours so i don't have to track bear in the dark like last year.

That map still looks pretty accurate from the scouting I have done in the last year even though its from 2009. Ran into a ton of sign 8 miles back but not accessable by vehicles. I haven't decided if I'm going to that area yet. Maybe try the roads first then after a few weeks take a few days and camp back in that area. Be a fun hunt forsure.

Just opened my "packet", two type written pages. Anyone notice the cost of postage for this? 92 cents! I could have mailed this same thing for 46 cents and saved money on a smaller envelope. I will be setting up a caller on the far side from me and using a fawn distress. If a bear comes in the plan is to stick 'em. If a yote comes in the plan is to blast him with the 12. Any suggestions on calling duration for the fawn distress?1 1/2 hours. Good luck. I think you might see more bears by glassing from high points and coveringmore ground. So...no sign at all up higher....old sigh down lower. Seems that they are not very active yet. I've heard rumors from a few guys that sighting have been had of course but they are few and far between. Going to head back out to explore this evening.
Here is a pic of a little doe. We came around a corner and she was just off the road. She looked more startled than we were and didn't seem to know what to do.

And, good, since I did. First one I ever called in. Took this little in heat breeder out at 22 yards, didn't save the pelt after the ballistic tip did its job. :yike: It was all covered with dred locks anyways. I did save the head and tail though.

Nothing spotted this morning, just some dead trees from old peels. Sky, I see what you are saying, I was hinking it meant you were in there bear hunting not just for another activity. For example, if I saw some mushrooms while in there bear hunting, I would pick them, but I would not be in there just cruising looking for mushrooms. I have yet to hear of any harvest, but I know the bears are getting more and more active with each day of good weather. I hope all is well so far for your hunts. I do need to touch on a couple things regarding the access you have been granted.
I have received a few reports of activities and events that need to be clarified. First, this is viewed by all those involved as a damage hunt. Private timber companies, DNR, and WDFW came up with a standard that must be met and all of you were told in the meetings why. Getting vehicular access to all this land is a privilege and you have all agreed to hunt under the criteria presented to you in the meetings. You were granted access to hunt black bears, and black bears only. This does not include coyotes or targets. Please do not use your keys anywhere but within the unit you were drawn, and leave the gates in the position you encounter them.
Second, I would like to reiterate that if you see things that are out of the ordinary or questionable, we have provided you with a list of contact numbers to report these. You have my email and telephone number if you cannot reach enforcement. We covered this in the meeting as well. Please provide as much information as possible, so I can properly inform our enforcement, and they can respond by the most efficient means possible. This includes encounters with people/vehicles behind the gates that appear out of place, intoxicated individuals shooting weapons, garbage dumps that block gate access, and illegal timber harvest. Too much information, is better than not enough information.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Good communication and rule compliance will go a long way towards successful hunt programs in areas like those you were granted access. If I do not hear from you until then, enjoy the rest of your hunt,

There was a big ol' white van with gov plates. They had a little sandwich board sign that said training in progress. Basically looked like one guy in a ghillie suit, one guy spotting, and another guy with a stick. Didn't see any long guns but the ghillie guy had either a big soft case of a shooting mat. They didn't look real happy to see us driving by....

There was no new activity on the other set of peels I told you about. After a bit of walking, found another set of 3-4 trees peels (again only 50 yards off the road), so I moved my camera to there.
For both big groups of peels I've found, I've had luck walking the roads... looking for a glimpse of one tree from the road, then working back in to find the rest.

This is the area I moved my cam to... it's a "bit" more open than the previous spot (the other was growing over with salmonberries), but you can get a sense of how much slash there is from when it was thinned. Like I said in my post on the other thread... this stuff is 2-3 feet deep and a pain to walk through.

Heading out this evening and plan on hunting all weekend. Got a baby on the way any day via the sister in law so that could get in the way. Sheesh...not like my wife (her sister) HAS to be there. Thats what doctors and such are there for. With the nice weather and high temps this weekend I think the bears will be out in force.

So....the first thing I THINK I know is that since these cubs are soon to be kicked to the curb they should be weaned and momma would be considered a dry sow. I do not want to orphan any cubs. However...if they are that big they should be weaned and okay on their own.
I'd like some opinions on that. Not opinions on would you shoot a sow....opinions on the age and level of survival ability of the little ones.
Next...has anyone ever heard an upset bear make blowing wheezing sound...almost like a deer but much more nasal and loud? When you are solo it sure sounds like a bear even it if is not.
Talked with Turner after the hunt and it sounds like he is doing well. Both he and his son have tags and have the area dialed in. I'm waiting to hear back from a text I got about 45 minutes ago....he and his son think they have one called in at 80 yards below them.
So.....give me some opinions on year and a half old bears. Weaned? Survival chances? Like I said....I DO NOT WANT TO ORPHAN HELPLESS CUBS. I just figure others can benefit from me asking as well as myself. I see 'em again on Tuesday I may whack me a little one. That why we get two tags.
Nothing new this morning but who doesn't love some fresh poo! This stuff was very fresh with plenty of stank left in it.

The next day I went back in alone. After swinging wide through the woods for 4 hrs I swung above the location he told me about - about 6:00pm. Sure enough, from about 200 yds out I heard the same bawling. I got within 100yds and it in fact sounded like Chewbacha but now following that bawling there was another bear huffing. This went on for 10 minutes. I setup hoping they would come into the clearcut as they sounded as though they were right inside the treeline. I circled around but the wind kept changing. Finally backed out. It is a creepy sound. I Googled the Chewbacha sound used in the movies - turns out they used black bear bawls and lion sounds. We hunted that area again yesterday - pressing through the area but didn't find them.

H20 I'm not a bear biologist, but have seen bears that size on there own, and have shot one that size myself. I think they would be fine. They will be kicked to the curb in a month anyhow.
I was using a calf elk call that I found in my truck. I don't know if I actually called him in, but I do know it didn't scare him into the next county. :chuckle:

Ripper....I was hunting about a mile away from Turner on some Campbell property. Saturday early am we walked those couple of paths. We went quite a ways into the alders and didn't see any new sign. Same the other path. No new scat or sign that wasn't there the daty or so before.
I'm going to try about get out for some evening hunts, however, with a new niece due any day my wife is only a phone call away from having to be there for her sister. I was going to ask if she minded if I take both kids with me but decided against it. Have one angry woman (sister in law to be in labor soon) plenty.

You need to shot one of those bears no matter what the size. WDFW gave you a damage tag so you shouldn't be selective shoot any bear you can to prevent further tree damage. Hopefully you really help out and shoot a female too.
D-Rock has a valid point here. You should get a gold star for shooting a sow with cubs as it will ensure there are 2-4x fewer bears in the area to do damage as a result of your efforts. Also, you're probably saving children in Lynnwood from bears that will venture out on their playgrounds someday.
On a serious note I have most of this week and DEFINITELY this weekend free. Let me know if you want some support, moral or otherwise. I know of a Campbell gate that would be excellent if your key is working there.

So....I get my gate unlocked and am driving in and notice the grass off to the left is trampled. Considering it is so close to the road I'm thinking somebody chucked a TV back there or something. Irritated thinking I'm gonna be hauling more garbage than dead bear I take a look. Well, there is a little fresh mound of dirt, a little wooden cross, and some wilting flowers. Now, I'm cool with putting your pet in the ground with some respect but off the side of the road on private property? Sadly, no. Smokey the cat is in need of a vet visit that can't wait. He may not be coming home. Gonna be a sad evening for me if that is the case. He is a good one. Has always been good with the kids, let them both climb all over him and pull on his tail, face, ears, whatever...never one hiss. I will be out Wednesday.
Keep in mind I can give 9 new cats in a few weeks just let me know! They are those barn certified type of cats. :tup:

Thats a big NOPE....We (I) am done with the house pet for a bit. No space for a dog....not ready for another cat. A nice snake sounds good. Not a lot of attachment to reptiles. The boy wants a ball python...has for about two years...maybe next year.
Ball pythons are kind of cool. My daughter wanted one when she was younger, until she realized what they had to be fed. :chuckle:

I hear you with the drizzle and picking up sounds. For me, it's a wash rain vs. sun for hearing. With the sun, I always pick up a fly or two buzzing around my head. I'm not sure what's worse, fly buzzing or drip, drip, dip.

I plan on hunting a place called "bear rock".........name given by Turner and his boy. A small perch similiar to what we called the rock. Really it is going to be weather pending. I've got a small pop up portable that I can sit in and try and stay out of the elements. I'll only have a short hunt again because of work schedule.

OK, I have to admit. H20 is a very likeable guy. He seems to be OK with my dogs. Which says a lot about a guy. He's big enough to be a good elk quarter packer if needed. I didn't ask him for help with my last elk, but I'm sure he'd a been there if I would have asked. He always seems to have a positive attitude. Though I've never been with him on a hunting or fishing trip, I'm sure the company is good. The only thing I'll reserve judgement on is that some of his hunting approaches seem a bit off.
I'll drink a cold one with him any time despite his loyalty to team Jacob (I had to google who Jacob is when that was first said).

Well....the weather was poor and it was great for my evening hunt. I started the hunt on a road that leads up to the perch that Turner calls bear rock. It was raining pretty heavy on and off on the way out but things settled down nicely. This is the same road that Stang and I walked. With all the recent rain it was hard to tell which scat was old and which was new. There were some fairly large piles that had been there for a while and some fresher stuff that may have been driven on in the last two days. I didn't see any gut piles so not sure if it was hunters or not. There was the same old patch of bear fur in one section and a few more indications of crossings. By this time in the hunt it was not raining a drop, no wind, no bugs, and almost earily calm. I was walking as gently and slowly as I could but the squish seemed to be very loud. I would take a step, listen, step listen. Nothing. I figure if there was a bear in the area I would have heard him from a ways off. It took about an hour to go maybe 3/4 of a mile just slow hunting along. Every now and then I'd hear a tweety bird flutter but that was about it. I did venture down another old grassy road with some nice low growth reprod. Lots of little trails throughout this stuff and I know of one bear that was killed in "the bowl" at the end of the road. There was a little more ground cover to walk along and it was once again silent. Nothing moving. It was great. I could hear my own heart pick up every time anything moved. I wasn't seeing any sign in this area but to tell you the truth...I didn't care. I kept walking along, keeping my eyes moving, going slow, enjoying the hunt. At about 8:45 I turned back and worked my way back to the truck. Made it back a little after full dark and headed out. No bears but stayed pretty dry and had a nice hunt.

You wanna see me fragile get me back to the midwest where my roots are. I swear....being out here since 99 has got me whipped. I visit Illinois in the summer and the heat/humidity combo just kills me. I'll never move back if I can help it. This is my home. I don't need the cold winters or the sauna summers. Now...a little comfort is nice when in the woods regardless. Kind of like taking nice TP from home and not using the rough stuff. It's the little things. I've got plenty of time in the elements but once can always be smart about it. The dryer I stay they dryer my boots are the next time.
Having moved here from Illinois a few years ago myself, I still miss the weather. Well, more like the storms, and the sun. I don't mind the rain too much. Only when it starts to pool in my yard does it start to get on my nerves. If only chasing big game here was like finding white tails in Illinois....

Yep....last years bear was shot with the Hornady Interlock....it did a hell of a job. However, as you know, they are designed to come apart. This year the brush is already thick and lush. With wet conditions and the green growing by the foot per week I want to put Mr. Bear down DRT. I'm looking for that high shoulder drop 'em where they stand broadside shot. The Barnes will give me max penetration.
I'm pretty sure the only bullet that MIGHT not work great to kill a bear around here under 300 yards where most all shots are taken from is a full metal jacket bullet. Its not like we're hunting rhinos here, if you hit it where you're supposed to, any bullet that expands should work just fine.

I use federal factory loads in whatever they have on the shelf at that point in time. At shots under 200 yards i pattern inside 3" regardless and the area I'm aiming for is bigger than that. Never had a problem.
Next up in the "my bullets are better than yours category": Exploding bear-buster (see: bunker buster) bullets for max penetration and expansion.

Before the bridge...on the left....that is where the cool buck was hanging out with the FJ on Monday. Some area that needs to be further explored after the bridge on the left.I was drawn back on what I thought was a deer, that turned out to be a bear at about 20yds. That was on the road your talking about. Follow it all the way back to the end. I uused to have a trail cut in that would put you on the rock face looking back over the cut, and bridge. Sure trail needs to be trimmed back up..........Good bear spot.

D-Rock and I are good. He came over...helped with a little knife work....we ran up to TNT on Camano and dropped off Mr. Bear at the butcher.
So...the story. Yesterday I was out hunting and didn't see much. Turner and I hunted up on Bear Rock...saw a little deer but no action. However, midday yesterday I was heading back to the truck. There is an old road that is really very pretty. Open forest on both sides, soft walking, very bear like. Thing is I haven't walked it. I decided to give it a go and after only about 600 yards of walking I come across a group of teenagers and an adult. They were out hunting for Squatch. Really, they were. They had a cam out and a small group of them are doing their senior project on whether or not they can prove or disprove the existence of the Bigfoot. We chatted a bit about bears, bear hunt'n, Squatch, and the general area. Nice group of kids and what I thought is a pretty cool senior project. So, headed into town for lunch. On the way back to hunting I cam across them heading out. They said they had a bear and deer on cam but no squatch. So fast forward to this morning...I slept in and finally rolled outta the rack around 6:30. Got to the gate and parked around 8. I wasn't sure where I was going to hunt and decided to walk the road again and see if I couldn't see Squatch or maybe even a bear. Began my walk and then after only about 30 minutes of creeping along I look left and see a bear. He was looking right at me. I kind of say "oh oh oh" to myself as I get the rifle on the stick. Safety off and he is beginning to turn. There is thick brush night behind him so as he turn I let the crosshairs float on him and touch it off just as he completes the turn. I can see him hunch up at the shot and take about four strides into the thick brush.

The bullet went at the last rib, blew the liver to tiny bits and pulp, punched both lungs, and destroyed the far shoulder. D-Rock and I ran up to TNT and got it dropped off. 103 lbs hanging weight....I'm thinking around 200 lbs on the paw, maybe just a touch more. Big ol round head, nice boar, nice spring bear.Nice hunting shirt... Killer :chuckle:

That's a good reason to have him there. Guys able to pack loads are valuable.
In my camp, half the guys are give more instruction than anything else. Then again, they are old and aren't so ambitious any more. There's been more than one time they've been frustrated when we didn't listen to them and just pack an animal out the next morning. I'm a believer in getting them out and hanging at camp. A few times that meant packing past midnight. By doing that though that also means we can hunt the next morning and not pack meat during good hunting hours.

Thanks. Just got back from dropping the hide off at a local taxi. He is doing the hide for Turners son on his bear. I'm glad folks have enjoyed the thread. It has been fun. Burned more than one or two tanks of gas and have a few scratches on the FJ that need to be addressed but it was a fun hunt. Tough hunt.....I've been told that it is a harder tag to fill than a fall general tag and now agree. The brush and vegetation is 10 times thicker in just the last two weeks. Having a gate key is a very nice perk. You can get back and explore areas that would take a while to hike to just to look around. George, one the Campbell guys was very nice every time we came across him. He was always cruising with his grandson and happy to share info about bear sightings and what he has been seeing. I'm getting this one hair on tanned and having the skull done as a wall mount euro with a simple brass plaque: Black Bear, Spring 2013.Who Is Doing The Hide?

Can we use bear heart for crab bait in a few months? I think you catch bigger crab that way.
Try the liver. It holds much more scent for the crab to come to. Used to use elk liver in my bait box when I had a salt water boat and actually crabbed.
H20, the heart is good stuff for the grind at the butcher.

Gonna be a little hard to test the theory....the liver was in various sized chunks and mostly turned to pulp.....The heart was chucked at my brother in laws head. He ducked and I believe it rolled over by some logs...probably already eaten by now.
You basically threw crabs over your bro-in-law... what a waste.
Liver goes quickly, heart has staying power for a longer soak.
Also, any crab *censored* enough to eat bear, is probably 3/4 alaskan king crab, 1/4 puny dungeness. It'd be a good outing.

Turner, I did the work. I macerated the skull and cleaned it. I peroxided it because that was going to be the end of it at the time for me. Then I saw some of this work done and changed my mind. This treatment could be applied right after the skulls been cleaned and dried. I used the bronzing products from http://www.sculptnouveau.com/. (http://www.sculptnouveau.com/.) There's also copper, iron, nickle. You can mix the metals to achieve different look and feel too. The cool part is they sell different stains/patinas/acids that will age the application. It's real metal flakes suspended in the paint that harden into a metal coating. I think I applied the stain too heavily on this first bear. I've seen much better bronzing work but in the end I like it and it's tough. It's perfect for placing a skull outside in the elements as it weathers like metal and with only the teeth exposed will last for years. An application of sealer keeps the metal from aging any more. Glad you liked it - I was certainly throwing the dice on a prized possession.I'm gonna give that a try this fall. Thanks

Good to hear they are working fast on your bear. Years go they had my goose mount forever. It kept getting pushed back by deer and bears, etc they said. Good people though, wish I could live on the air park with a hangar like theirs...I got my Buck back in May, and my sons spring Bear skull is done now. They are good guys.

So anyway he recovered the bullet from the far shoulder where it was lodged. I don't remember my exact load data and am to lazy to go find it. These bullets are for my .270, 150 gr Barnes X Bullet. This is not the tipped TSX. I don't remember the velocity. Ending weight once cleaned and dried is 146.7 gr measured on my digital scale. A few things....First off the shot placement if you remember was hard quartering away. Bullet entered at the last rib or so, blew out the liver, both lungs, and broke the far shoulder. It traveled a long way and was obviously a very devastating shot on the bear. He traveled a few strides and that was it. However, as you will see, the bullet did not expand very impressively. The shot was fairly close and I would expect more expansion a bit past the 100 yard mark and beyond.

I'm impressed it held together that well D-Rock! I've shot SST's for a while and they all absolutely exploded. All i've ever recovered was an empty copper jacket, and done that multiple times. I switched to the Interbonds last year and had excellent performace. HUGE expansion, but 85-90% weight retention. Disclaimer: I shoot a 7mag on a fairly hot load, so that might be part of it. The 7mm-08 loads I do have always exploded too though.
One thing I will say about SST's, never had an animal go more than a few feet from the shot, they are devestating.

Shot a 150lb or so bear with the 120gr Barnes TS from the same rifle, she ran all of 40yd with her lungs scrambled to mush. I'm sold on the Barned X bullets especially on elk.

Bwana......were you under the awning when Goldeneye had a small selection of recovered slugs from the one or two elk his buddies in camp shot? :chuckle: They had perfect expansion and great weight retention. They were some of the offerings from Barnes. I still agree that I needed a few more FPS....I've emailed and sent pics to Barnes and will see if they give any feedback.
Hey now, I am the only one in my camp that shoots those loads. I claim the destruction they caused. They were all separate animals. Can only remember one bull shot with my loads that needed a 2nd shot. As I mentioned the bullets I brought are no longer made by Barnes. They were the original X bullets and XBT's. I just keep shooting them because I have such high confidence in them. When I run out of my stock I'll have to build a new load and learn to trust it.
I'll be interested as well to hear the reply from Barnes H20. One think about these slugs. Even with little expansion, once they start tumbling they still do lots of damage.

I shoot a .270 Ruger M77 Stainless. The bullet mentioned was a Barnes 150g. I've used the 130 gr on deer and had excellent ranger performance as well as on game performance. As BullBlaster mentioned...the bullet did its job and then some. I've also used the 130 Hornady Interlock on last years fall bear....devastating performance on a high shoulder shot. I agree that most of the newer Barnes offerings are tipped....I also agree this is to help with expansion at a great velocity range.

Summer sausage and smoked cheese at lunch today! Over the weekend we cooked up two of the backstrap hunks. Tasty indeed. Since the muscle groups are smaller and there are more of them in this cut I think it will go into the crockpot next time for some pulled bear sandwiches....

I prefer this type. It was recovered at the site of the shot instead of at the butcher :tung:. This wasfrom my spring bear this year. So....picked up Mr. Bear at the butcher today and have already enjoyed some summer sausage, smoked cheese, and crackers. Delicious.....
So anyway he recovered the bullet from the far shoulder where it was lodged. I don't remember my exact load data and am to lazy to go find it. These bullets are for my .270, 150 gr Barnes X Bullet. This is not the tipped TSX. I don't remember the velocity. Ending weight once cleaned and dried is 146.7 gr measured on my digital scale. A few things....First off the shot placement if you remember was hard quartering away. Bullet entered at the last rib or so, blew out the liver, both lungs, and broke the far shoulder. It traveled a long way and was obviously a very devastating shot on the bear. He traveled a few strides and that was it. However, as you will see, the bullet did not expand very impressively. The shot was fairly close and I would expect more expansion a bit past the 100 yard mark and beyond.
Here it is.
Did you shoot your reloads over a chronograph? Based on the pic of that bullet, I'd say 150gr Barnes should be left for .270WSM and not for the standard .270 Win. It seems your MV must be very low for that bullet to not open up at a shot that close. :twocents: Hard to argue that the bullet failed when you recovered it out of a dead bear, but they really should open up a lot more, especially at 60 yards.

I can 2nd the Hornady superformance IB doing lots of damage, had a bear last yr that obliterated the shoulder on the exit. Bone fragments everywhere, and a hole about 6" across! Blacktail buck last fall in the brisket out the rear quarter, close shot so not a lot of expansion both dropped like a sack of potatoes...what type of bullet ?? SST or interlocks ...never had much damage with Interlocks ...SST ...Yes but if you tone down the load you can change that problem real quick ...Lot of guys want that speed ...I could careless about making bullets scream ...I load for accuracy not speed ...obviously speed does a lot more damage .. I have a few Interlocks I recovered out of bears ...I need to dig them up ..

Interbond, same ballistic as SST just a little different bullet, suposed to penetrate a little better. use 165 grain out of 30-06 close to 3000 f/ps at the barrel prints a 1" group out of the tikka

So...the butcher took it upon himself (after we discussed options and I gave him plenty of free reign to do so) made two corned bear roasts. This saturdy I took said roast out of the bag, rinsed it off, threw it in the crockpot with a sliced onion, a few cloves of garlic, two cups of water, a bottle of beer, and a pack of italian seasoning. I let that baby cook most of the day and turned it down to med about mid afternoon. Dinner time came along and I pulled it apart, chucked a few pieces of silverskin, served it up with some grilled bread and fresh sweet corn. Hold the phone it was killer! Good and salty, very tender, and very mild when it comes to the game flavor. Leftover corned bear went into some scrambled eggs with some spicy chedder, taters, and veggies for a fritta style omelet yesterday morning.
So, moral of the story....if the butcher asks if you want to try a little corned bear say yes! I've got one more.....I'll take pics of it next time I cook it.
