anyone done it yourself? I see you can buy kits to do it...
-
:yeah:
-
I ordered up some materials to try it, will report back next week.
-
I know a kid who does it himself, started a little side business doing it. His stuff looks pretty decent.

pics would be cool of his work.

kit should be here today, anyone volunteering parts? haha. Got to find something to dip!
-
dip a rubber handled hammer
-
haha, Ill probably find some tools, or some RC parts to practice on. Should be fun. Ill post pics later this week when I have the time to do some dippin :chuckle:
-
Been dipping. It has a learning curve. Consistency is the challenge now. But I'm getting there.

-
Im in for some more pictures...
-
Nice work  How much did the kit cost :dunno:
-
:yeah: Nice, looks good. Whats the kit cost and about how much will you be able to do with the kit you purchased?
-
thanks, I have a few mistakes, but I know why they are there.
I didnt buy a kit, I only got the activator and a couple different films. So Im into it for $30 or so right now. There is alot of tricks to it though!
-
do tell us all about your lessons learned, those look bad mule!
-
oooooooooo interesting. :chuckle: :chuckle: what is this?? a new hobby for me?? :chuckle:
-
Where did you get the supplies?
-
- Need a grid around the film in the water so it doesnt expand too much distorting the film (say 1" of space
- use an air sprayer to atomize the activator and make it an even coat, make sure it expands evenly
- dont forget to dip at an angle
- on the base coat, let it dry at least a few hours before dipping
- its not as easy as it looks, so get extra material to practice.
Thats all I can think of right now
-

I got mine from hydrographics, but I think my next order will be from diydipkit as everything comes in spray cans to make it easier. The activator I got comes in a can, so you need a gun to shoot it.

Try a Prevail sprayer from the hardware store, Home Depot has them. Pour the activator in the bottle & attach the spray bottle and you have a spray can. Should work for ya.

watched those already.
Im an autobody guy, so I have spray guns and all that stuff already, so it didnt cost me anything extra. Just trying to find more stuff to dip now, haha.

looks like fun!
-
what materials can be dipped? Plastics, metal, wood?
Also, what if you screw up a gun stock? Redo possible?

Anything, your supposed to scuff and prime the part, but Ive had it stick to unpainted stuff ok.
Parts I screwed up I used thinner and removed the dip and the primer, so its a start over.

Did my shotgun a couple months ago, very happy with the way it turned out.
This is basically what it looked like pre-dip.

No, did all the pieces individually, but dipped each entire piece at once. Barrel was easy, pieces that come to a point (like bottom side of stock) or are somewhat squared off (like the underside of the receiver) pose more of a challenge for some reason. It's not really evident in these pictures, but I double dipped the bottom 2 inches of the stock.

Here are a few customers trophy's that I dipped. For a guy to just dip a few things the starte up fees are the biggest. I started with about 200 dollars that included 3 prints a quart of activator, paint, tape, and a tube for dipping. Now Im into it about a thousand dollars and can dip anything tha is 36 inches by 48 inches. Once you get the hang of it is pretty simple.
-
nice cool looking stuff may have to try it out sometime.

GREAT Idea, holy cow. Im seriously in AW right now, Whats it cost do get into something like this?
-
On the shotgun, did you leave the guts in the receiver? Then just dry thoroughly?
-
Nope, pulled all of the working pieces out of the receiver, taped off anything that I didn't want camo on.
