My girlfriend and I are in the market for a new pup and she came across this pup. Her freind sent her the picture and said she thinks its a walker mix and that the Spokane Shelter has a few of them. To me it looks like its got too stubby of nose and smallish ears to be a hound/hound mix. What do you hound guys think? I've only ever had pointers but would love to get into running hounds.

Darn, i thought this thread was about zombies. :dunno:

I know. My girlfriend said that her and her friend were going to go look at them tomorrow. I'm afraid if that happens she will take one look at the cute little bugger and it would be coming home with her. That's why I was looking for some more info. If I knew it was a good mix I wouldn't really mind, but I don't want to end up with something that won't hunt.

All I can tell you is don't trust what the shelter is saying. Why? Well, for one, my father is a vet and my fiance works at a local shelter here. I can assure you 95% of them have NO idea what they're talking about. We adopted a pup several years ago that they claimed to be a lab puppy. I knew full well it wasn't. When she grew up and you searched dalmation/pit bull mix, her look alikes were all over the page.
I do get a lot of amusement out of their guessing game though.

Looks like a walker pup to me.

I have a purebred black lab that I got from my uncle at Conway Kennel and I swear that sometimes she looked like a weiner dog when we first got her. Much like people, a dog will look different when it matures.

I'm not sure if you're agreeing with me, or giving another perspective, but you are supporting my point... so... yup.

Looks like it has walker in it, fine for a pet. If you are wanting a hunting dog don't get junk dogs, get a pup you know how the parents are as hunting dogs.

I was agreeing with you. Puppies CAN look like something but as they get older it becomes much easier to tell. Lucky for me I knew the breeders for both my dogs so I know they are pure.

Bearpaw is right. I'm a huge fan of people adopting pets from shelters, those pups need a good home. However if you have certain goals in mind for your dog especially when is comes to a hunting dog the pound is not where you go. If you are looking for a family dog, that pup looks fantastic

That sure in the heck looks to me like a pointer/setter cross, confirmation and head shape of a setter with the short hair of the pointer.

I thought that too at first, but the legs look really thick for a pointer or setter and suggests hound to me. Luckily for me all of these pound pups were males and my GF really wants a female dog, so she didn't end up bringing one home. I do hope that they have, or will, find good homes.
