heres another thing to consider. more fat and less protein improves your dogs bird sniffing ability. hmmmmm. according to this all the people feeding high protein diets (Purina Pro plan performance) are selling their dogs and themselves short in the field.
kind of makes sense since protein takes so much water and energy to break down.
"Less protein results in a faster return to normal body temperature after activity, which translates to better olfactory ability"
so a dog that stays cooler uses his nose better- thats pretty basic- but I never considered it from the protein angle before.

You want to run a high protein diet so your dog recovers quiker and has more stamina. A higher fat diet does increase there nose but not drastic enough to switch. I have pointer and I have hounds. I keep them on a high protein diet while hunting cause there always running. If your dog gets tired after a hour or two hunt then it would hurt to go to a high fat diet. My dogs hunt hard from sun up to sun down I have a setter and a pointer that you cant tire out and thats the truth... There on a high protein diet so I can hunt and run them day after day.... jmo

I think I'll trust the guys who've run performance dogs in field trials for 35+ years winning nationals and making champions over what some kid in a lab coat observes with dogs who walk around a room sniffing suitcases.

No neccessarily, Did you know Purina used to have a kennel at Carnation Farms years ago? Along with research on Dairy cows they also studied performance dogs running field trials and supplied food to field trialers and evaluated their reports.
