Title: ALMOST
Post by: slbeasley on October 02, 2008, 01:03:17 PM
I was able to put a good stalk on this mule deer (you can see her bedded down in the shadows in the upper left). I took a 60 yard shot. It was a clean miss as the arrow broke the ground at her feet.

Love the pic.  Too bad she has you busted, judging by her ears.  I wish I would have gotten out this year for archery....  Always the late season. (Elk)

Not trying to be a dick, but...  why the f- are you taking a 60 yd shot at a bedded animal?  Sounds like pretty poor judgement to me.

To clear the record. I didn't take a 60 yd shot at her while she was bedded. I came out from behind the tree the moment the wind swithced and started blowing toward her. I could see her ears perked up. I figured she would run. I stood there for a moment. When she didn't stand I got back down on the ground and crawled about 30 more yards in her direction. I stopped when she stood. Then I stood and took the shot. That was my 2nd stalk on a mulie. I'm from Missouri, stationed at Ft. Lewis. I'm aquainted with whitetails that run at the twitch of finger. I was amazed that she watched me crawl toward her with the wind at my back. Of course I did use strict scent control and sprayed down with HS Fresh Earth. But still . . .

That's what makes it so fun.  Great photo by the way.  May want to keep some of those evergreens between you and the critter until that magic range is broken.  Also fun to guess on their escape route, position off to one side, and have the cameraman attempt to drive them past you.  Spot and stock solo is at the top of my list.

Thanks for your service time.

If you get some liberty / leave in late Nov. early Dec. and want a chance at a muley shoot me an email.

face in the middle of the shadow looks cool....took me some time to see the deer. Think i would have waited for a closer shot under those circumstances.
