Title: How do you setup your trap?
Post by: nategood21 on April 01, 2013, 11:03:29 PM
What do you look for when picking an area? What are the steps you take to setup a trap once you find that area? how much do you cover it up? What do you leave open? How much dirt do you put in the bottom of the cage to hide the cage bottom?  Pretty much what all do you do when your going to put out a new trap, from beginning to end? I'm looking for real advice, YouTube isn't the best teacher :chuckle:

Preferably for bobcat. thinking about making some weasel boxes too. I've never seen one before but I assume they're out there.

You will have snow. Look for tracks and let them guide you as to location.
Flatten ground, trap need to be firm. I often wire to a tree on side so it can't tip over.
Attach bait in cage with wire
Optional, visual atractant in back feathers/furbe
Cover floor, just enough so floor cannot be seen.
Same with pan
Cover out side trap, sides, top, back I use a lot of evergreen boughs mostly
Small bait out side trap wired to tree, Should not be visible to birds.
LDC lure up high above trap

That's my routine.

Do you have trouble with coyotes taking the small bait wired to the tree outside the trap?

It happens but less often then you think it would.

Don,t forget to check what the dominant wind direction will be for the set you will make. Set up wind when possible. Most predators will walk the down wind side of a thicket when hunting or keep in mind where the prey will be that they will be looking for and set the trap to where the predator will be walking past, so he can smell down wind of trap.

I didn't even think about that. I kinda just set em up in areas ppl wouldn't see them and had some sign around. thanks for the advise. i did have a few traps get set off from something crawling on top of em -.- or they would push the brush off of em and lay on top.
