Got my first bear with a bow on the ground last year what a rush cant wait for august but since i cant posess a firearm i think i might invest in some of that bear spray. I ran into a bear on easter about twelve feet away equipped with nothing more then a pellet gun again what a rush i tried to shoo it off but this dude held his ground never seen that before must be cause he just came out of hybernation i dont know but it sure was cool/a little spooky.

Does anyone on here do much bear hunting archery style call me crazy but it has got to one of the most exciting things ive done.

I haven't..but I got a trip planned for August. :)

I shot my first bear with a bow last year in my treestand. Then had a mamma and two cubs come by right at dark while I was waiting for my bear to die. It was a bit spooky , but she ran off when I yelled at her. Not sure I like the ground hunting of them thou. I will stick to my treestand.

I am just curious, since you can't posses a fire arm can you have a starters pistol? I have had to fire a round into the ground to scare a bear away that was challenging me before. I know the loud bang did the trick and it took off like a race horse. I am sure that the bear spray would work at close range.

I like the ground hunt, without bait its hard to sit in a tree stand, aside from the sow with cubs ive chase bear through the woods with nothing more then a camera one day it might catch up with me but only time will tell. I also did incounter one sow that left one cub behind with me now that was crazy.
-
I still dont know how to do the quote thing but whats a starters pistol is is considered a fire arm if so no i can not.
-
shot some bears with bow and arrows. supper fun for sure!!!!
-
Damnit some bacon on a biscuit sounds awesome right now!

As for the starter pistol, it shoots blanks, but technically could fire a projectile. I'd stay away from the starter pistol. Johnny would be all over you for that! Pack a whistle to scare bears away.
RCW 9.41.010 section" (7) "Firearm" means a weapon or device from which a projectile or projectiles may be fired by an explosive such as gunpowder."

I'll be hunting with a bow this spring bear season.

I agree! A good rape whistle or small air horn sold as rape defense should work just as well. When my mother was growing up on the coast she tells of bear approaching them at the buss stop regularly. They used a spray bottle with bleach in it. She tells the stories of hearing them running nonstop until out of ear range. So I would expect the bear spray should work as well.
My brother is an EMT. He has a long list of stories about treating people that were hit by their own pepper spray as the wind blew it back into their face. Not sure I would want that if I were trying to get away from a bear. Makes me wonder if this little pepper blaster from Kimber wouldn't be a better option :dunno: http://www.kimberamerica.com/pepperblaster (http://www.kimberamerica.com/pepperblaster) I'd sure feel better with more than two shots though.

Yep I have.... Three Bears all with my bow. I would carry spray if I were you.

Bear Spray works perfect, I also cannot possess a firearm and I actually feel safer with my spray, I can blast an animal/person and it does enough damage for me to make my point and or get away, while not worrien about getting charges filed for hurting an animal/person. I very very highly recommend the UDAP 13oz can.
IT will give you up to 9 seconds of full blast at 35 feet, Fogg style. They also have smaller sizes though.
It was actually created by Mark Matheny who had a close encounter with a full size Grizzly and survived thanks to some simple wimpy defense spray, He then figured being as this little spray saved his life, He would go on to create his own spray, Which right now is rated as one of the most powerful in the world on the market for sale.
You can find his product on his website below or somewhere like Cabelas. Cheers man be safe.
Heres Mark Matheny's Story, Its a pretty good read.

I will be hunting bear with bow this year. My first year.
Its a step down from wrestling one and stabbing it in the heart with a spear like I origionaly wanted to, but I guess thats not legal in our state :( :chuckle:
-
Never done it but i hope to take my first bear with a bow this year. Should be pretty intense. I will be carrying spray for sure.

Bear spray is OK if you're really close to the bear and you have it that handy. However, if the wind is blowing the wrong way, it can disable you at a critical moment. Unless you're talking about the NE corner of the state and the very remote possibility of grizzly contact, most bears will elect to leave the area if you stand your ground and talk to them while making your self look big - put your coat up on your arms straight up and/or stand on a stump. Don't look them in the eyes and stand your ground if they charge. I've been bluffed and it may well fill your pants, but chances are that a blackie isn't going to attack you. The instances of black bear attacks in this country are infinitesimal. Most happen on the east coast.
-
I've shot a few with rifles that where in bow range for sure. Hope to get it done with the bow this year.
-
Been hit with oc spray for military police training if your determined enough you can still flee after being sprayed directly in the eyes. that was the point of the training. You will just look like a babbling girl for the next 2 hours then again when you take a shower lol

I wont rely on hoping I can be big enough to scare a bear away being as Im 5'7ish 175lbs. Id much rather have a can of OC on my hip. Which you can also fire, from the hip. I can draw my canister just as fast as I would be able to draw a pistol.

The stuff for bears is much hotter than the spray approved for human use.
Smossy, I'm not going to enter a debate on brand loyalty, but Counter Assault is recommended by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee, UDAP is not. I'm sure both would work, but I got with the recommended brand.
I carry spray quite often.

Regardless! I still love Bear spray In general. Dont plan on making too many trips into any chunk of the woods without it. \
Also, me and my lady do alot of hiking.
Ive heard of trail pirates, Read a few stories of people in somewhat remote hiking area's who robb people at gunpoint for everything they have on them. Dont feel comfortable without SOMETHING. Also have a few very sharp knives within reaching distance, one on my left shoulder with a kydex locking sheeth facing handle down, just a quick reach across and a good yank and its on.

We had grizzly contact in the NE. last year. Not as rare as some may think. Darn paw print track was 8in wide. He chased a blackie out of his territory across the gravel road, stopped looked at my friend sitting on his quad, and walked back down the draw. Guessed at 500=650lb? He has been spotted grazing in same spot the last two years. Last year a muzzleloader tried to shoot him at 250 yards across the draw! He crashed his bike trying to stop when he saw it. It was private property he shot from and we busted him told him it was a griz and such. Nice guy though. Three bear contacts with blackies in a week, missed shot on good bear and got a little bear. Always have my bear spray with me. Had a blackie stand up in front of me here on wetside, acting tuff didnt scare him. An arrow did. He was surrounded but I didnt realize it and the bear did. Ya never know. Wolves howling 100yards away while harvesting bear in NE wa. Cougar under my treestand at sunrise scared me good too over here few years back. :dunno:
