A friend of my dad's was out near a clearcut the other day and happened to notice two pigmy owls sitting in a tree top and ended up getting some cool photos as well as a rare photo of some "owl love" :chuckle: .
I was telling him that I would imagine its a pretty rare occurance to actually get a photo of owls mating.

I don't want to thread jack but I guess I will anyway since I have been wondering what type of bird this is. Could it be a pigmy? It showed up at my house a little over a year ago and would perch on a tiny ledge under the eave of my house right outside my sliding glass door. He would show up right at dark most nights and hang out until right about dawn. This went on off and on for about a month...he would not show for a couple days and would then be there for 4-5 straight. He would always tuck his head in the corner and I could open the door, talk, make noise, dog running in and out and he wouldn't move an inch. Never saw his face just the rear view. This was taken with my phone held about 18 inches from him.

Its hard to tell in the photo but that is a 2x4 on his left and the ledge he is perched on is about 1" to 1 1/2" wide.

Have so diesinker and leave those critters to themselves. Mondo's delete those porno picks! :hello:

Sounds like more than likely it is, I think. Hard to tell in the picture. I am not a expert on birds or owls, I dont think there is any other kind of small owl that lives around here except the pygmy. I believe spotted owls are kind of small but still noticably bigger than the pygmy owls.
It is kinda cool how they will sit there and stair at you let you get real close but that never happens when I have a camera handy.

Spotted Owls are about the same size as a Barred Owl, much bigger than that. We do have the Northern Saw-whet Owl here that is about the same size as the Pygmy.
Those are great pics!

Those are Pygmy Owls. Outstanding shots. Real killers. Can take prey twice as large as they are.

Spotted dog, lots of birds find a spot at night like that to perch. My guess would be not an owl as they would be out feeding at night. The tail seems too long for an owl's shape as well. :twocents:

This looks like a little puffed wren. We get them in our eaves too.
