Title: Archery ELK
Post by: birdstew on April 04, 2013, 01:26:45 PM
With my Job i meet a lot of people and have lived in a few different states. I lived in Washington State 2000-2007 i meet a guy and this is how he hunted. I just moved back to Washington Sep 2012 and now work with a guy that does the same thing. So that's what brought me to ask this question. Also have meet a few that has someone else buy a tag shot the animal then bring the friend out to tag the animal.

Its kinda a no brainer.  Don't leave home with out an elk tag.

Shooting it then getting caught without a tag is a surefire way to give the anti hunting groups more ammo. That and the local warden is the master of busting elk poachers. Buy the tags first.

A hunter would let it walk and poacher would not!   In other words the question is are you a hunter or a criminal.  Big difference in my book.

A criminal would shoot it.  A complete moron would admit on a hunting forum that he would shoot it.

Let it walk. Make sure to buy the combo next time, so there is no ethical dilemma.

Geze...  I would never do that as I love to hunt.  I am not sure what I would do if I was not able to hunt because I did something as stupid as this question described.

I imagine not having a tag could be because you have an elk tag for a different weapon.

Still a rather pointless question.

:yeah:
It seems by looking at the poll numbers that we have a few poachers on here.  The stupidity of some people never ceases to amaze me.

People laugh at me for buying every possible tag and license you can think of so that will happen as little as possible. Last year I spent about 800 on licenses.
But it has happened a few times before and will happen again. And I will always let them walk. Always have always will.

so what this sounds like to me is a guy wanting a second elk tag by having someone else (not a hunter) by a tag so he can shoot another (second) elk.... That is poaching!

This is why the state needs to have a deadline for the sale of tags, just like Oregon. The deadline should be the day before the season starts for that tag. Then this type of thing wouldn't be happening.

Related to this thread:
the day before muzzy deer opener 2009.  I was scouting for the next day/bear hunting.  I had a wide 4x4 whitetail at 80 yards that would be legal in 12 hours.  Didn't shoot it.  It's worth it to resist, makes you confident in your moral code.

Similar deal for me. l was out on the last day of modern late elk (modern late deer started the next day) and had a nice 4pt Blacktail step out in front of me. He then proceeded to walk down the trail I was on straight at me until he was about 30m away, stopped, watched me, and then walked into the brush. I had the tags in my pocket and everything, just couldn't bring myself to take risk losing everything over shooting one nice deer.

I could not agree with you guys more. Tag sales stop the day before seasons starts. It would really help cut down on dishonest people poaching animals and then buying a tag after killing a animal.

Really cannot believe ANYONE would check the other box. Either they're being sarcastic or they're not really hunters.

I agree that Washington should implement a tag dead line..

That would be great. I always seem to hear people say they will buy tags later. Makes me mad. i think that would solve a lot of questioning.

Stopping tag sales before the season starts is not going to stop someone from poaching like this. They will just have that friend or whomever buy the tag anyway before the season and still go out and poach. This is an ethical situation where someone is willing to break the law to take more game than what they are allowed under the law... They need to be turned it!!!

I caught the biggest blacktail I have ever seen bedded down in a clearcut about 30 yds away, the day before the season. I could have shot him six times before he even stood up... to this day I haven't seen a deer that even came close to it. It haunts my dreams.

If 200,000 purchase tags thur WDFW and 10% would be 20,000 hunter with out tag would try to Poaching.  :yike:

First year bow hunting deer I walked around a clump of trees in a downpoor and 30yds broadside rubbing a tree was a huge bull. It was archery elk season but I didnt have an archery elk tag. Shooting him never crossed my mind.

Remember, you are who you are when nobody is watching.

I think its even worse than that.  This sample of 125 isn't random.  Its a sample of people that are so interested in the sport, that they read about it, and talk about it, and think about it, and have a major exposure to ethical hunters by being a part of this forum.  I think that forum members probably have a much smaller percentage of poachers than people who just hunt when its time, who don't have any desire to be a part of a community like those who joined this forum did.

In my opinion it wouldn't even be a question I would have to much to lose because not only is it a hobby and passion it helps to feed my family.

It seems to be a question about trophy hunting. I Could not be proud of a trophy I did not earn. During archery deer I am out Bear hunting with a rifle, I would say every year I see atleast one 6 point bull I could kill. If we all cheated just because the chance came up we would not have The kind of hunting we do.

Watched a beautifull 7X7 bull wallow and play within archery range a day before the season opened. Let him walk never to be seen by me again! I think you wouldnt be human if you didnt have thoughts of shooting its how you react that makes you a criminal or a sportsman!
