Title: Hawkin Rifle!!! Pedersoli or Thompson Center?
Post by: kerrdog on April 09, 2013, 07:09:24 PM
Now that I've got the Knight Disc Extreme, I've become strangely attracted to Hawkin Rifles.  Go Figure.   :dunno: (I've also lost interest in Centerfire rifles, but I digress.)

So.  Pedersoli has all kinds of cool rifles and pistols.  Are they good?  They are sorta expensive.  It seems like a pedersoli hawkin goes for $800 and a T/C Hawkin is around $450? (on Gunbroker)

Anyone know the real deal?

I have a couple of TC Renegades that could go if you might be interested.. They all have set triggers and are older versions... But then again they are not cheap since they are not made anymore...

Here is three more but no for sale...

That should give you an ideal what a Renegade is... I actually like them better than the Hawken because they are plain jane in looks...

The Thomson's are American made. Some Pedersoli models I have seen pictures of look a little more authentic. The people that I know that have had Renegades have thought highly of them. I have a T.C. NewEnglander. I bought it as a kit as I was going in from 7 to 11 miles in the Wynoochee and wanted a lighter gun than what I was using. I never did get a elk there but did along the Hoh and other places. I have had no problems with the New Englander.  With a .54 round ball I could easily shoot a 3 inch group at 75 yards. I was using 100 grain of 2ff and a 0.53 round ball. I never lost a elk or deer. I can't see iron sights any longer, not even peep. I bought a 12 gauge barrel for it and have taken a few turkeys with it. I think what can be said about the New Englander would also pertain to the Renegades as far as function. I have seen both Renegades and New Englanders decorated with brass nails as the indians did with trade rifles. They looked nice.

Have an older TC Hawken w/ green mountain LRH barrel on it and love it.  Also been kinda looking for a clean renegade... you got a slow-twist .54 for sale, sabotloader?  If so, PM me if the OP doesnt want it.

Hey Sabotloader!

So, you've got like...a collection of Renegades?  Was that you're favorite in the past before the Knights?   I do see the practical advantage of the renegade....unless you're fighting a fierce enemy, run out of ammo, and need the sharp angles of the hawkin stock to pierce your enemy's brain pan (or shoulder.)  But it's the lines of the Hawkin that make it look soo sweet.

All of mine are 1-48's.  I do not know how I ended up with so many - but I really do like them.  I have had 3-4 Hawkens but they are all gone now - traded for Renegades...

This was my last one...

Forgot about this one - it is a 1-28 twist

If you like the looks of the Pedersoli, check out the Lyman Great Plains.  I have one I built from a kit.

Actually, I'm most interested in the lock and 1" flats stock, the barrel is a secondary concern.  PM me with a price  if the OP isn't interested in one of your Renegades.

Kerrdogg, what you wanting to do with the sidelock?  You going to keep the disc extreme as well?

I do not know that it really matters, but the Cabelas Hawkens were built by Intvestarms of Italy.  Looking at the Cabelas site now, it appears that they have dropped the Cabelas Hawken and Interarms and have moved to Pedersoli to make their traditional rifles.  Interarms also builds the rifles for Lyman.  I have a Lyman Trade Rifle - awesome gun!

They still carry a good value...

Oh and I was at cabelas on Tuesday and they had the invest arms hawken on display for 249.00. If I had the extra dow I would have bought one.  :bash:

Lyman Great Plains Rifle. To heck with those shallow groove TC barrels.

I thought the rifling in my TC (NW Explorer) looked shallow.  I figured all muzzleloaders were like that.  My rifling in my Knight disk extreme looks slightly deeper, but nothing like my Remington 700.
