Title: What should I ask for my truck?
Post by: Recurve-Elk on April 14, 2013, 11:10:27 AM
Hey all I am going to sell my 2003 2wd reg cab ford ranger. Its got just over 97000 miles.  Its got a 3 inch lift on it, good tread on mud tires, cd player, cloth seats, tinted windows, headache rack, and d loop tow points on the front.  What would you ask for it?  Its in great shape and runs perfect.  Blue book shows like 2800 which seems low, dealers ask around 6500 for my truck (stock), which seems too high.  What do you think is a reasonable number for my truck?

Here is a pic for reference.

What is NADA value for private sale?

Just looked it up.  It didn't say anything about private sale, but it said trade in value with the condition my truck is, at about 4000 *not considering any of the upgrades ive got on it.*  Trade in values are lower than private sale values aren't they?  I can't imagine dealers giving a very good trade rate lol.

look on craigslist for trucks matching as closely to yours as you can, miles, condition, engine, etc etc etc. this will be under, for sale by owner....forget the dealers....now average out those prices and sell yours just under average and it should go fast.

Go to auto trader.com and find 3 rangers within 30 miles of your location that are the same style, and options and condition as yours and in the same year or newer ( not older as older vehicles that yours are not worth as much).  Average them together and tack on 800 - 1000 for all your extra add-ons. This will reflect the "fair market value" of what your truck is worth in your area.

Which engine/ trans you got in it?   Trim level?  Factory options?

your upgrades are not worth what you payed for them now. unless you can  find someone who wants what you have and is willing to pay it you cant expect much for upgrades.

It is and always will be worth what it is worth to you,If you cant get what its worth to you keep it.Never let people low ball you for what is yours.Yes it can be baught for less but is it worth as much as yours? Is something wrong with the one that is $3200 Probably. With what you described i would try about $5,400.I always say you get what you pay for.BTW nice truck.I bought my 1 ton for 12,000 it bluebooks at 23,000 (very low miles) bad mileage cost to much for most to own.But its mine and i wouldnt sell it for less than 20k.

Just my opinion, but when pricing used rigs, you rarely get much out of the add ons (like the headache rack).   Sometimes you get a fraction of the cost, but sometimes it's just enough to seal the deal.

Nice truck, though.

Try edmunds.com to price out your rig.  Will give you trade in, private sale, and retail values.  You might be able to add a little bit for your extras, but not much.  Also, as others suggested, find similar rigs on auto trader as close to you as possible and see what they are selling for.  Good luck.

Does it have the 4.0 V6? Which transmission? Being 2 wheel drive makes it harder to sell. How's it do for gas mileage?

Unfortunately no, its pretty much base model. 2.3l 4 cylander, 5 speed manual.  But it does do good on gas mileage.  Its supposed to get 29 highway, but because the tires are bigger probably more like 21-25 depending on how I drive.

I would say you are closer to 3k than 5. That's just my personal opinion though so who knows? :dunno:

That's actually a great selling point with the price of gas being what it is, and likely no chance of the price ever going down. I would like to have a truck like that just for the gas mileage. However it wouldn't work for me just because I have two kids so I need to have seating for four.

I'd ask 4000 but don't take any less than 3500
