Title: First real Catfish Tournament
Post by: Machias on April 20, 2013, 04:58:06 PM
Wohoo, had a blast today.  Pretty windy for most of the morning, but we didn't mind because the fish were being very cooperative.  My fishing partner, Lloyd, hooked and landed a real nice 32 pounder, then I hooked and landed a 35.7 fish.  Then I landed a 29.90 fish and three 8 to 15 pounders.  Then Llyod landed a fish right around 40 pounds.  So we culled the 32 pounder.  Caught a couple more small fish in the 10 to 12 pound range.  Llyod also managed to land a nice gar.  We moved a couple of times and had several nibbles but no takers.  About 2 hours before we are to head in for the weigh in Llyod was changing the water with our two big fish and discovered the big boy was not very active.  Lloyd checked and he bit Lloyd, but you could tell he wasn't very fiesty.  He ended up not making it.  You can't weigh a dead fish in.   So after catching 4 citations (citations are blue catfish over 30 pounds or 30 inches long) we only had one fish to weigh in.  Still managed to get big fish for the day and 2nd place.  Made $110 in the tournament, but that big boy dieing costs us $40.  Great day on the water.  We were fishing on the James River near Richmond, VA.

:)  Not my boat, but like his set up, lots of room.  The boat is called Therapy.  He is a 100% diabled Iraqi war vet.  The boat helped him get back to some sort of normal.  He was mortuary affairs in Iraqi and barely survived a mortar attacks.  He said when he was medically retired he sat in his basement and didn't speak to anyone for the first year.  He's a super nice guy.  He's come a long way.
