Nice fish, were these from the bank?  I caught a 14 pounder a couple of weeks ago at Bateman.  Then caught one and lost some at Lyon's Ferry 2 weekends ago.  Might try fishing by the 240 bridge this weekend if I can squander up a couple crappie or bluegill for bait from the I-82 pond after work today.

I hope you are eating them. I'd trade a pack or two of venison form some fresh filets. They really aren't hard to clean...knife a pair of skinning pliers.....some fried fish is sounding good!
Title: Re: Cat Fish
Post by: hunt_fish on May 05, 2013, 10:04:57 AM
Yeah catfish actually taste pretty good, skinning pliers to take the skin off, put them in milk  for awhile and fry them.

This is kind of late but at Lyon's Ferry, if you have a boat I'd head straight to the mouth of the Palouse, fish in 2-4 feet of water.  All those fish you'll see jumping are catfish, the first time my dad and I went there, we thought they were carp but it was just all the catfish jumping in that 2-4 foot of water.  Same type of fishing as in the Yak though, you can use a bobber, put your bait 2-3 feet under it or you can just fish from the bottom.  Cutbait of course is the best bait, I've been catching a couple crappie on the I-82 ponds for bait, got a couple more 2 days ago when my gf and I head there on Monday.  Pikeminnow should be good too, you should be able to catch a couple at the Lyon's Ferry KOA off their dock pretty easily.  If you're from shore, I'd try under the train tressel by the hatchery or mouth of the Tucannon if the water isn't running like crazy.  Or if you get some balls, you could try going to the Palouse Falls and hiking down the rock slide and walking along the Palouse River down a little to try for catfish, bass, panfish.  I haven't tried it but I know you'll for sure catch fish there if you hike down there.  I've heard good things about those spots.  I know you can rent kayaks too, which I might do Monday to fish the mouth of the Palouse.  I've only fished the 240 bridge once, about 2 weeks ago with the girlfriend, she was getting bites from something, I'm guessing pikeminnow since they were just tiny nibbles getting the meat off.  I'll try it again sometime though, did see a couple catfish jump while we were there.

Dang you, haha you guys are the leaders for that derby.  I went there on Monday, caught 2 fish from the bank.  One of them would've given that top fish a run for it's money.  I put it on my girlfriend's stupid chain link stringer which I knew I shouldn't have done.  I look down while I was doing something and I see the fish a couple feet in front of me, I'm like huh?  Then notice it's off the stringer,  :bash:  Off it went 2 seconds later.  Caught another around 2-3 lbs 20 minutes after that.  Bite shut down around 1:45 PM yesterday in the afternoon.  I need to try taking the yaks you can rent there next week and try the Palouse.

Well i actually let go most of my fish. I keep them long enough to take a picture then let them go. I only keep the ones that dont look like they will make it or swallow the hook ext. Especially the big females full of eggs, I think everyone should let those fish go.

Here's the 14 pounder I caught at the mouth of the Yak last month.  We went fishing at Lyon's Ferry last Saturday.  Had two bites, my girlfriend's reel came off when she had one on, lol, then ended up coming off when she was trying to put the reel back on the rod.  I had a bite, when I got the rod, it stopped biting, put it back down thinking it might come back but nothing after 10 minutes and it still had the bait so it must've moved on or felt me pick the rod up.  I have more pics on my phone of catfish I've caught but hadn't put them on my computer yet.

So today i took the scetchyest catfishing trip. My buddy and i put in at snivley boat launch on the yak. We floated from there to twin bridges in a 16 foot canoe.  :bdid: Now for all of you who have not seen the Yakima river lately its runny VERY fast. We had a few close calls while fishing but the real fun was when we tryed to take out. We over shot our landing zone strait into a tree grabbing on for dear life and trying to not roll the canoe. All and all we made it out and even caught a few nice channels!

We were fishing from shore so not able to fish the mouth of the Palouse, we were in the main river on the Snake in a spot I've had luck at in a 60 foot hole area.  I won't be able to fish the mouth of the palouse until the dad comes here for our annual trip June 13th unless me and the girlfriend take the kayaks from the KOA out there to fish one of these weekends.  We were using crappie, I need to start stocking up on pikeminnow from the Walla Walla River after work a couple nights.

Isn't it illegal to use game fish as cut bait? Bass, trout, crappie, perch etc. I could be wrong.

We were wondering that too, I'll have to look through the book again, but if it is, a lot of people do do it.  It's the first year I've tried it as bait because I've heard others using it on forums.  If so, I'll just have to stick to pikeminnow.

Hi JS,

Looks like canoe trip was exciting.  Never fished that section of river yet.  Is it OK w/prop outboard, or is it a drift or jet motor kind of boat section of river???

I have a 16.5' w/25hp prop welded aluminum boat.  Just wanted to know if it's too shallow or rocky for prop motor.

Thanks,

ET
Title: Re: Cat Fish
Post by: jstanley on May 16, 2013, 11:10:23 AM
Its a drift or drift section during the summer. When my dad had his willie boat we used to have to drag it across rock bars. We even bottom in the canoe. However right now when the water is this high i wouldn't be scared to take a smaller boat down the river. We have done it in the winter during duck season. you just have to know when to pull up the motor and drift through shallow spots.

There should be some, but very very rare.  I know of one that was caught down on the Oregon side of the Snake last year in the Richland area from what some guys said on another forum.

Does anyone know if you can use two poles in the Palouse if you have the two pole endorcement. How do you find out where is legal and not legal for this. I don't have one but would get one if it would help me get rid of Joshs Hat.

I believe the two pole endorsement only cover lakes, and not even all lakes. I thought there was a list in the fishing regs?

Title: Re: Cat Fish
Post by: sirfunkeybut on May 27, 2013, 04:03:22 PM
this is from the WDFW website:

Exclusions (See list of excluded lakes and ponds)

The two-pole endorsement is allowed on most lakes, ponds and reservoirs. Approximately 145 lakes and ponds are excluded from the two-pole option based on conservation and fishery management goals.

Criteria for excluded lakes, ponds and reservoirs:
•Lakes containing ESA-listed species, determined on a case-by-case basis
•Lakes connected to anadromous waters during fisheries for anadromous fish, i.e. salmon
•Lakes managed for natural trout production
•Juvenile-only lakes
•Fly-fishing only waters
•Lakes with selective gear rules and a reduced daily limit for trout

The two pole endorsement is not valid on the Columbia or Snake rivers mainstem, except Lake Roosevelt and Rufus Woods Reservoir.

In general, two-pole fishing is not allowed in saltwater, or in rivers, streams and beaver ponds. However, WDFW is evaluating areas and times when surplus fish may be available for harvest and the two-pole option could be allowed.

The mouth on that fish doesn't look right.  It looks almost like a carp/sucker mouth. :dunno:

Must be nice to be a senior in high school, graduating in two days and being able to fish 6 hours a day! I'm getting kind of jealous!

Nice stringer of fish, Jesse!
