Title: Where to buy my first hunting rifle? Savage 16FHSS in .308
Post by: acnewman55 on May 06, 2013, 01:08:59 PM
I think I've finally narrowed down the field for my first hunting rifle.

I've almost settled on the Savage 16 Weather Warrior in .308 (FHSS) with a hinged floorplate.

I've been looking around online to gauge a realistic price so I can determine what my budget is going to be, but I've only been able to find it in-stock at a few sites.

This rifle doesn't cross me as one that should be hard to come by... Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?

What sites do you all use for purchasing?   :dunno:

Hey, that's the same rifle I would love to own, with the exception of the hinged floorplate.  I would definitely go with detachable box magazines.

Out of curiosity, why do you prefer a hinged floor plate over a detachable box magazine?

My current hunting rifle is an older Savage 30-06 has a blind (stagger feed, no hinged floorplate) magazine and it is a real annoyance to load and unload.  I bought it because I couldn't turn down the stupid low price. :)

The general impression I get is that hunters prefer a hinged floor-plate to prevent dust from getting into the action during the hunt.  Everyone else says it's just a matter of personal preference.

Since I haven't hunted, I don't really have an opinion.

If I end up with a box mag I'll be just as happy.

Maybe other guys know something I don't know, but I can tell you getting in and out of the truck is a lot easier when you only have to drop or insert a magazine instead of loading your rifle one round at a time and unloading one round at a time...  It gets old really fast.  I recommend going with the detachable magazines.

I might have some dust in the crevices of my shotgun after spending all day walking around in sage brush, but I really don't think it is much of an issue in WA.  It will take a lot of dust to choke any bolt action rifle to the point of malfunctioning.

Do what you want, but you might want to PM mountainman.   :dunno:

Ended up finding what I was looking for at a retailer here in Seattle.

Picked up the Savage 16 in .308 with box mag and a Nikon 3-9x40 BDC scope package.  Got a great deal on it.

Now to teach myself how to shoot.

Very nice! If you are over this way, let me know and we can go shooting somewhere.
