It's a Wilson Snipe.

I forgot about the coot!  It's probably more popular to shoot though and not just with shotguns.

It's a Wilson Snipe.

I should have known that :bash:

One great picture!  I like the fact you can see the nails on the up foot.

What do you mean by "least popular"?
Do you mean the least hunted, or do you mean the least liked?
Sometimes something is not "popular" (liked very much), but hunted quite a bit, simply because it is the only thing available to shoot - such as the case with Coots.

Do coots taste alot different than ducks? I knew a guy who loved to make jerky outta them, but I never got to try it.

From my experience, coot is actually quite good. Better than most duck. Most wretch at the idea :dunno: of eating them; but I guarantee few have tried. Like most things- don't knock it till you try it!

never did coot jerky myself but did get a recipy for coot chilly from a buddy. not bad but it needed more spice & less corn. many the day i could have slayed limits of coots if i found a way to make them edible for the family.
would think coot jerk would be a bit greasy?? i always have dehydrated my waterfoul jerk. wonder if a fire/smoke deal would work??

So they must be more greasy than duck?

clean one, & wash your hands.
never pass on a recipie that sounds terible untill you have tried it.
like i said, with some modifications, that chilli would have been good.

maybe it's a color thing?
The first coot I ever cleaned, when I was much younger, looked greyish-green meat on the inside.
Haven't shot one since.... is that normal?

But you're right.
Maybe I should try it out first.

I tried coot once.  Never again.

I did see a hunting show a while back where they cooked up some coots.  They filleted the breast meat and soaked it in buttermilk overnight.  I don't remember the rest of the recipe since I didn't ever plan to use it, but apparently they found a way to make it edible.

I have had coots several times, and have never tasted the same... The first time they tasted great! I couldn't tell the difference between them and some widgon i shot.. The second time i made them for my girlfriend, now wife... :puke: It tasted like tough liver. I have had it a few other times but it never tasted as good as the first time...

I think animals flavor is largely reflected from what they eat... Anything corn fed is.

I have also tasted meganser. :puke:
