Headed to Kauai, Hawaii in December. Christmas in Hawaii, means a fishing trip of course. Has anyone here ever been over there and did a charter trip and if so who did you go with. Starting the research now to see what boats look promising. Never been over there before so I am a total newby to any of the Island stuff.

For my honeymoon a few years ago I did a half day trip with Captain Don...Had a decent time and we got into some fish. He's reasonably priced and a nice guy.
-
Thanks, that is one of the boats I am seriously looking at right now.
-
Just remember that whatever fish are caught belong to the Captain and not you. They usually take the fish and then sell it.

I saw that in the websites, most say you will take some with you and the boat sells the rest. I just want to catch fish that we don't have here, that is my reason for wanting to do a charter. :)

I have done a few trips out of Lahaina on Maui, just took one on Sunday actually. They have always been fair when it comes to giving you part of the catch to eat while you're there....enough to feed you and any other guests for a meal or two. That's been my experience at least.
On Sunday the boat got 7 mahi mahi and 3 tuna (two big eye and one yellowfin). The mahi mahi were 12-25lbs and the tuna were 20-30lbs.

I love Kauai. Checkout the rum plantation and don't forget to eat at chicken-in-a-barrel. The safari zipline tour is a blast.
-
And for the love of god, go eat at the Beach House at Poipu. Best restaurant on the island. Reservations required. Order any of the fish in beurre blanc sauce. It is phenomenal.

I can't wait for December and the trip, the more I find out about the place the funner it looks. Never been to any of the islands before so I am a "New Guy" this time :chuckle:

If you like to snorkel I would go spear fishing was there last summer for 2 weeks spear fished every day it was a blast can't wait to go back!!! You can spear on just about every reef there . Any ? Just ask I will be glad to help there is a place in kapaa you can pick up a spear gun or pole spear for a good price . They also have the fishin regs there . I think in December it is lobster season if you can get a good dive light an are not scared of the dark it's a blast if you can find a good spot !!!

Thanks for the advise, the trip is booked, I will be on Captain Don's boat December 31st :IBCOOL:

I will be there at that time too! I was thinking of trying to go after some peacock bass while we were there and one day on a charter. Where are you staying?
-
We have a condo rented at Wyndham Bali Hai Villas, in Princeville.
I talked to Captain Don yesterday, the boat on the 31st is a shared charter if you want to call and jump on. Right now there are 2 of us, my brother-in-law and I for our group. I was looking at the full day shared if you go to his web site http://www.captaindonsfishing.com/ (http://www.captaindonsfishing.com/)
let me know, would be fun to hook up with a Hunt Wa member for some fun fishing.
