im not sure if it actually helps, but i always put a bit of sand shrimp oil (left over from salmon and steelhead fishing) in the worm container and shake it to incorporate. it seems like i get a lot more bites if i do this. also if using worms ive had good luck with using "gang hooks" basically two hooks on one line to string up the worm.  i can post a pic if you want just let me know

Use a longer leader.  3 to 5 feet depending on the vegetation in the lake.  If that still doesn't work try right on the bottom.

Old wise man taught me this!

When fishing a lake for trout, reel in your bait like 4 feet at a time! Let it sit a few minutes then reel in another four feet.  Long leader, and your normal worm and power bait.

:yeah: I almost always use 4-6 feet of leader. Also make sure to use a light leader. In most trout lakes the lighter you go the more fish you will catch; 4# is max, 2# is better. Make sure your baits are floating. I like a size 6-8 single for most trout bait fishing, sometimes a 10. And a slip sinker is an absolute must.

There are places on lakes that are just lousy- tried moving around :dunno:

Also when you cast out keep feeding line till it hits bottom in that spot. Then gently bring the line in till you feel the sinker. I leave a little slack off the rod and lay the rod down and just watch the slack line. When the line moves a couple feet pick up the rod and do a LIGHT hook set, reel in fish and repeat.

Bring at least 3 different colors of power bait  to try and as mentioned longer leader. make sure you put enough pb on treble hook to get it to float. A small night crawler with injected air from a syringe is also effective.

I use a 2lb flouro leader 3 to 5 feet

Another trick is to squirt some scented oil (krill, anise etc) on your slip sinker.

Light leader is best, Trout have amazing eyesight. I usually do 1/2 oz sliding egg singer with a bead to the swivel. Then 3 foot 4lb leader, with a size 8/10 hook. Very small. I limit out every time. Chartreuse is one of the hottest hitters right now on the Berkleys Gulp "Salmon Eggs" Pick up a pack, throw 2 on a size 10 hook, and set your pole down and wait for that bite.

Best advice I have read on here. Inflated night crawler has been my best producer ever.

I always trout fish with spoons and spinners.  It's a little bit more fun in my opinion, since I'm constantly casting and retrieving as apposed to sending out power bait, sitting and waiting (I'm a little impatient).

I really like spoons around 1/4 oz. colored like rainbows or cuts.  I try to get ones with a little cup in them to create some wobble action. I've had 10x as much action with these then I have with spoons.

I will say, if you are fishing an area with a log of logs and debree using spoons and spinners can get expensive if you keep snagging them.

I'd agree with making the leader longer, and trying different colors of power bait until you find what they are biting on. I've also had good luck fishing with panther martin spinners from shore  :twocents:

Power bait seems to only work best on planted trout for the first week or two, after that they start feeding more on natural baits like bugs, flies and worms. I always do good trolling wooly buggers, leeches and small pink rubber worms

I have been making a ton of artificial salmon eggs for a bunch of old timers who have been knocking the snot out of the trout on them.  I soak them in a blend of anise, shrimp and crawdad for them.  Some even add a little tuna or shrimp juice to the bag as well.

If you have a boat and trolling motor it's great. I would focus on kokanee though for the table fare. But I'm sure a guy could row out and fish the shallows and docks early in the day before the boaters start tearing it up skiing etc.

Its a type of fly, caddis patterns work well too, as well as stone nymphs or gold beaded pheasant nymph's.

When fishing from shore or dock I use 4 lb test with 3 foot leader under a single large split or sliding weights (1/8 oz) use garlic marshmellow pushed up the shank of the hook then 1/3 nightcrawler threaded up the hook with the tail loose to wiggle around. the marshmellow keeps the nightcrawler above the weeds.
I have caught 10 times the amount of trout with this then with power bait. Though I admit some lakes power bait seems to be more effective, at least with the hatchery fish.

Anything meat that's not pure white. I fish to eat, Not just to fish. Thats how people roll when they are low/no income.

Fish to eat? people still do that :dunno: Trout are excellent food fair if they haven't been eating each others poop like hatchery trout. Smoking them helps disguise the poopy flavor a little i guess but still :chuckle: Nothing much better than a fresh piece of pan fried hold over tho, red meat and all, makes all your efforts worth it when you get one, but rarely do they hit PB.

Power bait is junk food for trout, and the ones that bite it are generally junk trout that taste like crap anyways, i say stick with natural bait if u want good eats :twocents:

if you have light line and a light rod...use just a hook on the main line nothing else...take a whole night crawler and about mid body feed the hook in... goal is to have the worm look as natural as possible. Take and flip it out and let line out and let it sink naturally ..just watch your line on the water..u will notice when a fish strikes it will pull tight or start pulling line off the spool..set hook! this works in any lake I have fished.

I agree on the long leeder and I do really well with putting a corky on top of my hook and using a worm threader to thread the morm up my line a little so the hook hangs out the bottom of the worm and the corkys at the top. I kill the harvest trout on the cowlitz doing this and used the same method in a few lakes and done realy well

A clear water bobber, a 5 or six foot leader(very light) and a small black mosquito fl. Cast out as far as possible and retrieve it as slow as possible.  Slams em.

I always killed them with pb and floating or drifting night crawlers.... I carry so many different kinds of pb/Gulp/ect... On several occasions nothing for hours upon hours... Then you find that one magical color for the day and you can't beat them off the hook... Then next day it's different and you must start all over again... Some of my favorites in pb are nymph, pink, orange and pink power eggs... Pautzke now makes a pink glitter fire bait that has been amazing...

Eagle Claw also has a dough bait... A bunch actually.. Two buddies and I were out on a HIS dock mind you... Nothing all day and we're almost out of beer... I switch to Eagle Claw bumblebee... Had my limit in five casts after that.. Less then ten minutes and then they had to by me a bottle each to use some....  :chuckle:  We left 30 minutes later to get more beer and bbq with 3 limits.. Some nice holdovers to boot...

The drifting/floating, worm/nightcrawler way has been very successful... Some of my biggest fish have came this way... Not only trout either... Got some big cats, bass, perch, and such from doing so... But just remember after a certain depth the inflated worm will no longer be inflated... And in the perfect depth they only last so long till you can't inflate them any more..

I use 6-8# main and 4-6# leader.... I will never use 2# again... I've lost too many big ass fish on 2 and 4# that I even use 6# for leaders depending on where I'm fishing... I even have one pole set up with 10# main and 8# leader for the right places...  :twocents:
