I fished area 6 with my dad on thur-fri and then with my brother and his buddy on sat. Weather was great, water conditions were great and the fish cooperated. We caught all our fish on anchor on the outgoing tide, no action drifting. There were plenty of boats out and lots of people were getting their fish. We didn't get any toads, most were in the 20lb class with on 40lber in the mix. In 3 days we hooked 9 and landed 5 with a few more bites that didn't stick. All in all great weekend of fishing!

Headed back out for the last 2 days in Area 6 with a buddy of mine. Fishing was decent we went 3 for 4. 2/2 on anchor and 1/2 drifting. No pigs but good eaters, one is the smallest, cutest lil 'but I've ever seen caught. Weather was good, a bit of rain and there were far fewer boats out than any other point in the season. They must have been at Sekiu? :dunno: We also hooked 1 big Ling that burried my buddy in the rocks. It was a good end to a fun hali season!

Very cute indeed !!! Way to put a dent in freezer space !! I was skunked both days and I was all over the place, were you guys east or west of the hook ?

We were west of Ediz Hook. We drifted the outer edge of the bar just past the 3 humps on the incoming and then anchored the far west edge of the bar on the outgoing. Heard some good reports from the guys fishing inshore on anchor between Freshwater Bay and the Hook in the 60' range. This was my first season fishing out of PA, usually I would go out of Sequim (John Wayne). I really enjoyed it! PA is a great fishin town, lots of friendly folks around and they like to talk about fishing. It was bit disheartening to hear the longliners were back at it, I thought they got their window before us and that was it. I didn't know they kept fishing later into the season.

That area is really good or at least it has been in past years, I have caught tons of halibut over that way. I was a bit worried this year though with the Elwah River puking silt for weeks and weeks wasn't sure if that area would be the same so I never went there this year...guess I should have, sounds like it was pretty good again this season. How deep were you on anchor ?
Oh well there is always Canada to fish for them, and then next year !!

We were anchoring pretty far out on the bar in 100' with 500' of line. We used the down riggers to get our lines down with chum bags right above the balls. The murky water was sweeping in and out with the tides. It was interesting to see, one side of a riptide would be murky with 6" of vis while the other side would be clear green water with 20'+ of vis. Several times through out the season it was murky when we first anchored but once the tide started moving it would sweep the murk out. During the derby weekend we couldn't hold anchor anywhere out there, shallow or deep. The little bit of time we spent in Freshwater Bay the water was pretty clear, it only got murky at the east end near the river mouth. Next year I want to make the run out to the offshore banks and give those a try.

I only made it out there a couple times this year as my boat is kinda small for the big water but the fishing was unreal, Like everyone says you spend more time running out there then you do catching fish, The game wardens boarded our boat one time and asked us what we were using and we said bait mostly and he said put on a pipe jig, they are cheap and work super good out there, caught the rest of our limit on one in short order. I want to learn about more of those banks as well, I hear of the prairie is supposed to be a great spot but don't know where to find it !! I bought a bigger boat to fix up to use for tuna one of these years, I have always heard that tuna fishing is unbelievable so I have to see for myself !!
I'll have to try that downrigger fishing for halibut, seen a few folks doing it just never tried it myself, I hear a few derby winners came from using that method !! I got a lot to learn thats fer sure !!! ;)

Anchor fishing with dr's is pretty relaxing vs jigging those big heavy weights all day. I've been out to the prairie and the SW corner 1 time each and yeah the fishing was lights out. But I hear ya about needing a boat to do it. I was in a 23' Seaswirl that belongs to my brothers friend. My bro's 18' hewes could only handle it on the best of days and even then its pushing it. If memory serves, the prairie is about 8 miles NW of the SW corner and about 38 miles total. We caught some nice lings out there. From what I hear there is some great salmon fishing to be had there as well (big kings are the rule.)
Tuna is definately on my to do list! I missed a chance to go last summer in my bro's friends boat. Hopefully I will get to tag along this summer for a trip. They make it sound like a blast, run out and go for tuna then fish salmon on the way back in.
