Title: Whitetail muzzie blues hunt
Post by: mtman on May 20, 2013, 08:10:32 PM
So my goal this year is to get my first whitetail. I put in for the foothills quality muzzy tag because I like hunting the Tucannon and think I can kill a good buck if I draw. Since drawing a tag isn't a sure thing I want to have some back up choices. I don't really care if I'm hunting on the eastside of the blues or the west or the early or late seasons. I was curious how many guys have done this hunt on public land and had success. I have hunted the Prescott unit on the westside during the muzzy season but it seemed to be mostly muleys. Have also hunted the lick creek I would think theres some whitetails in there just haven't seen any.

I have been thinking of trying the mt view or couse during the late hunt. I just don't have enough experience in those units. I know both of these units have good numbers of whitetails just don't know how many of them are on public land.I will probably take the whole early season off or a couple weeks in the late season so I think I will have enough time to find a decent deer. Just wondering what unit I should invest my time in.

Just my  :twocents: start knocking on doors and secure some permission. You are better off spending more time in the late season for whitetails. Areas down there you see almost all muleys during early season you see tons of whitetail bucks in the late archery/muzzy season. Most does will have a buck with them.

Most of the good whitetail ground in Mt. View sits outside of the national forest on private ground.  I had a cow tag in the 1013 elk unit (Mt. View excluding the Nat. Forest) I had permission from a couple landowners just south of the national forest ground.  While I was in there I saw a few whitetails and one shootable buck.  I have seen lots of mule deer on the public part of Mt. View, but never any whitetails.  I have also hunted the Couse unit several times for cow elk and that unit would be much better whitetail ground, but it is almost 100% private.  I've been thinking about muzzy hunting Mt. View as well, but being limited to whitetails would be a challenge.  But there is some good steelheading to be had that time of year on the Grande Ronde, so if you can't find any deer you could go wet a line.
