I just started getting interested in it late last season and want to get more into it. Seems like a good time!
-
I love crawdads!!!!
sent from my typewriter
-
:yeah: My favorite is to go in after them. Especially in the river when a lot of people are around. Pull up a crawdad and everyone goes " :yike: wth is that....you didn't get that from the river did you!" :chuckle:
-

I'm cuckoo for craw daddies, but I haven't been successful getting any, believe me, I've tried. I would love to hear any good tips on how to get these guys before I loose my mind. :yike:

Twin Lakes in Smokey Point has a ton. Go around shore at night with a spotlight and a net
-
My friends and I used to snorkel for them in LK. WA.. We would swim along with a mesh bag and turn over rocks, then catch them with our hands. We used to load up and then have a big boil. Good times! It was pretty cool when the bass would dart up and nail them as they tried to swim off. Might have to do that this summer for old time sake.
-
I have a pot. I just keep forgetting that I have a pot :bash:
-
I just checked my string yesterday, I think i found the mother load.... I had 15 in one pot, thing was loaded!.... all decent size too, takes about 100 of those little *censored*s to make a meal tho....
The MT lakes have the biggest mud bugs i have seen yet, gonna hit those up soon.... Definetly a good beer drink checkin traps after work....

Used to go out with my dad at nite around Halloween time on a low tide in Astoria. We'd just walk along the shore by the railroad tracks using a lantern and throw 'em in a gunny sack then have a big feed! Jeeze those little buggers were good. My dad would tear the tail off then suck the juice outta the body part :yike: then chow down on the tails. I couldn't ever do the juice part. The females with eggs added a little extra flavor too. The traps we used were cylindrical with a funnel shape opening on each end and a salmon head or two for bait. Always wanted to make a couple traps but couldn't figure out how to make that damn opening :bash: Aaah the good ol days.
-
I used to live in Sliddel, LA. We would buy them in 100 lb sacks, nothing like sucking heads and pinching tails. They are really good with plenty of beer too! Wives would make the leftovers into et tu fay. I'm pretty sure I spelled that wrong :o
-
I am having a hard time finding any with size. Does anyone know any decent spots around the Kitsap/ Mason county area?
-

You wouldnt believe where you well find them, i dont know your area very well, but just find any creeks are pretty rocky, meaning decent size rocks with slow pools of water and throw out a trap and see what turns up... we had test pots all over where i live in the last few weeks, were just now starting to find the mother loads..... lol... its addicting, checking your pots, its like XMAS morning...
-
All I can find are the little ones. Not like the ones on the north river. Thats for sure.
-
Okay, so if I were to put some pots in a lake (on the eastside) what would some you guys use for bait. I need to be successful or I'm going to hang this hobby up for good.

bacon
-
Just about anything. Catch a perch or sunfish...throw that in there. Just make sure you check the regs and have pots marked and all that jazz. They will fine you for improper gear pretty quick.
-

especially if you are also interested in metal detecting. 8)

Try a slice of cantalope or watermelon. A tuna size can of cat food seems to work as well.
-
From the link posted above:
Q: What kind of bait should I use to catch crayfish?
A: Bait is a very important issue. I've read many people's advice about people recommending such things as chicken, canned cat food, liver, bacon, sole, or something rotten. Every time I see this I shutter! Think fresh and understand that crayfish are picky eaters! Some of the best baits I have found so far are Shad, Herring, Salmon heads (gills in), and cod guts. Basically fish, fish which are oily or have oily parts. The bait must be fresh or fresh frozen. Stay away from all fowl and land animals or parts of.
I always thought bacon was good, but this guy is the expert and he doesn't recommend bacon, so...................

Definetly a good beer drink! :brew: We need to try that crawfish smelly jelly! I bet that will be the ticket! :o

That's a given  :chuckle:

I tried fish flavored canned cat food in the past. So far I've been skunked every time. I think I will cast a line and try to catch a fish of any sort and stick it in at least one pot.
-
Lets see some home-made crawfish/crayfish/crawdaddy/mudbug/yabbie pots!

I have been mud buggin like a som biatch the last few weeks and get a little butter dish and drill half inch holes all around it wire it off in your pot stuff it with chicken or chum or what ever you the heck you want to use for bait and they well come.. you got to find them, its a big difference to have your bait in that butter dish then just sittin out in the open, they can eat you bait from outside the pot if its not in the dish... night and day difference.. and that is your craw fish tip of the day!... and once you catch your first your hooked!...
-
Salmon heads are great....the only cost $1-$1.50, and most seafood places have them. There is enough on them to keep the 'dadies in the pot until its pulled. I catch them in good numbers over here on the eastside. I set traps right after dark, then get them at first light. This helps prevent theft which has been an issue for me in the places I trap. I would only ever use fish in a trap, chicken, rancid stuff, and old frozen fish just dont work as well as fresh fish. :twocents:
-
Just got out of the shower from a night of craudadin'. It was cut short by two cops....and boy were they are work of art  Apparently Twin Lakes is a county park and closes at dark. Anyway, here is what I got. 5 from a pot, and the rest caught with my hands...Breakfast in the morning
-
wow that one is a booner.... i checked my string last night and had 14 in 2 pots so not that great, but i am stalk piling them and re baited so today's pull should be much better.... I got crawdad feever..... :chuckle:
-

Nope, Shohomish County. And there were 6 in the pot.....One I found later :yike: :P
-
When i was little i use to cut the tup of a pop bottle off and put it back inside staple it and pole a hole in the top of the bottle tied a string and some microwaved bacon and tossed it in a stream by bigger bolders and I would get 3 to 5 in each 24 oz pop bottles. Not sure if its legal but I was 12.

Holy Sheep Chit. :yike:... that is a heck of a pull there... was that out of a trap? dam that one looks as big as a lobster... I am going to be targeting those big boys, i know where there holding its just a matter of getting the traps in those waters... Man i just keep going back to that picture, that is a big boy.... :o.. I tell ya pulling a full pot of Daddies with some big boys in it is like the equivalent to shooting a big buck!...
-
Good memories of catchinig them by the bucket full all over in the creeks of Mill Creek, WA. An attorney friend of the family would occasionally buy them from me along with all the golf balls I would pick up.
-
Oh ya we found some crawfish honey holes the last couple summers! Lookin forward to this years finds! :IBCOOL:

We pulled 4-5 Gallons in about three hours this weekend on the *Censored* river. There were some hogs in the bunch.
-
I'm heading to the Tucannon River this weekend with my boys and was hoping to catch a few with my boys. Do you just pick up rocks and grab them before they get away? Do their pinchers hurt? I have memories of doing it when I was really young, but too young to remember much. Thanks.

We tried the chicken vs fish theory. Fish, on average, doubled the production of the chicken. We had to pull the trap with fish in it every 45 minutes because it was getting full.

Did you have your bait in bait containers? How many were you getting a pot? Did you make like a chum? I have done that and it worked good..

No we just threw some freezer burnt filet's in the back of the trap. Our best was 35 and next was 20, the best we got with chicken was 10, they were however in different locations on the river so take it how you want.
-
Do you put them in the current, or off to the side in the slower water?

35 :yike:.. Thats a hell of a pull, my best has been 15 in one pot, but i havent been down on the river your at... Did you guys get some jumbo's?
And to the other guy, we havent had much success with fast moving water, we have done the best with slow current with rocky bottoms.. :twocents:
-
We did far better in slower water with lots of cover, mostly logs and overhanging brush. The pots we tried in faster water kept coming up with fish trapped in them but no bugs.

There wasn't any room left in the pot! There were hangers on the outside as well, pretty crazy for our first attempt at new water.

Butter or no butter?
-
Okay....I'm throwing this out there because I think the competition is stout.
I will ship, on my dime, one bear salami (when it is done later this month) to the holder of the largest mud bug. You have until the last day of August to submit your entry. Pics must accompany entry on this thread with a ruler visible to over all length. Forum members can decide....is it nose to tail or tip of extended claw to tail. Anythign else?

Bacon is good bait, but instead of a backpack full of beer i would go ice chest, 2 reasons i dont like to disturb the beers, they get foamy and 2 i like ice cold beers.... But as long as you got Beer you well catch mudbugs.... Dont bring whiskey cause you might catch Skabies!.... :yike: especially in Okanagon county!.... :yike: :pee:

Man that is a whole mess of mudbugs you got.... Well were going to have to hunt for that 8-9 incher just might take the cake for big daddy of the year... :yike:
-
I went out the other night, set my pot and slept in my vehicle. My alarm went off at 0600 and I got up and walked to where I set the pot. I get there and I start pulling it in. About 20 feet out it gets hung up on a snag. I try for a good half hour to get it free with no luck. My thoughts were that with it being out all night I should have a decent amount in my pot. I ended up going swimming to retrieve it. It is not very warm at 0630. I was having a hard time figuring out what was colder, the water or the air. It didn't matter. All you guys know what I am talking about. :bash: Embarrassing. So after a few minutes I managed to get it free from the fork of a downed underwater tree that I had securely lodged it under in my attempt to free it from the shore. After I pull it and myself back to the shore I look into the pot and there is one crawdad. One. I took a picture with my trophy and practiced catch and release. Maybe next time they'll feel sorry for me and help me out.
-
Man....you guys are hauling them in. That is one impressive pic with the cooler full. Nice job.

Thanks guys, I'm just fortunate to have some property in the family that happens to be on a killer river for these guys. Found out they do not move at all when the sun is on the water. We got 90% of that cooler full within the first few hours of the day, after the sun hit we were lucky to pull 6 from any of the pots.
-
Been setting my crawfish traps out in a undisclosed location in the creeks of monroe and keep getting skunked but finding some interesting critters in the trap besides crawfish, got a few Sunfish, large mouth bass and catfish. Going to try my luck in lake washington this weekend.
-
My little honey hole doesn't get good until the end of July. The family can fill a 100 quart cooler in a couple of hours. No pots required. A fishing net and picking them by hand. It's a blast!

One thing I figured out a couple years ago at Pearygin Lake,
I could not believe my pots were coming up with just a few Crayfish after an all night soak, yet the bait was gone. Then I talked to a guy who is there allot. He said as soon as they eat your bait, the leave the pot. I was amazed, you mean they can get back out? He says sure, try soaking your pot for 4 hours instead of all night.
Four hours later I had a pot loaded with crayfish.
-
well thank god we got Crawdadin........ cause drawing permit is a nightmare..

There's a lot of folks who will pick your pots for you over there too, happens to us every year....some people are just too lazy to bring their own pots.

It appears that thefisherman is in the lead.

I'm headed to Buffalo Lake July 3rd. Supposedly it's one of the best crawdad lakes in the state. I'm making it my quest to go there and try to be successful for the first time. Maybe it will bump up my confidence... and just maybe catch a monster and win big! Anyone else been to Buffalo on the Colville rez?
-
Any of you try Alder or Riffe or any other Pierce county lakes?

Used to be the best lake ever for crawfish. I don't think that's the case anymore. Really went down hill for a while there. I wasn't sure you could still even legally catch them there. What is the limit now? Used to be no limit, then it was 10 lbs a day.

My uncle went last year. He did pretty well in about 4 hours and they were jumbos. The limit is 5 pounds a day per person, not that great, but I guess the bass fishing is killer. If it wasn't for the curiosity of the bass fishing I probably wouldn't waste my time.
-
how are they at baker lake?
need to make or buy some traps!

Well that's cool. At least is sounds like it's picking back up. Used to hammer that lake for the greens, but got very poor, so kinda gave up on it. The tribe shocked it heavy about ten years ago at night and pulled a lot of the big greens and transplanted them in other lakes.

In the 80's we would regularly catch a ton of them one the south end of Baker using chicken and hand nets. Most were 5-6 inches with a few larger.

Thank you, and returned.
Im still baffled that both of these spots didn't produce.

First time trying this, I bought 2 traps. My second and third time out ever, last week, I pulled 39 and 34 craw dads out. This one is from Friday.
-
Looks like a good solid 7 1/2 to me.
-
Got another cooler full over the weekend, but nothing over 7.5in.
-
Put out a few test pots this weekend and pulled a 27 and 17 count out of 2 spots I didn't think would hold much so not bad.. still nothing over 7.5 here but I know where the big daddies are just haven't got to that hole yet.... so what was the end date of this derby sept 1st for the biggest?...
-
Okay....I'm throwing this out there because I think the competition is stout.
BUTTER!
Last day of Aug.......so yeah....Sept 1 for submissions is fair.

Has anyone tried Beaver Lake in Issaquah? I've got a trap but haven't put it out this year. Never found anything last summer. :bash:

Well, finally did it. Me and the ol'man went to Buffalo Lake on the Colville Rez. What a beautiful, quiet lake. Dropped the pots at 11:30. One was baited with old frozen smelt and canned cat food and the other pot was baited with an old slab of frozen king salmon and canned cat food. Then we attempted to do some bass fishing... nada (I know they're in there, we just didn't try very hard). We were getting kind of bored 2 hours in, so we went to go check our pots. The one pot with the smelt was packed! I couldn't believe my eyes, there wasn't a trace of smelt left and I think they were eating on the styrofoam it came in. The other wasn't as full and the crawdads never even touched the salmon. We emptied them in the live well and put the pots back out. We anchored under some shade and waited. Then we came up with an entertaining thought. We hooked a piece of chicken (that I brought for our lunch) on a hook and set them on the bottom. Waited for about a minute and there would be at least 2-3 crawdads hanging on the chicken, then we'd bring them up real slow. We caught several that way. What cheap entertainment! All in all we caught 104. Some were good sized around 7". 104 sounds like a lot, but really it was barely a snack for the 2 of us, but they were worth it. They were better than any lobster I've ever had. We are definitely going back again soon. I would highly recommend newbie crawdaders to go to that lake to get one's confidence up, it worked for me. :IBCOOL:
-
Southpole is hooked.. :chuckle:..... When you pull a full pot it just blows my mind everytime, crawdads are just cooler then chit..... Good work man!..

I don't see why not.

Look for a more rocky shoreline.....I've see/caught squat where there is mainly silt.
-
That's where we made sure to drop our pots, somewhere rocky or around somekind of structure. It worked out well.
-
guess i cannot complain for my first run
-
No bad KC, keep lurking around test pots in the water your fishing and you well find the glory hole... bait them up and let soak for about 4 hrs, they say dark is the best, i have to disagree... I think smackdead in the middle of the day when its hot out is the best, dump the pot where the sun is shinning right down on your pots and you can see the mudbugs all around your pot its pretty cool... dont let soak for to long cause they well get out...
-
That's where we made sure to drop our pots, somewhere rocky or around somekind of structure. It worked out well.
. I was just wondering how deep did you set your pots? Thanks.

Hey Carl, about Beaver Lk having crawfish. I heard there's the Louisiana reds in there? They were put in there years ago illegally . If you do run some test pots let us know if its true? Thanks.
-
Huntincouple,
I'll try and get over there and drop my pot while I fish. I'll let you know what turns up.

will get out
ok good to know!. we tried a better spot with HUGE rocks all over the bank, lots of cover, saw big ones all over, tried catfood on a 10 hr soak all nite, NOT ONE. catfood was not a good choice.

That's frustrating investing time like that to get skunked, I've been there. I would try a couple different types of bait in each pot. I did cat food & smelt in one pot and salmon and cat food in another. It's a good thing I did that, because the cat food didn't work so hot but the smelt did, there was nothing left of the smelt and the pot was packed. I would try some kind of fish and maybe some chicken? Now, the million dollar question. When a guy finally finds a bait that works, will it work in other lakes as well? Hhuummm...
-
yep im going back to salmon heads :yeah:

Elkpiss mentioned herring working well too, you might try that if you could get a hold of some.

tomorrow I will take pictures of them, I'm too lazy and tired right now. :chuckle:

Sounds good. Are they shrimp traps or crawfish traps? One would work for the other I imagine..? I think Im going to build one soon, love lil projects.
Was thinking something along the lines of this trap. But with galvanized steel wire. Flat with an V opening on both ends.

Thanks Ill check out Wholesale and Cabelas. The ones at White Elephant were almost a hundo if I remember right.
-
They're "crawfish" pots. I got these photos off the web, but that's what I have.

the upper one was a little more money and the second one was $30 at Wholesale. They both work great.
-
Anyone know a good place around the Tri-Cities?

Ok cool, Ive built one like the bottom one before, was hard to keep it stationary in the water. Kept wanting to move around because the circular shape.

I only paid 10-12$ for mine... shrimp pots work to..
-
$30?? :o :o the round ones are UNDER $10 anywhere!!
Yeah, I see that now. I bought that round one 6 years ago at Wholesale in Burlington. I was there already, I wasn't going shopping anywhere else and I needed it right then and now and didn't care about paying $30. Why don't ya jump Smossy, he thought a guy had to spend a $100 on a pot :o :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
Talking about the round, cheaper style pot, I don't care for them as much as the heavier square one I have. I don't care for the clips that hold it together, however It's nice when you have to empty it. Also the material is pretty flimsy. I had that pot out in a lake with otters and beavers and it got smashed in the middle by one of those darn rodents. >:( . The heavier square pot is constructed well, I like the side door entrance just fine, and it's got a nice little bungee strap at the bottom for your bait, and I believe it sits good and stable at the bottom of the lake when you set it :dunno: (hope you all love my run on sentences). The square pot caught more crawdads at Buffalo, so now I'm convinced it's the better pot, regardless of the bait used :chuckle:
-
I been using the Frabill traps. The rectangular one was $25 and the large cylindrical one was $18. I seem to catch more with the smaller rectangular one with opening. Pulled 27 out of it after sitting over night. The first time using the cylinder one the latch failed and I lost 8-10 of them pulling it into my boat.
-
Yeah, that latch blows on the roundies :(
-
Tri State Outfitters has both kinds. I need to grab a few.
-

Yep, that's where I bought both of mine (Tri State in Moscow, ID)
-
Tri State. Good call. I think I am going to Cabelas in about 30 minutes I will check there also. Now that I have a boat again I am on Roosevelt with the family this summer and will have to catch some of those bugs.

No you don't need any kind of license of any sort. Someone's pulling your crawdad leg. :chuckle: You will need a pass for the rez I believe.

Yep, all you need is a pair of goggles and something to put them in.
-
Hope to hear of the great catches of crawfish over the weekend! We gots our string out for an overnight soak. Hope its good? Good luck to all the crawfisherman of Hunt-Wa!
-
I had a dream last night about catching crawdads. I was diving into these weird swamps with rotten alder trees growing in them. I accidentally fell in, then thought, what the heck I'm in the water now, so I started to dive for them. The only thing was I couldn't get the big ones unless I was in Eastern Wa. Wow, I don't know what I ate or drank last night, but I'm going to have to do that again! :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
Southpole that made me laugh!!! We made it out to check our test pots and had fair success. Caught some 3 inchers and one that went a strong 7 inches. This area will get some more attention in the future. After making it safely back to the ramp we named it Columbia's deadleast catch after picking our pots in the 14' V hull alluminamum boat in god only knows how big of waves! Lol
-
What're you guys using for bait?
-
Carp and Shad for bait.
-
Crawfishin in the blood here!
Looks like you have a mixture of native and non-natives.

That one from Buffalo looked to be a non-native.
After reading through the 10 pages, did I miss the 3 1/4 inch rule for Signal Crayfish, the native in this state.
The measure is from the tip of the tail to the tip of the head.
So if they are Signal and under-size you have to throw them back. But if they are the non-natives you can't throw them back and have to dispose of them.
-
See page 131 of the fishing rules for pictures and identification of non-native crayfish.
-
Crawfishin in the blood here!
Looks like you have a mixture of native and non-natives.
The ones with the blue and white at the claws are native for sure. The smaller ones could go either way? :dunno:
-
34 for today, the biggest was 7 1/2''.

atfulldraw, you have pics of the catch? Pics or it didn't happen! :chuckle:

I snorkle for crawdads. Mask, snorkel and a plastic gatorade bottle with the end cut off is all I need. Usually get enough for a good sized meal but Always wanted to try out a trap.
-
I would just walk the streams and turn over rocks when I was knee high to a grasshopper.
-
I love crawfish and have lived in the NorthSnahomish county for a few years now and i have tried several lakes and got nothing If anyone has any tips on lakes that carry crawfish i would love some info or help and advise thanks For topic Goodluck
-
68 to hand today, nothing over 7 " but still not bad. The bait we used was chicken drums, chicken liver and pork fat. They all worked well.

More south snoho, but we used to get them in Martha and Silver lakes about 30 years ago.

Has anyone tried Tapps Lake? We have a company function there Friday and I'm wondering if there are any bugs there. :dunno:
Thanks, carl

Bump.....anyone still chasing the lead on this?

Bump.....anyone still chasing the lead on this?
Yeah, I'm still chopping away. We're planning a trip back to Buffalo but it won't be until later this month, I hope. That's the only place I know that has the crawdad mega size potential to get me in the running for the bear log. I think we had some good sized dads from the last trip, but I didn't have a measuring devise to prove it :'( .
-
Bump.....anyone still chasing the lead on this?
Took the last couple of weekends off, but I'll be back out the next couple of weekends chasing.

Ill probably through a pot out tonight... Havent had to many pots in the last couple of weeks, to much going on but they well be soaking soon...

Crawdadin has me so frustrated. I've got to be doing something wrong. I've put pots out in several king county lakes, a river, even in kapowsin in pierce county. Used trout, chum salmon, chicken, even fuel brined chicken, bacon, lunch meat, tuna you name it. Obviously I don't mind putting in the work, but at this point I think I need some direction.
-
On the shallow side with a rocky bottom. Not gravel bottom but rocky bottom.

How long are you leaving the pots soak? What kind of trap are you using? When are you putting them out?

I'm using the Frabill tubular type traps and I have one of the 12x12 ones too. Time of day varies, I've soaked overnight in one lake, most are early morning when I head out to fish but not always, two or three times in the afternoon. Usually let them soak for at least two hours before checking them. Some get up to a four hour soak.
-
Well, went out on Friday night to camp and crawdad but my night ended prematurely by a dust storm. Left camp at 1am and pulled my pots. Got about 20 and two just over 7inches. I tried a different spot and noticed this time that over half my crawdads only had one claw. Is this normal?
-
I'm thinking its more of where I'm putting them. I've read that they like rock bottom with coverage like downed trees and such. But I've also read sandy bottom with vegetation?

I use one of the Frabill tubular also. It's the larger one though. Do you use bait boxes? I didn't have much success with that one until I built some bait boxes. I would tie them with twine and suspend them (keep them off the surface of the trap) and place about 4-5 inches from each entrance. I went from catching 3-4 to getting about 10-20 per four hour soak.
-

Rocky bottoms and not too deep. I've been having pretty good results in about 3-4 feet of water and not so much when I have them deeper.
-

No go on the sandy bottom said with confidence. They live under rocks. In the streams and lake shores you can pick up the rocks to find the crawdad underneath them.

Sweet catch. The last crawdad trip we did, some of the dads had one claw that was bigger than the other side. I was wondering if they "shed" there claws and evidently grow new ones?

My theory was maybe there were more bass in the area. I did see a lot of fish. This was only my thought though and not based off of anything. One of the larger ones had what looked like another claw growing back. I think you can see it on the one in the picture posted earlier. I may have to google and see if they shed their claws.

They might rip their claws off of each other as well?

Believe it or not, from my time diving freshwater and messing with fish and crawdads....most bass, largemouth and smallmouth, will take a crawdad only tail first. We would swim along and the bass would come right up to you. If you pulled a 'dad from under a log and gave his body a 1/2 twist while holding onto the tail it won't kill them but make them twitch nicely. You can drop it right in the water column and the bass will dart in a grab it. Every time they would take it in, spit it out, take it in, repeat until they got it just right.....tail first.

Well after looking it up, looks like all the reasons we assumed are legit. They can lose them molting, battling each other or from being hunted/protecting itself.
Usually I only get 3-4 out of 30 with one claw. That last time more than half only had one claw out of 20.
H20: Makes a lot of sense, if they didn't, there would probably be a lot of one eyed bass swimming around.
-
I am assuming they loose there claws in Battle.. Have you seen how aggressive these suckers are... Pure Warriors, they well fight to the death well tell atleast a claw gets ripped off... Put out a few pots this weekend and didnt get nothing over 7.5.. I noticed that there starting to get soft, there heads that is?.. I am thinking that 9.5 is going to be hard to beat.. Im going to try to throw a few pots out at my glory hole this weekend while i set some cams in my elk spot... Praying the big daddy.. The season is winding down... lol :yike: :pee:

Awesome haul!!! I'm going to congratulate the winner also. Probably not going to make it back out before the 31st. The smoke from all the wildfires are killing me. This was my first year trying and I learned a lot. Wish I would of started 20 years ago. Thanks for all the info people were giving me and a great thanks to H20Hunter for giving more determination to get out and put pots out!!

Here we are closing in on the end of awesome season of crawfishin!!!!! Hope to see the granddady of all soon????? Good luck to all poundin out the last pots of the Bear Salamie Run!!!!!. Next season the crawfish should have to be boiled to the natural color of dead crawfish red then measured. That way a pet crawfish from a aquarium can't be entered into the Bear Salame competition??? Even if you catch and release it due to pollution it should have to be boiled to crawfish red. This will prevent aquarium raised crawfish to be entered into the Bear Salamie grand prize! :dunno:
-
Looks like all I need is shipping info for the winner.
-
BTT......waiting on shipping info.

I see Elkpiss didn't make it. :'( You might have to send the log prize to the second place winner... who would that be?

Got out of the bush Saturday from Elk hunting... Boys i tell you i threw every kinda Bait, trap, pot, stinkbait at thems sons of bitches and all i could come up with was a 7 3/4 inch mudbug... which was the biggest i caught all season but thats not gonna make the mark of 9.5... So good job to the winner, i am coming to the conclusion that a 9.5 inch mudbug is a real trophy... There is always Next season..!.. There were days of elk hunting I wanted to go check my crawdad pots more then elk hunting... WTF?? :dunno:
:bash: im addicted to this chit... :bash: Pretty bad when i got a screamin bull coming in to my calls and all I can think about at the time, is where and how to catch a 9.5 inch mudbug.. :bash: & we did kill that elk.. lol

I have not heard from the current mud bug title holder............waiting..........waiting..........but for how long?

I was hiking along a nature trail here in west Vancouver when I came across a family gathered near a small creek near the trail head.
I approched them and asked if they were fishing (the water is less than a foot in most places, except this one part where the water pools at the bottom of a small falls.
Surprised me when they said they were crawfishin', and had half of a two gallon bucket caught...with BIG ones!
The two little girls (approx 5-8) were doing all the fishing, and they were using a simple fish hook and line with small chunks of Oscar Meyer hotdogs. They'd wait for the craws to clamp on with their claws, and apparently they won't let go. Then you just pull 'em in.
I've been meaning to go there and try it myself, but by the looks of their bucket, there wouldn't be many left!

I've heard people putting bait in panty hose, lowering it down in the water and when the crawdads would grab it they can't get off.

I didn't think my trophy could be beat. Just waiting for everybody to give in.
-
Oh.........its a done deal...........Mzangara......please PM me your name and shipping info......your tasty prize awaits!
-
Congrats Msangara!!! That is a awesome crawfish and one I will be working on beating next season. Like Elkpisss stated that's like killing a 400" bull elk or a 200" buck!
-
I have a real nice place to drop a trap on my lake. It has consistent 7 to 8 inch ones every year. I will be back to defend the title next year.
-
Well mudbuggers....it is officially over. Done. Kaput. PM from our winner with name and address has been received. Package will be sent out next week.
-
Thanks for making it interesting H2O! We never pulled any booners out of our spots, but we never left with less than 100 bugs in the cooler. Not too shabby for only having 3 pots in the water for a few hours. If we do something next season I want to see a total weight category added along with biggest bug. I would be willing to add some smoked fish or the like to the prize pool, just to make it fun.
-
No worries fisherman83........next year if someone will have me I'd like to make an overnight and help pull a few pots and down a few brews. I'd love to bring the boy, camp out one night, and return home with some bugs for a big boil.
-
Real big thanks to H2O for fireing up the competition! I can see
this crawfish derby getting real big with more and more participation from more members!
-
It would be a drive from Lk Stevens, but my family owns 25 acres on the North River just outside of Cosmopolis. Hit me up next year and you are more than welcome to come down and join us for the weekend. Quads and buggin during the day and a few beers and a campfire in the evening.
-
Till' next year, hasta la vista, Baby! :mgun:

Good derby Guys, Good Derby... Tell Next Years Mudbuggin..! Thanks H20 for donating the prize.. Next years prize has to be a pack of bear stick too and something else funny/cool to spice it up....
Tell Next Season!.. :llam:

Sorry for the edit..............Just realised the winner may not want his name and address posted for all you :chuckle:losers :chuckle: that are lacking in mudbugging skills to start following him around to learn his secrets.

Lets see some home-made crawfish/crayfish/crawdaddy/mudbug/yabbie pots!

So any suggestions for places to try down in the Vancouver area?
I'm thinking maybe Lacamas Lake. Main issue with Columbia River and Vancouver Lake area is simply pollution. Not sure how comfortable I'd be eating stuff out of either...
-
What do you use for a bouy for the trap? That the next on the list to get . How do you keep people from messing with your trap?
-
I'm ready for round 2!! Got a few more pots and a pontoon boat to venture further down river. We should do something for the most bugs by weight too.

Just about any stream, river or lake/pond with a stream in and out will have some population of craws

Was talking to a fish biologist last night, he indicated he wouldn't think of eating anything out of the Columbia (down here), Vancouver Lake and tribs, or Lacamas Lake. Fortunately, he did give me a few ideas.

Im ready for season 2! :whoo:
-
Im in for it,just a few more degrees on the water here and pots are out
-
Gonna make a few of these up this weekend with 1/2" hardware cloth. Hope I can get something here in King County. Might give the traps a try out east if I tag along with another HuntWA member on a last chance at a spring Tom. Any recommendations on a good size opening for the funnels? Was thinking like 2" diameter maybe 3"?

Hello everyone. I am back to win round 2. I already had a great catch with some big ones. Just so you don't think they are pets I cooked them before I measured them.

Anyone ever do any crawdadin in Lake Meridian in Kent. I have been fishing Kokanee in there and just today was thinking I should throw a trap or two out and see if I can pull any out of there.
