Well, last week I finally managed to find some Spruce Grouse, so I've completed a task I set out to do some years ago - to photograph all of Washington's native grouse species - and to photograph them all right here in our state.
Greater Sage-Grouse
Columbian Sharp-tail Grouse
Ruffed Grouse
Spruce Grouse (Franklin's variety)
Blue Grouse, both the Sooty phase and Dusky phase

I think you have more work on your hands. You forgot White-tailed Ptarmigan.

Thanks, everyone, for the replies & kind words.

Well, I didn't forget about them, I just don't think of them as a grouse because the are not called "grouse" by name. Someday maybe I will set out to photograph all 3 of North America's Ptarmigan species!
By the way, I have photographed White-tailed Ptarmigan, but so far I have not done so here in WA. Maybe later this year? Here is one from Montana last fall - it was starting to turn from brown to white.

on the humor side, I'm hyper- reactive, you say "BOO" , I jump and holler, walking a skidder lane yesterday, ruffed grouse flushed 3 ft to my right while I'm looking for bear sign, I hollered!! like to think it was Boo Yah! but more like BWaaahh!! never had one flush that close!!

Shawn. I'm sure you'll complete your Washington grouse quest soon . . . Dusky Blue Grouse are perhaps the easiest of any WA grouse to both find and photograph. on the humor side, I'm hyper- reactive, you say "BOO" , I jump and holler, walking a skidder lane yesterday, ruffed grouse flushed 3 ft to my right while I'm looking for bear sign, I hollered!! like to think it was Boo Yah! but more like BWaaahh!! never had one flush that close!!
Yeah, back when I hunted Ruffed Grouse (quite avidly, I might add) they came close to giving me a life-ending heart attack on many occasions. Darn things wait 'till you're practically on top of 'em, then explode. Probably the hardest wing shooting I've ever had, especially when you factor in the dense cover they inhabit.

wow.....
You not only got all of the species, you got really beautiful pics of each species.
It's obvious that you know what you're doing with a camera...... My pics never come out that nice.
Well done!
