Title: Build me a long range rifle
Post by: cwuhunter on May 24, 2013, 10:45:59 PM
under $2000, something capable of 700 yards. pretty open ended, thinking of piecing together a new rifle just because. I do have a scope to throw on, but would not mind buying another. Im talking trigger to stock to break.. Im pretty set on caliber so that is not important

Can't go wrong with a Tikka T3 in 7mm IMO.  Picked mine up new for just over 400, dropped a 300 Leuppy on it and bang steel with out to 1K all the time.  It's very light and packable and very accurate without a bunch of messing around.

I've always liked the tikkas, just never needed another gun so never got one... will be considered

My savage 10 FCP HS Precision will tag milk jugs at 1200, straight from the factory with a Bushnell Elite on in. Everyone complains about the Accutrigger, but i like it.

I would probably look at a stiller 700 action in the caliber of your choice, then add on a lilja barrel with a vais brake.  Set in a McMillan stock.  Could probably piece it together on specials/deals and get it right around $2K.
For an auto loader, not sure I can think of a system for sub $2K long range other than a trued Druganov.

i would go for the tikka and spend big bucks on the scope and mounts.  if any money left would get a new barrel custom built, it will help the accuracy big time.  mike w

Savage with the best rings and scope you have money for.  7mm Rem Mag.

Love my Accutrigger.

I am doing the same...

Here are a few items that I am looking at.

Still have not decided on a caliber.

I thought this too when I started looking, but in reality you would be over $900 for the action, another $900 for the fluted lilja, then another $200 for the break, all the bedding work (~$200) and then you still have trigger and a McMillan stock would be $450+. We are talking about a $2700-$3000 gun right there in my math. For $2k that would be a steal.

I think for $2k or less I would go with a blueprinted 700 action with a lilja or bmcark barrel. Go cheaper than a McMillan stock, something like a bell and Carlson or greybull precision (made by bell and Carlson) and splurge on a nice trigger. That will put you very close to $2k and will probably end up being a great shooter if the smith work is good. I'd go with a .30 cal or bigger if you want an "all around" gun. Good luck with whatever you go for!

I called Stiller last week and they advised not taking any orders for the next six months to a year.

Interesting.  Didn't seem that long ago (2 years?) you could still get a long action for right at $700.  It was a better cost to buy an action like theirs than it was to buy a factory rifle and then strip the action and send to the smith...priced out it was about $200 less overall than buying something new from Remington.

I just helped a guy put together a pretty nice 6.5x47 Lapua for less than $1000 without optics. Not surprisingly we used a Savage.

If you build off of a Surgeon action you might come in withing budget. Send the action to Benchmark and let them do the barrel work. Then you'd have a couple hundred bucks to pick up a stock.

Not trying to be a jerk here but Surgeon?!?  Those actions are about as Spendy as they come. $1300 for a repeater short action. About the same for a LA. The action and barrel alone without any smithing would be over the $2k mark. All I'm saying is do lots of homework and price quoting you can to know exactly what you are getting into. Otherwise disappointment is sure to come. Good luck with a build, I'll be excited to see what you come up with.

If you shop around you can find good deals on actions. You might be surprised.

I'm selling my 300 WSM for $900 if you want the cheap and easy way out. I'm bored with it so I'm moving on.

With the scope?

Sorry, no. The scope would add a little more to the price. ;)
