Headed over early this morning hung a couple cameras in the taneum. Saw 16 elk 2 nice looking bulls and a bunch of cows. Bulls had some good antler growth for being pretty early. Can't wait until September.
-
H20hunter you ready for sept? Big steep country no road hunting from the pink FJ.
-
Hope you pattern a good one for yourself D-Rock. Probably have different animals in there as season gets closer. Nice to see animals in the area though I bet.
-
Always nice just to look at elk. Can't wait to go look at cameras next month.
-
I'll be right next door in the Observatory hopefully with a bull tag this year. Good luck this fall bud
-
Someone in are camp should draw a permit this year. My dad has 10 points this year another guy has 9 points. Keeping are fingers crossed.
-
Now that H20 finally got bear we can do more scouting.
-
Heading up this weekend to hang some cams myself. Me and a buddy gonna load up the UTV and go freshin up the salt licks.
Good luck on the draws fellas. We are in the same situation, couple guys with 7 and 8 points. Hopefully we get one.
-
Salt licks who would do that type of thing :dunno:
-
No....I'm not ready. I need to spend some quality time at the archery range and getting some miles in with a full pack to get in hunting shape.
-
Salt licks who would do that type of thing :dunno:
They work wonders!
-
I'm sure they do.
-
Hope to see you dwarfed next to a huge elk laying on the ground this year D-rock. Goodluck man
-
:chuckle: i love a good dwarf joke! Good luck D, your spyder is ready for blood.
-
It will be.
-
Two shiny new Hoyts in camp....gotta get blood on at least one of them!
-
:chuckle: i love a good dwarf joke! Good luck D, your spyder is ready for blood.
I think it's funnier when it's coming from one dwarf to another :chuckle: I'm not sure whose shorter out of Smossy or D-Rock
-
I think it is about even.
-
I think it is about even.
Very even. lol
-
This weekend i was shed hunting and pre scouting and realized it would be much easier if i was shorter. Game trails can be a pain sometimes.

Much easier to see/ID tracks and scat to :chuckle:

:yeah:
Good luck fellas! Hope u put something down!

I still can't believe people really use salt :bash:
-
:yeah: I was discussing that with my hunting crew. Salt, apples ect. It seems backwards to allow baiting of elk and not bear. To be honest I have never even considered it. It makes sense to use it near a trail cam but im shocked its legal to hunt over.

I'm just shocked that in this liberal state where you can't hunt over bait for many animals that baiting elk is allowed. No reasoning, just an observation. With a treestand and a pile of apples i have no doubt that it's very effective. My point being... not to disallow baiting for elk but rather to use same logic to reintroduce baiting for bear. :twocents:
-
Baiting bears will never happen here in Washington again.
-
I'm not sure about that. I think you might be right, but deep down I think there is a chance. Logically, baiting is a effictive form of predator management. You can see how much the population has exploded over here since baiting/hound hunting was banned. D-rock about 20 miles north of you there are bear traps in the median of I-5. All it would take is a little common sense from the general population...ya, your right. It will never happen. :bash:
-
Did some pseudo scouting myself last Sunday North of where you were at. Beautiful Country. Lots of sign. Came in from the Blewett Pass side. Wife was freaking out so it kind of limited my scouting.

You scouting for mountain goat or elk :chuckle:

You scouting for mountain goat or elk :chuckle:
Yeah, it's a pretty steep spot there. My wife was :yike:...
Just past there - you get up on the plateau - as you can see from the Google Earth pic.
It's NF9712. If you take NF9716 from Blewett Pass to Liberty, it's a left turn probably 5 miles from Blewett. Sign say to Haney Meadows. Going to go back in a couple of weeks with out the wifey...

That place was loaded with mushroom pickets a couple weekends back. Is there still a snow drift blocking the road?

Yeah, lots of Mushroom pickers - Morels or Chanterelles, I can't remember. The NFS ranger was there also. He was telling us about the three gallon bucket rule and cutting the stem of the mushroom real short for recreational permitted pickers vs. not cutting the stem for commercial permitted pickers. I forget what he said about the commercial limit.
Yeah, the snow drift was still there. When you pass the wide open sweeping area, then go back into the trees, and then there is one last open area before the plateau, there was a drift that we didn't want to go over. 40ft or so long snow drift, probably 18" deep with a cliff on one side. Not doing that. It looked like some people had been bombing through it though.
I want to go back in a couple of weeks when the snow drift is gone. Never been up there before and would like to spend a day or a weekend scouting...
-
Going up to quarts Mtn, are all the washouts fixed yet or do we still gotta go the long way around to get up to Frost and Quartz?
I just discovered the baiting for elk/deer last year. Had no idea it was legal. Found one out in the woods and decided to call the WDFW and they confirmed it. I was shocked.
-
Didn't even think about snow, Can you get all the way up to quartz?
-
Didn't go up there I stayed in the taneum unit.
-

How far over towards Ellensburg could you make it. Were you able to get all the way to the top to Lion's Rock or were the roads closed?
-

Last I was up there the washouts weren't fixed but they're pretty easy to get around in a truck if it's not muddy. The main road going up to quartz still has some deep snowdrifts in the shadowed corners.

If you look at the picture in post #33 above:
You can drive all the way up to the three little square boxes.
You can continue on into the trees.
When you come out of the trees into the last little clearing area before getting up on the plateau, there was a drift about 40 feet long and 18 to 24 inches deep. It looked like people were bombing through it. There's a scree drop off on the left, and I just didn't feel like dying that day.

There weren't any road closed signs in there? I know it is closed on the other side so I am just wondering how far in you can get.

The only sign that we saw was a warning sign. It was where the road to Haney Meadows turned off the road from Blewett to Liberty. It was 4 feet high by 8 feet wide, 8 inch high white lettering on fire engine red background. It read: Warning, Fire Damaged Trees are unstable and could fall at any time. You could be crushed and killed. Proceed at your own risk (or something very close to that). Didn't see any road closed signs.

Interesting. I might have to take a drive up there and see whats up

Forest service site says 3120 is open. Isn't that the main road over to frost that has been washed out?

I really want to go check my cameras already.

-
We can probably do that I'll ask stang also.
-
That would be cool....I'm in for gas $$, some grub, beers....and of course s'mores.

-
I'm not kidding...I'm bring s'mores.
-
We will see Dinker.
-
I'm not kidding...I'm bring s'mores.
Dang D-Rock, your hunting/scouting camps sound a little off. I could see having some elk jerky or something of the kind, but s'mores?
-
The melted goodness that is the combo of graham, chocolate, and marshmellow does give me fits when it gets in my beard but yes....s'mores. Sorry Goldeneye but your elks camps are sounding more and more boring! Having a bad day?
-
Our elk camp days are pretty much the following. No boring, but productive.
* Have good breakfast
*Hunt daylight to dark.
*Don't go back to camp for lunch and a nap as lot's do
*Have a good dinner
* Share intel from the days hunt and plan for everyone the next day
This has worked pretty well. Boots on the ground in good area during all hours of daylight produce results.
Also, yes today is not the best day.
-
s'mores sound good.... makin this fat guy drool...
-
heres how my elk camp goes
get drunk the night before the opener
wake up hung over, stumble to tree stand
put call in mouth (tastes like fireball from the first step)
shoot bull
pack out
get drunk

Sounds like you need a s'more. I'll make you one at the bbq later this month. It will be delicious and you will love it.
-
S'mores are life giving. I never remember to pack them like H20 Hunter but the wife wouldn't spend one night in the woods without a healthy supply of s'mores materials.
Our last backpack trip was six miles in on Sherman Pass in April :yike:
Wind blowing 40 knots and c-c-cold. Smores made in the tent saved the day! :chuckle:

Oh I'm right there with you. With a bear and/or deer in camp I'm pretty prone to a few drinks.

My only difference is I start drinking once I leave home and hit the highway!!! And minus the tree stand... :chuckle:
-
H20hunter I have a cool place for your camera.
-
Okay....I'll get up to my cam and pull it before we need to head over....
-
The spot I have in mind is way down in a hole .
-
Easy fella......gotta get to know you a little better. I'll grab the camera on fathers day morning.....should be nice time for a walk.
-
You sure do bring that movie up a lot. :o
-
Hey what happened to the other post :dunno:. Must be part of the server problem.
-
Dang server......I was talking witht the server the other day....we were talking about our feeling and emotions and I finally had to tell it....."I wish I knew how to quit you".
However...pesky server won't let me post pics...doesn't show me currently replies....and I already miss that random photo of the stinky bum fly blue pants ladie.
However...being an enabler...here I sit still surfing and posting.
Beats working. Maybe I'll start a thread about the database error....nah....enough already going.
-
Scouting in a few weeks :IBCOOL: stang said he would drive so we don't have to be seen in the pink fj.
-
Okay......we will get together and talk specifics when we get closer...
-
Okay.
-
im ready to go haha
-
Shotgun
-
Shotgun
:bdid:
-
Why shotgun a bag idea? I need room to stretch out and take frequent cat naps.
-
You can have the frot seat until Cle ulem then I need to be navigater to get us to hunting area.
-
Deal!
-
The little cafe in town should be a good stopping point for breakfast anyway. :EAT:
-
D-Rock.. we normally can't get up to our spot until the end of June.... is there less snow this year?
-
I think you guys hunt more of the west end of the unit. We go in down by elk heights and up. Little patches of snow two weeks ago but we made it up.
-
Are you bringing any cameras stang?
-
 wish i could get out and be looking for them critters good luck
-
Heading back over this weekend.
-
Might bring a camera or two, what are the chances of them being stolen?
-
My camera is pulled. Fresh batteries and a 8g card. I'm ready to go.
Stang.....7 am....my place for breakfast, load up, head out.
-

I'm bringing an AR for Yotes... Sounds good.
-
Sweet....should I bring my AR.....maybe an AK?
-
I'll put them over in the dark side nobody goes down there.
-
D............I picked up a bag of those huge marshmellows. Do I need to bring my boots? Are we going to actually walk around a bit? Would it be cool if you and Stang head out, hang the cams.........I'll hang in camp and watch over the goods (beer).
-
Yeah you got to bring boots we ain't rifle hunters! Don't forget the apples elk love apples.
-
Thats a good point. I was spoiled with a gate key and a rifle and started to get into that rut of a lazy rifle toting road hunter. Now...I like some road hunting myself but think I'm going to enjoy the quiet and solitude of being in a bow camp. I need a few seasons under my belt before going out when the rifle guys start flinging lead at every elk standing on the skyline you know.
-
You mean running on the skyline.
-
Running, standing, bedded, all good shot ops.

Chip shot.
With the .300 WM I use it is...
-
What about the 308 when you gut shoot bears and we have to chase them in the dark and they try to eat us :yike:. That was awesome
-
It was a SLIGHTLY low chest shot, that happened to take guts with it...
-
Keep telling yourself that :chuckle:
-
Looks like we will all be hunting spikes and cows.
-
Weather report is still looking good.....campfire and s'mores here we come!
-
-
You get the stuff H20?
-
Don't forget the Busch Lite, no self respecting road hunter leaves home without it. Make sure you guys practice shooting your bows out the window while doing 35+, trust me, it ain't easy! :chuckle:
-
We figure a Busch Ice sponsored "Top Shot" type event would be fun.
-
Bows are pretty hard to shoot out of windows ripper.
-
I'm sure he is referring to my earlier post about the AK...they are nice and easy to shoot.
-
To bring a tree stand or not to bring a stand. :dunno:
-
Thinking of putting one up..........I'd say bring it. More hands to carry and help get it in place.
-
Not sure on a location yet :bash:
-
I'll bring one along.
-
Stang is driving right? Remind me....does his truck have a covered bed?
-
Negative
-
Okay....I've got a nice tote for my dry gear just in case.....
-
I'm bringing leftover bacon for breakfast Sat morning. Do you want eggs, free range, gmo free, cage free, hippysheet?
-
Nope....I've got breakfast covered.......just show up and eat.
-
That's what I'm talking about. :EAT:
-
I hope you like quawsaunts and marmalede!
-
Hey am i still invited haha
-
I was and am talking about shooting your bow out the window of your moving vehicle. How hard can it be, I see guys on TV shooting out the window of their blinds all the time. You just need to practice doing it on the move. Practice practice practice. Jeez, you guys act like your new. Gimme anothe Busch Ice.
-
Ripper.....you make excellent points. However....One must factor in the cost of the ammunition. We can fling a lot more 7.62 out the window compared to arrows.
-
Blinds are bigger than most truck cabs.
-
Blinds are bigger than most truck cabs.
My blind IS the truck cab.
-
Excellent point. Think you can shoot an AK one handed and hit a watermelon at 30 yards while driving (of course)?
-

I can, and not one of them bigole h20 head sized watermellons but the small personal sized.
While steering with my knee and not spilling a drop of beer....
-
Impressive......have to get a few mellons and we are good to go!
-
Buckmark just became my new hero!
-
Made it up to frost and not quite quartz two weeks ago. I was pulling the trailer with the ranger and decided not to take my chances with the snow. Ended up going down lower and put up a couple cams. Not the area we hunt but couldn't leave without putting up a couple.
Heading back in a couple weeks to get them all setup.
We saw a couple dozen elk, no big guys.
Ended up with two bull permits in the group. Should be a good year.
Have a good time up there this weekend fellas.
-
One guy in are camp drew a bull permit.
-

Are you guys up on quartz usually?
-
No. I thought quarts was in manastash. :dunno:
-
Can anyone confirm this?
-
Quartz is right on the border w/ little nache
-
That's what I thought
-
That's what I thought
Oh sorry i thought y'all were up that way.
-
I believe we have to much stuff for 3 guys and 1 night.

-
Smores
-
Good times.
-
Yeo. Smores, baby bunny, and watermelon drive by. Good stuff.
-
What about big bears.
-
The bear this am was cool.
-
nice looks like fun
-
Get good trail cam pics d?
-
Yeah....did ya?
-
I hate trail cams :bash:. I got pics for every minute for a day. Good news I did have elk on a few pics.
-
Field scan setting?
-
Smores
omfg that is so gross and......accccck sticky.... yuck......my ocd just went haywire.... :yike:
-
Yummy
-
I don't know what I did but whatever it was was wrong :bash:
-
Too bad.
-
Give it a month....then we will head back. We have a more proven camera and camera operator on D-Rocks secret hunting spot.

Wildgame Innovations officially sucks, do not buy their products, you will be disappointed.
Eric,
I have some unfortunate news. I recently got out to check the cameras I set last month (Memorial Day weekend), my Pulse 10x, the replacement for my original faulty IR8X camera, was off when I arrived after 1 month of service. I charged the battery to make sure it wasn't dead and even tried a second wildgame innovations battery to make sure the battery itself wasn't faulty. The Pulse 10x has suffered the same fate as the the IR8X camera and does not turn on. I tried the reset to no avail. It did take pictures for 2 days before quitting and the quality of those is very good, but nothing after that.
I know it is not your fault, but I'm growing very tired of this same issue. Not to mention that I drove a considerable distance this particular time and to only have the camera shoot for 2 days is quite frustrating. Do you have a more reliable model that I am missing? I would like to send this Pulse back for repair or replacement, please let me know how to proceed.
Thank you,
Please reference my old case number, RMA R12XXXXXX for reference or see below in this e-mail.
-
I'll be curious as to what they say back. Complete BS that their products have repeatedly failed. Once you get it replaced you should see if you can just sell if off and be rid of the thing. Just don't sell it to anyone on the forum....may not go so well if they were to have it out for a month and it did the same thing.
-
Stupid camera :bash:
-
I really want to go check cameras again.
-
Soon.....the bro in law is up for a day trip this time around.
-
I really want to go check cameras again.
Why dont we replace yours first...
-
What cam will you replace it with? Different brand? If you don't mind me asking. Never owned one yet. Im thinking four cheapo tasco might be the best option? :dunno:
-

I put the new battery on char her this morning will see if I can get it to work this afternoon
