Title: What kind of calls for coyotes this time of year?
Post by: Naches Sportsman on May 25, 2013, 09:51:46 PM
I have never been hunting in the spring or summer for coyotes and need to rest a few days so i am planning on going hunting next weekend in the open sagebrushy areas that were closed this past winter.  Anyway, what kind of calls should I use this time of year? I know it is to early for fawn distress so i am thinking pup distress since i have seen a few pups lately?

Suggestions would be great. Thanks. I know the bucks where i am planning on hunting knocked up the does pretty good so i need to wipe out a few coyotes to keep the buck production going.

Pup distress was my first thought too.  Even if momma coyote has all her pups with her, she'll still come running, because COYOTES CAN'T COUNT!  :chuckle:

One of the pics on the Game camera SD card last week was a buck with short velvet antlers.... They're growing them!

Called in and shot a BIG male last weekend with a pup distress call.  He came running in like he was on a string!

With a bow or a rifle? Imm thinking I want to attempt to down a yote asap. Year round live target practice.

20 gauge shotgun at about 15 feet.  I saw him sneaking about 500 yards across the pasture towards come cows.  I watched him disappear in a dip, ran out, set up the call and circled down wind.  I hid behind an old log, hit the remote on the call and he came running right by be with one thing on his mind.  Unfortunately for him it turned out to be lead that was on and in his mind.  One shot to the noggin.

Nice Ill be hunting 100% bow for my entire life. So that would have been perfect range. You have one of those expensive foxpro' calls or what?

I hunt everything else with a bow and the occasional coyote.  Nothing fancy as far as calls just a Johnny Stewart PM4.  I found it at Cabela's bargain cave a couple of years ago mis marked at $60.  With my gift cards, it didn't cost me Jack.  It has been an awesome call and well worth even the full price of a couple hundred.  I have called in between 50-70 (I lost track) coyotes and bobcats with it.

In the best conditions almost 250 yards.  I rarely use it over 150-175 just to be safe.  I usually don't use a decoy but when I do it is this goofy cat play toy ball with a motor in it and a raccoon tail stuck to it.  It rolls around on the ground changing directions every few seconds.  It really looks like a critter in a world of hurt.  My buddy uses one of those rabbits on a wire thingy with good results.  Back in the day when I was getting payed by ranchers to keep coyotes out of their cattle I used live chickens tied by the leg and staked to the ground.  Nothing gets them running in blind like a real, squawking meal!

Oh wow. Thats plenty good. I dont imagine Ill be working a too much larger radius then 70-80 yards if calling something in.

This time of year I like howlers to locate.  Sneak in close and then pup distress.  Like shooting alligators on attack - ears back teeth showing.  Gets the blood pumping.  About a week before July I start to switch over to rodent or double reed cottontail distress.  But month of May threw first couple weeks of June with the howler is the most fun IMO.

I learned the other night that pup in distress can bring in a coyote as fast speeds, I actually thought it was a deer before my friend could light her up with the spot light.  :yike:

Smossy you have mail
I have the FoxPro Firestorm with black Jack decoy and the remote on mine works out past 80 yards but I usually have it within 50 yards of where I'm sitting so I don't contaminate the larger area by walking out and back to set it up. The volume is more than enough for what I need. If you need more info reply to email

I use pup distress with cpl howls. As far as a decoy I use a feather on a swival at the end of a old arrow that I modified to break down into two pieces. Light, quick easy to pack.

If u go with a e-call, always keep a hand call in your pocket. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has went out without chargeing the batteries or couldn't find the right sound without usein a hand call.
