I just did a bunch of internet research last week on the same question...
The conclusion I drew was that it's basically user preference. Closer if you're looking for a more forgiving sight picture. Farther if you're looking for a less forgiving, but more accurate sight picture.

As good a simple explanation as any I would give. However, I would replace the term "Sight picture" with "Sight plane".

As for accuracy one way isnt better then the other. unless its a forgiving nature thing for the person shooting it.
If your shooting long distance the farther out sometimes makes it hard to fit an 80 yard pin.
I set mine up 20-30-40-50-60-70 and 80 yards. Its great for showing off in the back yard but personally I cant shoot that far hunting. lucky if half of the pins work. lol.

Set it so it is sized correctly in your peep. Just a little smaller so you can line the two up. For me that helps my accuracy more than worrying about pin float or sight radius.

This is because the line of sight is at a flatter angle the further your sight pins are away from your peep. Put your sight out as far as you feel comfortable and size your peep bigger or smaller from there. You will be more accurate with it further out.
If it is more for hunting this is where your sight hanging way out in front can be a problem getting banged around and such. That is why I say put it out as far as you feel comfortable.

I just got my new sight in the mail and I am debating on how far away from the riser I should mount it. I am using a Black Gold Vengeance 7 pin sight with .19 pins. How far away from the riser should I mount it?I have black gold sight as well and I am going to remove a few pins. Too many too close together and it interfers with my view of game and shot placement. Im thinking a 20 40 50 60 and 70 is perfect. Heck my 20 pin is good at 10 and 30. A few inches change up or down. 7 is just to busy for hunting imop. I do like black gold sight and I have it set out with a small peep to keep glowing sight ring in the peep view.

mountainman would just chime in and complain about using a big word and gobbledygook. And then suggest that the testing and studies I have done to educate over the past 20 years is all make believe. Who needs the grief :dunno: clindsayrun did a fine job with his explanation anyway.
Maybe I can go through all my 30 year old books and magazines to find an article by C.R. Learn or Emery Loiselle to explain the theory :chuckle:

I think I need a slightly bigger peep myself. Id hate to mess up Bryans great work though.
What size did I give you? Easy to replace when you come down to be my storage unit / roof cleaning slave for a day. Or two :chuckle:
