I have had many Remington 700 bolts fluted over the years and hands down bar none. Kampfeld Custom has by far done the most pristine metal machining work than all the others combined.

His attention to detail is amazing, he will be building my next several rifles.

Here is the last bolt he fluted for me on a Benchmark built .338 Edge. This is the TI Fluting.

Good luck getting Carl to build a rifle, he stays booked solid with bolts these days. He has a cnc set up to do the bolts and you will be hard pressed to find better or faster bolt fluting. It's cheaper for me to have him do my bolts than to do them myself....and as mentioned, he does as good of work as can be expected anywhere.

I must be a lucky guy, Karl should be settling down in Idaho about now. At least he was packing it up and heading that way last time we spoke on the phone.

does fluting the bolt do antyhing to enhance the performance of the rifle? or just make it look cool? i have always wondered because alnmost all customs have fluted bolt and i dont see that it do much for performance, but mayybe im wrong.

Ha! Half of the crap we do to custom rifles isn't necessary in the accuracy department.👍

I have only run a few guns with fluted bolts myself but have a lot of friends that get them done on every rifle. I think it is more for looks, but I could also see how it would help trap debris that gets into the action. So I am sure that would be of some benefit and a little weight reduction "not much" but still a little.

Fluted bolts look very cool, even if it doesn't improve performance.

Fluting the bolt is like putting 26"ers and low profiles on a Tahoe. It's for the looks and because you've got the cash.

It's about 85.00 bucks if I remember correctly. I had him bed my rifle, flute the bolt, install his "Hunter" bolt knob, open my bases & drill and tap my actions base holes to 8/40.

Always good for a smart ass reply and a laugh. A nice change from the wired tight professionals I work with every day. ;/ Well, everyone but the clown that owns the M&P.

Fluting was primarily designed as a raceway for dirt and debris, especially snow and ice, to have a raceway to run into without seizing the bolt. Side benefits are lighter weight (not much) and the cool aesthetics of it.

Numbers shown around different areas of the interwebs all come back to around 1/2 ounce in weight.  Some a little more and others a little less.  flute barrel has more gains.

Thanks, though it won't be slinging 300 grainers anywhere like yours. Starting off with 180s (factory loads) and eventually go 200-230gr when I get into handloading.

I really like the deeper fluting as compared to some of the shallower  fluting options out there.

This is a spiral fluted Pacific Tool & Guage bolt I put in a super clean older. 6 digit Rem700 long action, it's chambered in 7mm WSM match with a 30" heavy Palma Shilen 9 twist. Shoots the Matrix 190's wicked accurate.

I'll take Kampfeld's flutes over this type any day.

Thinking about sending my .300 win mag Encore barrel to Kampfeld to be fluted. I talked to him and he said he could do it. Sadly, it doesn't have a bolt I could also get fluted.

I just had Kampfeld flute a 700 bolt and install a new knob. I sent it priority mail on a Saturday and it was back to me the next Friday. One week turnaround is unheard of in the gun industry and the machine work was perfect.
