I said the whole time leading up that I really wanted a big 350 or at least 330 bull and if that meant not getting one I was OK with that.  Opening morning found us sitting in the dark on the Ridge I had been dreaming of walking down for the last 4 years.  This place can not be seen from anywhere but in the shed or maybe from an airplane.  The bulls had been in there in 07 and I had a game plan.  Wait for that first little bit of glow to the east and then start slowly making my way down the ridgeline to my glassing spot.  We were there hrs early with the excitement of the first day eating a candy bar and freezing to death waiting for magic hr when a light comes up the trail.  A group of hunters proceed past me and start working down the same ridge that I have been planning on Hunting down.  Tell myself theres lots of country maybe they will take another side ridge down.  30 minutes later more hunters come down the trail and I just cant take it anymore so I move out a little early but still OK and proceed down the main ridge to where my side ridge breaks down.  We ease out into position and get set up on the timber edge waiting for day to break so we can start hunting down when another group of hunters comes right down 30' in front of us and heads on down the ridge that I am hunting down.  To far down to turn around I am questioning my decision to let the guys walk right past us into the area I was planning to hunt without staying ahead of them but bumping elk in the dark does no one any good so we wait.  As day breaks we spot some cows and a rag 5 in the open below us, we carefully move past them looking for the big guy.  On down the ridge the other hunters are way ahead and not even looking down the ridges for elk so I figure were safe as long as nothing is right on the hog back.  We spot a couple other bulls but nothing worth to hard of a look and as we slid into the vantage point where I'd killed my bull in 07.  Then off in the timber on a chaparral thicket there he was, the one I was after.  With my 10x ELs I know hes big.  I ranged him at 515 and made a plan to cut the distance to 350-400.  As we started down the bull fed having no idea we were in the area. We slid down somewhere near the 400 yard mark and I grab the spotter for a little close inspection and after something "not looking right" my heart sank when I realized...  This big 6x6, bull probably 350+ and 400 yards away had a broken main about the G5 on the right side.  It was hard to see off hand in the brush but there it was plain as day in my spotter.  8am 1st day.  My buddy thought I was crazy but I just couldn't shoot that beautiful bull with a broken main.  Wasn't fair to me or the bull.  After 30 minutes of my buddy telling me how crazy I was the bull fed off in timber and we hiked back up the ridge to continue hunting.  I kept reassuring  him, (and myself) the season was far from over...

I grew up hearing about how great the 'Shed was to hunt.  I've never put in for the tag and won't unless I give up bow hunting or they allow an archery tag.  I've read about the "hell hole" that it is, the tough regulations on carrying out your feces, and how brutal the hunt is. I've Google Earthed it for hours, dreaming of 7x8's sparring with even bigger 380" monsters.

Those photos don't look like a hell hole-they look awesome.  Are all the tales just camp fire ghost stories, whose  truth is cloaked behind the "no-trespassing" signs?  Say it isn't so.

So we spent the rest of the day treading through the steep stuff, picking the country apart and looking for another bull.  A couple hrs later the bull with the broken beam appeared on the skyline across from us and man he was WIDE, sort of had me wondering about my decision but hope was high.  We stayed in after dark and started making the climb back out to the horses for the 3 hr ride back to camp.  That night we were excited but slept well.  In the morning we would try to locate a bull that I had seen twice in my 4 days of scouting before season.
Once again first light saw us already an hour in and picking our way down a ridge I had scouted before season.  The shooting started early this morning and a we had a good vantage point so we waited to see what happened.  Within a few minutes a rag horn five appeared on the ridge in front of us... no thanks so we kept moving.  On down the ridge we spotted to bulls across the canyon from us and one looked like it needed a closer inspection so we backed into the timber and closed the distance.  The bigger bull was feeding on an open ridge 350+- yards from us and under closer inspection was a really nice bull but was just a 5x5.  After some pleading from my hunting partner I elected to pass, I was having way to much fun to quit now and notch my tag.  The bulls fed into the timber and we proceeded down the ridge.  I had to keep telling myself I was OK with not getting one because that's what I had decided, you cant shoot the big one if you already put your tag on his little brother and with a draw like this I was going to make it count.  A couple hrs later found us really down in a hell hole when my hunting partner whispered "Now I've got one you cant pass up".  Sure enough down below us was a lone bull feeding in the timber.  This was not the prettiest bull by a long stretch but he was so massive along the bases it was a really trophy bull.  He had a huge body which I thought may make his rack look a little small for what it actually was.  Range finder said 475 and once again I was planning to cut it to 400 where my Christensen 300 RUM would be hitting -6".  Just then we heard a whisper from down below us, it was a guy that had camped right across from us.  He motioned us down there and told us exactly what we didn't want to hear "theres a bull right down here".  He had spotted the bull first So we slid down beside him.  It was his move now. He was shooting a 30-06 and the shot was out of his range so he wanted to move closer...  I knew it was a bad idea but off we went with him in the lead, to fast and to loud trying to close the distance.  The whole time kicking myself for not staying put and seeing if the bull got spooked, I considered myself in range if the bull started getting suspicious.  When we broke into the next clearing down the ridge all I could see was the big bull making tracks up the other side.  I scrambled to get into position to take a shot and I watch him pause for a half of second on top of the ride before going out of site over the ridge never to be seen again.  Never in the open enough to even attempt a shot.   Within an hour it was raining as hard as it could possibly rain for the rest of the day.  We took shelter under a tree waiting for it to break but as darkness fell we started the long haul back to the horses.
That would be the last decent bull we would see.  The elk seemed to disappear with the hunting pressure.  We kept right on after it and went 5 days without seeing an elk.  Two days left in the season and we got 6 inches of fresh powder and I thought this was our chance.  I did see one small rag horn and two cows that day but it was close to dark and they were a long ways off so we waited for the last day.  On the last morning we came in from a total different area and hunted up from the bottom.  Once again in in the dark, out in the dark and the season was over.  We did not see and elk the last day.
This just shows you that sometimes no matter how hard you hunt, how bad you want it its still hunting, nothing is a guarantee, and that's why I love it so much.  Spent countless hours scouting and hunting in a 10 year draw and never took off the safety.  I don't regret not shooting one of those bulls I was just having the time of my life and it was going to take a truly once in a lifetime bull to get me to give up that tag and quit hunting.
My words of advice about the shed is if you are putting in for it you better be prepared for the hardest hunting of your life.  Theres no road hunting, no roads at all actually.  Theres no "its down hill to the pickup" all the roads are strait uphill from the hunting area, theres not even a flat place to sit in the whole shed, and here I am hoping and praying that they will put these dam results out so I know If we get to do it again this year!!

No point in putting in for it unless you are hunting Modern Firearm.  I stopped when I started archery hunting in 2003.  You read the post; it's hard enough to get a shot in there at 400 yards, much less 50.

I will fall out of my chair and choke on my whiskey/water if you don't draw that tag with those points! You will love it in there if you've never been inside the shed, good luck and get in shape.
