Title: Scouting for Bears (again)
Post by: 6.8mmARHunter on June 17, 2013, 10:32:30 PM
More scouting for Black Bears.

Camped out last Friday night up by Snoqualmie Pass (sort of) where indicated in the Google Earth picture below... Hiked up and scouted around at dusk, continued to hike to a camp spot. Scouted around some more at dawn Saturday morning.

Walking up this talus in the dark was fun (not).

Went for a hike Sunday morning (Father's Day, I really am the luckiest man alive) with my Daughter - to the Big Four Ice Caves. Spotted a Black Bear up on a snowfield. It was way cool, because the thing was frolicking in the snow, rolling around, then sliding down the hill then climbing back up and doing it again. My Daughter was laughing, she was saying that it's acting just like Her English Bulldog...

Here's a real crappy cell phone picture of the Black one. It was probably ~1000 yards away. I need a better camera.

Every weekend, I'm going out at least one of the two days... Going to figure this out eventually.

Sounds like a good weekend in the woods. Those ice caves are pretty cool as well!

That's awesome. Way to get out there and make it happen. You're doing everything right. I hope it pays off for you come August!

Good goal getting out one or two days each weekend. I have only been out one or two days since May 1. Thanks for sharing and good luck.

About 8 years ago I began to get real serious about bear hunting. I have tried calling, spot and stalk over very large areas, hunting water holes, and finding food sources. By far the biggest challenge in learning to bear hunt is actually finding them. If it was easy...we wouldn't do it. Bears think about one  thing and one thing only in the fall...food. The food source that I have found that gives me the best visibilty in actually seeing them and usually condenses the population enough to get multiple chances is finding a good huckleberry patch between 1-3 acres big. If this patch is bordered by dense woods, then you should be in business. Huckleberries or any berries for that matter have been my biggest producer.

Good Luck.
