Just throwing this out there, 'cuz I'm open for ideas.
What would you do if you had this tag?
I drew Marg bull like 15 years ago. Gates were open. It was Master Hunter hunt that started October 1 (rifle). Obviously easy to drive up Schultz Creek and take my pick.
There have been a lot of changes since then. Would you go in from Weyco? Or from East ?(I did scout that area some, but Weyco access was wide open back in the day).
Just looking for some ideas from someone who has more recent info before I get serious about scouting.

west side has limited access now......private land sale has really hurt the quality huntable area....maybe why it's now in the "bull" category and not quality. PM me and I can fill you in with more details....I drew the archery bull tag two years ago....I think I can help. I drew the archery cow tag this year......and I will be hunting a different part of the unit that I hunted for bulls.

The sold area is where we have hunted for 2 past permit hunts.
Elkhound- sent you a PM.

:yeah:
Anyone know exactly where the private property next to Weyco starts?

I'd stick to weyco if you're looking for a bigger bull but last year we got locked out for fire danger so you need to scout both. That's not to say there aren't good bulls on the east end just not as many in my opinion. Congrats that's a fun hunt.

Interesting- I was thinking just the opposite :dunno: I'm sure the reprod has grown up a whole bunch since I last hunted the Weyco side though.
Thanks, I am pretty glad to be getting back into the Margaret again.

Cross your fingers for no fire danger closure, and unless you want to scout the eastside plan on waiting until deer season to scout. I hunted the unit last year and couldn't really scout until just before the season. Also I hope you are planning on camping in a campground because there is no where to camp in the unit on the westside. Good Luck and bring us back some pictures!!!!

With an archery tag I was expecting all of the Weyco gates to be closed anyway- no vehicle access is normal for September, right :dunno:
And yes, I am very familiar with the fire closure situation and no camping anywhere on the tree farm situation.
Thanks. Just bought a new camera- tired of not having digital pics of most of our adventures.

Yes the gates on weyco will be closed regardless and I would plan on weyco being closed to fire danger at least part of the season. Scout both areas. Last year the weyco side was open for opening weekend then closed after that.
I disagree about not being able to get up to the east end until close to the season or deer season. I was up there two weeks ago and the snow is melting fast. I was up there last year all of August with basically no snow except very high in the shaded areas.
Yes bullklr there is no reprod really anymore, its almost all 30 year old timber. Some of it has been commercially thinned and it is all very huntable. Elk trails galore, so walking is easy most everywhere.

And from mid September last year, right around 5,000 feet. You can't quite make out the meat bags hanging in the shade :chuckle:

Have to agree with Sirmissalot, you can start scouting now. Memorial Day we made it to Norway Pas. It's currently closed at Ryan Lake. But will be accessible after the 4 th of July. Had the bull tag last year. We drew cow tags this year for the archery season, me, my dad and girlfrieand.

Thanks, sirmissalot. Cool pics

I also drew this tag! Gonna be a fun one!
Never hunted it before, but I will be up there alot this summer...

Anyone know exactly where the private property next to Weyco starts?
Miners Creek where there is a 40 ft. deep 100 ft. wide ditch in the road.. bought and paid for by the property owners. Weyco likes money is all I can say.
-
So your saying the miners creek area is where the privately owned section is. does anyone know if they'll give permission to hunt that part?

A buddy of mine put the wrong hunt number down on his app and was surprised to see Margaret in his results section. Fortunately he didn't draw but was shocked since he had 16 points. :chuckle:

I am so paranoid of doing this, that I read all my numbers and match them up 3 or 4 times before I click DONE. Margaret is a good tag, but not 16 points good. I bet he was glad to see that 16 years didn't go down the drain. :chuckle: I put in for it this year just because I used my quality points last year on an eastside tag and thought I would use my bull points on Margaret this year, but I only have 11.

Drew the tag last year with my son. Climbed that hill a few times :o. Fun coming down in the dark with a load. Even if it was slim picking by the time modern rolled around. Hoping to climb it this year just for the fishing, and the view. Willing to share what we learned with anybody ready to climb that hill  :chuckle:
