Title: 49 Degrees North!!!!
Post by: kglacken on June 19, 2013, 05:14:39 PM: I didnt draw but one of our team members did. We will be making a scouting trip over there but what are your guys thoughts? I have seen moose and been around them but never actually hunted them. When is the rut? What should he hold out for? What is the land like? Is calling any good? How do you hunt them? I will take any and all good advice that people are willing to share. We will be filming the hunt and I just heard from the tag holder that he wants to get it done with the bow and bring the rifle just in case. We are extremely excited and look forward to filming it and making another episode! I know there are people on here with some good information on these hunts, and I can't wait to hear what you guys have to say! :tup: Thanks!

Moose will be rutting around the same time as elk so the first couple weeks of the season will be awesome for the rut.

Honestly, I would go for AT LEAST a 150 Boone and Crockett class bull to meet the minimum of 140 for the books. There are so many moose, a 140 is about the equivalent of trying to find a legal 3 pt mulie. I see multiple B&C bulls every year not even looking for them. Look for 2+ eye guards on either side and 40+ inches wide. I would NOT get trigger happy! There are some mashers in there...

Calling them in is the best and funnest way to go for sure. Dawn and dusk they'll be grunting and crashing around in the brush. Those are the best times to call em in and get a look at them.

Archery gear is totally doable if you can get them out of the thick brush (not too hard most of the time). Get them in the timber. It can still be thick but not as thick as the brush they hang in. Calling a lot of times will bring them straight to you...closer than you'd like.

Learn how to grunt and cow call with your mouth. It's pretty easy.

Good luck with the hunt. I say hit it hard in October and look for 45" wide and double eye guards at least. Lots of moose to look at. Practice judging width. Are you guys hunting for big score or just a solid bull??

Great advice right there, for this hunt, and really all the moose permits as far as I'm concerned! :tup:

With the amount of time the tag allows and the amount to time he will be able to hunt, he will probably hold out for a big bull. This is his dream tag and he is already moving a business trip to the two weeks between archery elk and his moose tag.

Currently I'm off the entire month of oct and a few days in nov. I really would like to hold out for something impressive being I have the time. I think my Oregon deer tag may take a seat on the back burner to the moose tag! Any info would be great. My uncle drew it 15 years ago or so and shot a nice bull. Thanks to everyone for any info and I can't wait to do the tag justice.

best moose advice for you....shoot them on the uphill side of the road, besides that, you have already done the hardest part (drew the tag)
