My kid drew the Skookumchuck buck tag. I heard a rumor they will let youth hunt access Vail without a pass. Anybody in the know on that?
-
Who knows??? I dont think they have rolled out their pay to play permits yet. I'm guessing they probably wont let you in without a permit. :dunno:
-
I heard the same thing but just from randome people if things keep going the way they are you wont have to worry about a pass. Is the tag just for vail or the skookumchuck unit.
-
It's for the Skook, I know a lot of that unit is in Vail, I'll be looking at some maps in case they don't let us in Vail.
-
I saw on their site that permits go on sale June 27th. With that permit I think it would be worth it. It would also allow you to go during the regular season.

Still some good ground to hunt outside of the Vail Tree Farm in the Skookumchuck unit, but for a youth tag I'd highly suggest buying that access permit if he doesn't get in without one. Should be a slam dunk, and you'll see lots of deer. If you're looking for your kid's first buck, I've always suggested holding out for a 2 pt. on Saturday, and any buck Sunday. You could hold out for a 2 pt. both days and still have a great chance if you cover a lot of ground and do a lot of glassing. There are bigger in there, but generally speaking if a buck has made it beyond a 2 pt. in Vail he's pretty darn smart and it'd be a long shot to get a crack at 'em that time of year.
Actually, with the permits now, if you do get one, you should be able to drive in all week. If you were to take some time off work/school and go in there during the week I'd say 2 pt. minimum for sure, maybe hold for bigger through the weekend. :dunno:
Good luck, it'll be fun! I managed to draw twice when I was younger and they were some of my most memorable!

Thanks for the advice, I probably can't get a permit though, I already have one for Hancock in Eatonville, and I don't think my wife would go for another permit !!
-
I will send you a message when i return from Cali and have a map in front of me.

Lotsa huntin above between the Tennino speedway and and Centrailia, also from the Skook valley north to Tennio is all state land. Don't pay if ya don't have too!!
-
That block of state land is landlocked by Weyerhaeuser and other private land.
-
Which one?
-
And I guess it doesn't matter, cause its not....
-
From Tennino to Skook valey is open Bob....
-
I here ya with one permit all ready. To buy another permit for another hunt??? The permits are the way of the future for timberlands around the westside.

Be careful of some recent land transfers in those areas. The state has traded a lot of land in the last few years to consolidate it's holdings.

Copy that, make sure you check before entry!!

Its a bummer about the tag, but it should deter some hunters from the unit. There are good opportunities in that unit if you put the time in. You can pm me and i can give you a little extra guidance if need be.
