Title: My son drew Toutle quality elk!!!
Post by: doyourtime89 on June 19, 2013, 06:57:30 PM
So now the dreaming and hoping begins.  Of course I didn't draw any tags but I would much rather have my son draw then me.  I am really looking forward to getting out to the Toutle and scouting.  I used to bow hunt the Winston in the past but not the Toutle.  Just wondering what kind of access there will be for scouting? Can you camp in there during the hunt?  Any info on this or this hunt in general would be great.  I would LOVE to put my son in front of a nice bull.  Thanks for your time.

Which weapon did he draw for? Could definately affect access and general plans.

You can camp on the state land in the northern part of the unit. No camping of any kind on Weyerhaueser land.

Should be a slam dunk for him, fun hunt for rag horns with a few better bulls scattered around.  My dad drew the tag a few years ago and passed on rag horns every day!

Good luck!

Modern fire arm for his weapon....you were saying could affect access and general plans.  How so?  and with him being modern is that good or bad?  Were you thinking if it were archery then there my be an access issue if its to dry?

Yes, thought maybe archery and state land is often the only option. There are guys that do well on the state land, but I prefer the tree farm. Modern- the roads in Weyerhaueser will all be open. Save your scouting until mod deer season when you can drive in. Most (not all) better areas on the tree farm are quite a ways in. Should be a fun and productive hunt if you put a little time in.

My son also drew the firearm quality tag for the Toutle unit. Can't wait to get out and do some scouting. He had 9 points so he's been waiting awhile for a quality tag. I suspect we will have to be calling the same phone number for access as we would for the Winston Or Margaret units. like you we've been in those two units and not the Toutle in the past. Can't wait to get out there and start looking around.

You can camp on the dnr lands in the unit but not the weyerhauser property. Sportco in fife has good gmu maps that show where the dnr land is.

Its a fun tag. Maybe not monsters behind every tree, but a chance for a better than average westside bull. And its not every day you get to hunt around Toutle kind of numbers.
IMHO if you're not familiar with the unit, wait until deer season when the gates will be open to scout the tree farm. Your window will be short- so spend some time in there. You can mess around on the state land all you want this summer though.

I had that tag last year, it was a blast even though we were locked out of weyco.  If you end up locked out of weyco, pm me and I can help you out!

Locked out during modern? I think I remember that last year for modern deer, but it would pretty much unheard of for modern elk.
