Title: Mt. Adams any bull
Post by: couesbitten on June 19, 2013, 09:14:54 PM
So I drew my second choice elk tag for the Mt. Adams wilderness, I'll be able to hunt September 16 - 30, and am already trying to come up with a game plan for the hunt, since I was also really looking forward to the high buck hunt.  Right now, I'm thinking that I'm going to have to take the last 2 weeks of September off, go up and spend 4 or 5 days on the high hunt, and then head to the Mt. Adams wilderness to hunt for a bull.

If anybody has any info they're willing to share about the Mt. Adams hunt, I'd love to hear it, feel free to PM me.  I've spent some time up there over the last 10 years, but I'm gonna be talking to my cousin that lives in White Salmon and see what kind of info he and his buddies can share with me.  Definitely looking forward to this hunt, only 5 tags issued, so should be pretty quiet and it'll be nice hunting unpressured elk.

I would say goodbye to the high hunt this year. You have every other year for that hunt. I would focus on the bull tag, kill early then maybe the high hunt can still happen. Its a great tag, goodluck

forego the high buck and concentrate on that bull tag.

*censored*! I know that's the right answer, but I was justifying it by telling myself that the best days to hunt for bulls in the rut were going to be from the 20th - 30th anyway.  You guys are right, thanks for talking some sense into me, I'll focus on elk first, and then hunt deer when I can, which will probably end up being general season.

YOu do know that most of the south end of the wilderness burned up last year?  Not a lot of feed for them elk this year  :dunno:

You could always take 4-5 days in the general season and go high. That would be awesome. I bet good hunting too.

I had it last year... If i was you i would hunt the last week. The archery guys ruin that hunt, as there are a ton of archery hunters running the elk around the week before you will be in there.
We hunted muddy meadows all the way over to foggy flats, and over to the Killen Creek trail and all the ground in between. I spooked one elk while doing some business in the woods but i never saw it. And the one bull i did see was running away, not sure just how big it was.

We got run out of there because of the fire.

It was very hot and dry and i saw a total of 1 elk. And i put a ton of miles on my boots. The bulls were bugling at night nothing during the day.

Good luck, it is a beautiful hunt. Hope you have better luck than i did. Luckily i did get my points back, but 15 didn't help me this year.

Don't worry bout the archery guys, they wont effect your hunt at all. I hunt goat rocks, and its the exact same deal with mt Adams. Their pressure will not effect the rut activity during your hunt. Have fun, thats a great tag!

Nice area with a lot of elk. You might scout and check out the burn area as there may be a lot of grasses growing already.

Tagging along.  Congrats on this one Scott.  Should be an absolute blast!  I also know a guy with a strong back (and a weak mind) that loves packing elk meat!

Good to hear Timberstalker, guys like that can be hard to come by, but worth their weight in gold (beer) when you need them.

Cheap beer too. It's all about the Busch lite.

Good looking bull EOTR.
Couesbitten-We gotta get scouting!  I don't have any permits to waste time on this year.  Get the Busch Lite packed up.  The pack I blew apart a few years ago needs another 1/2 elk on it.  Gotta make sure the repairs made work.  Let's rock this thing. :chuckle:

Sounds good Dan, we'll definitely talk, I'll stop in next time I'm running by.

elkontherun, that's a good looking bull you shot, and would love to hear any information your willing to share, send me a PM.  My cousin and his buddies all live in the White Salmon up to Trout Lake area, and I've already started poking them for insider information. I'm planning on having a great hunt regardless of how big a bull I shoot.

Thanks to both of you, Scott
