Well, it happened. I got drawn for an any bull tag in October in the rim rock gmu. It was my forth choice so i have never spent any time over there, but can't wait to have explore it. I couldn't be any more pumped right now. I'd probably head over next week but i have this other obligation next week. I'm getting married in the Dominican republic. Once that is over with though this will be the best summer and longest ever 8) all that being said, if anybody has a favorite area i would love to hear about it. whether it be short and dirty ridge, Conrad Meadows beat creek whatever it may be, it sure would be appreciated. Also if you drew the tag and wasn't to scout together let me know. Thanks people have a great day
-
I did not draw a tag but am willing to help you scout the area. Nothing like getting out in the woods with the camera.
For the record, this offer goes out to anyone that would like some help scouting.
-
I drew this tag also! Pretty dang tootin excited. I've hunted all around that area but never much in the Rimrock unit itself. I plan on spending time over there this summer getting to know it. The thing I like about this unit is the ability to get HIGH if you want to, something a lot of those other units don't offer. Went through all my stuff last night and got the boots greased up again and put together my scouting pack so its ready at a moments notice when my opportunity comes to hit the dirt.
-
See y'all there!
-
Thats a great tag there is allot of area there to put some space between you, and the rest of the crowds.
-
Well congrats to all of you that drew :IBCOOL: Put in for the quality bull muzzleloader but no luck, oh well maybe next year.
-
Congrats Seatown and 7MM! Its a great tag. I'm over there during archery season every year and know the area well. Bulls are there, from down low to up high. Stay in touch and I'll tell you where the bulls are hiding after archery season, as I didn't draw a Bull tag this year.
I'm actually going to try and get over there this weekend to set up some of my cameras at tree stand sites that I already know are consistent cow elk producers.
Take care,
ET
-
Drew rimrock quality elk myself. This will be fun!
-
Well looks like I'll be in good company this year. My son & I also drew a Bull tag for modern. Keep a look out for a Black Dodge ram with a "Coyote Madness" logo on it. Stop me and say hello. Maybe we can get together and scout during the summer. Good luck to all that drew
-
Good luck!! Great unit and some dandy bulls in there, hope you in good shape? Where in the Dominican are you getting married?? I worked in Santo Domingo, Bavaro, La Romana, Juan Dolio, Boca Chica for 5-6 years.
-
Here's what you get to look forward to chasing around kyle.. This is my brothers rimrock archery bull from two seasons ago. Good luck and hopefully I can make it over there to do some scouting with you.
-
Oh wade you just got me drueling. I really do hope we scout together, we need to finally get out and put the boots to the ground
-
@Austrian hunter, I'm going to punta cana, which basically is bavaro. I've never been but 21 of us are going. Should be awesome
-
archery hunted that unit alot.guided my father in law to a 350 bull two years ago. when it gets closer to your hunt if your still looking for info pm me,no that unit like the back of my hand, mostly the high country though.october tag i'm assuming muzzle 1-10th

Love those bulls from up by conrad  well at least i think he came from that part of the unit. Alot of them have those characteristics with the kickers
-
Hey 7mm if you can't get people to scout with you let me know. I've never been and would love to spend a weekend with someone that knows the area a little. I'm all for exploring knew things, but experience never hurt anybody. Besides i have a lot of luck on my side right now. Lady year was my first time well hunting and me and my buddy got spikes. Now this year i drew this tag with no points (this years point only) I'm hoping this streak continues. Is it October yet?
-
I'd be happy to hit the hills with you Seatown! I'm probably looking at the middle of July before I can pull away for a day or two, and then the end of August after that. Any chance you can swing week days over there? I sell real estate for a living and week days actually are my slow time. Nice for me, terrible for getting together with other people.
-
I just noticed that you are in Bothell, so I figured we should get together in the next week or so and compare notes. My office is right by Bonefish Grill and Outback. I'm an agent for Keller Williams and I'm at my office 3-4 days a week. Lets set up a time!
-
anybody else have any rimrock bull pix
-
Started the process last week for this hunt. Been running and going on hikes with the packframe loaded down. Went and shot the 7 mag yesterday and splashed jugs at 200 all day long. Free hand shooting at 165 was good to go. Planning on getting over there in the next couple weeks. Getting pumped!
-
Just got back from the Dominican republic this morning. Time to get my boots dirty. Can't wait to very over there.
-
i deer hunted over there one season for a few day. the elk bugled all night and i saw the biggest bull of my life! Didnt see jack for deer but the elk are there. I was only maybe a few miles from the highway down low on the river bottom
-
Love hearing that kind of input. Only 14 weekends left
-
I have hunted over there twice. Seen a couple dandy bulls. Saw very few deer maybe 10 or so in all the time I put in over there.
-
Rimrock bull from a few years ago. Good luck guys.
-
anybody else have any rimrock bull pix
The Picture on my avatar is a RR bull from a couple years ago. I'm going over this weekend to check three of my trail cams and will probably have a few more pics to post. I didn't draw a bull tag at RR this year. But, I have hunted archery there for many years and always have several on my cams and run into them during the season. I'll be in an '01 Dodge Diesel, dark blue color. If any of you tag holders are over there this weekend and see my truck, wave me down and we can meet up.

Had a Quality Muzzle tag a couple years ago. Ate tag soup but seen and heard a lot of bulls. Next time I'm spike camping closer to the hunting area. I spent most my time 2-4 miles into the wilderness area. Steep and thick. Have fun.
-
Hey et, you don't know hal do you. He lives in duvall, president of Seattle chapter of rocky mountain elk foundation. You never know, it is a small world sometimes
-
Rimrock bull from a few years ago. Good luck guys.
Another with the rimrock kicker
-
Can't see it in pic but has matching kicker on other side too.
-
I'll be there as well running around during archery season with Ed and crew. I'll be making it over there hopefully in the next few weeks to get some cams up as well. Hope to see some of you hunt-wa guys out there.
-
Making a concerted evert to get over there this next week, probably Tuesday/Wednesday. Going to cover a lot of ground and get familiar with the lay of the land. Anyone else going to be around? I know midweek trips are difficult for most, sorry for not being a team player!
-
Wish i could 7mm, but i can't head over until Friday. Very excited to get there though. I've done more online scouting than i thought was possible
-
if u go on the weekend hit me up.. Im going every weekend from here out....
-
The online scouting has been very productive for me! I've been able to limit it down to a few key areas that I'm going to focus on and then branch out from there as need be. Getting super excited. I've been out bear scouting over here riding my bike and getting in shape. Going to need to be in tip top to give it my all come October.
-
Well my week day scouting trip has just been scratched due to work. Being self employed is awesome, the felxibilty can be great, but the knowledge that you can't pass up business when it calls, even if its one day before a planned trip, is very frustrating. Maybe next week. :bash:
-
if u go on the weekend hit me up.. Im going every weekend from here out....
I'm heading over on Friday beaslayler. we will be in a red Nissan titan. Probably going to spend thisfirst weekend there just learning some of the roads and seeing a few trail cams any suggestions on where to camp, don't really want to stay at a campground, is there much for spots on the forest service roads?
-
There is a few nice pull off spots off the main roads you can get a camper into or pitch a tent in. Get them early before the season starts people lay claim to them pretty early up there.

There is a ton of camp spots up thoses FS roads. Mainly the 1200 and 500 series roads. These are down lower and on the east edge of the unit per say. All near the airport.
If you want to get up higher head up to Conrad meadows. Spots all the way up.
-
I have the RR archery bull tag as well. Lots of good country to check out. I'll be up again this weekend. I will look for you. I am going solo. I will probably be up in CM area. Driving a small grey 4 door. As always, camp is Hunt WA friendly!
-

Hi Seatown,
I have met Hal. Purchased a fundraising RMEF picture he had posted up at Xtapa a couple years ago. But, don't know him personally. I think he said he mostly used to hunt rifle seasons. I've been mostly archery now for almost 33 years.
BTW, I was over there this last weekend checking three of my trail cams. I had branch antler bulls on all of them! You guys shouldn't have a problem tagging out.

Hey Justan, I'll pick you up on Thursday evening the 25th and we can do some more scouting on Friday and Saturday, 26th and 27th. Again, for any of you HuntWA guys that will be in the neighborhood, we'll be in a dark blue 2001 Dodge 3/4ton diesel. SO, you should hear us coming...lol.

Bag is packed...I am chomping at the bit.

Wife's birthday this weekend, anniversary next - my boots won't hit Rimrock until August! I will be in a white 2009 Dodge crew cab, purple lupus awareness ribbon on the tailgate.
-
These fires are definitely putting a damper on scouting. In all honesty though, there is some areas over there that could use an under burn. Lets just hope this doesn't spread to crazy. I imagine the bow Hunters are much more stressed than me. Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure my game camera went up in a blaze of glory. It is right in the middle of the fire. Who would have thought. Good luck to all the brave fire fighters. That is horrible area to fight a fire

:tup:hey seatown first congrats ! ill be in a aqua Suzuki samurai stop by lets converse about this awesome area and just totally majestic animals I love this area allways have had to give up firearms there after I was almost killed 6 years ago before daylight ! been on the bow ever since have a great season !
-
Had a very vivid dream last night about a bull working through the timber, one shot, dead elk! Flash forwarded right to quartering and packing. Woke up this morning as I was hanging the last bag of meat in camp in my dream. What a great dream! WIth fall in the air, I'm getting really excited. Have my main hunting areas narrowed down finally, and have been working out to be ready to pack that bugger out of whatever hell hole I'm sure I'll shoot him in. October 21 can't get here fast enough!
-
Some nice animals in the area.
-
Was over there last week scouting, not much activity but TONS of sign. Archery had just closed and we had a full moon so I think they were pretty holed up. I had more walk through my camp at night barking at me than I saw in the woods all day.
Heading back over this week to check out some other areas. Just saw the forecast for 1-2' of snow tonight-monday above 4000'! Keep it coming! Even if it doesn't stick around, it'll get some animals moving for sure.
Last time I had a bull tag was 8 years ago and it was 80+ degrees most of the season with all animals holed up in the deep dark nasty. Can't wait for Oct 21 to get here.
-
Bring on the snow! Had some cows and a spike on trail cam last week and heard a bull bugle not far from me. Got a MF branched bull tag to fill. Getting pretty amped up about this hunt. Oct. 21st will not be here soon enough!
-
White pass had snow yesterday morning! Keep it coming!
-
I can see snow on bethel ridge from my kitchen widow right now im sure its on divide as well
-
The anxiety is killing me. Thank god i have modern firearm to keep me busy. Bring on the snow

I need a muzzie guy to post an elk for me to look at. I'm sitting here at an open house in Lynnwood bored to tears wishing I was running around in the hills looking for animals. Need someone to buy this house today and then I don't have to be here anymore. Here is what I'm thinking about to try and keep my mind off hunting. Some are epic failures.
14 more days until camp and I've already got the gear piled and ready in the garage. FAIL.
Shot last night... again... just because. Have to stop, its to expensive and as gratifying as it is, there are no suprises out to 400 anymore. You can only shoot so many paint cans full of water! FAIL.
Took the nephew out to get him used to my rifle that he'll be using. Kid is 12 years old and shoots better than I did when I was 20. 4 leaf clovered 1" high at 100 yards with my 7mm-08. Then I made him walk 5 miles of logging roads with me because I had to get out in the woods. Good time, but FAIL.
Wife had friends over last night. Kept me awake until 2:00 this morning. Frustrating. Thought about hunting all night. FAIL
Still have a freezer of pinks and silvers I need to smoke, any good brines I should try? Bribes to get guys to help pack my elk out. FAIL
Really need to paint the joints that I caulked on the house the other day, while its warm out again. Damn open house.
Thinking about putting concrete countertops in my house this winter, anyone have experience with that?
Dog is mad, I won't be here for the duck opener. FAIL
Need to rotate my tires and change my oil.
Camo rain gear is toast, need new stuff. Need to sell this house so I can afford to go buy it. Don't want to be wet and cold hunting. FAIL
i give up...
-
sorry bout that. Just the mental rambling of a man in pain!
-
Roger that, even have the tan Chevy.
-
Here's the bull that was in the tan Chevy.
-
Wow those are some nice looking bulls.
-
I got that pic sent to me the other day.
-
Awesome Bull!
-
Nice bull
-
Thats a dandy. Nice to see a couple of excited guys in a good picture of a great bull! Way to go!
-
Pretty sweet bull
-
Congrats! Nice Bull.

-
The craziest thing about that bull is that he had a broadhead lodged in his shoulder, ouch. I wonder if there is anyone on here that had an encounter with this bull before? Good job champ.
-
Leaving Thursday a.m. to go set up camp and spend a few days in the woods prior to the 21st. Looking ahead, it looks to be a major double wammy against us with this tag. Full moon on the 19th, and SUNNY and WARM Sat/Sun. Looks like they will most likely be holed up for the first couple days anyway. :bash:
-
good luck to those that have the tag, some dandy bulls up there
-
Any hints on where the big ones are hanging out? Headed up Friday to set.up camp.
-
That is a sweet bull

Heading out in a couple hours to go set up camp and start cutting firewood. Plan on spending Fri-Sun in the woods getting a feel for whats shakin over there. Wish we weren't starting this hunt with a full moon and sunny skies! Hopefully I can update on Monday with a BBD! See you over there Seatown and bigbds61! I'll be camped on 557 or 560, probably not in plain site though. Big wall tent, brown chevy with matching canopy. Dad will be there Saturday sometime, older forest green Toyota Tundra w/matching canopy and retrofitted driftboat trailer turned utility trailer
-
I am leaving tomorrow morning some time. Should in the unit by mid day after a stop at Cabelas in Union Gap to pick up a couple of items. I plan to be camping up high off of the 1201 Rd depending on the crowd and what is available up there as far as camp sites. I will be in a big lifted F350 Superduty Crew Amber with black front winch bumper and black fender flares pulling a retrofitting 3 rail motorcycles trailer and a big CanAm 800 ATV in the bed of the truck. Wall tent is 12x16 with blue tarps that will be on it once set up. A buddy will be up over the weekend to assist with camp set up. He will be driving a newer white Toyota Tundra. Will try to look you guys up. Good luck 7mmfan and Seatown.
-
You guys got a couple days on me, i don't leave until Saturday morning. I don't remember e'er being so excited for a hunt. It has absolutely consumed me four the last several months. Good luck out there guys, 7mm and bigd. Ill be camped near s tieton river road. About half mile down there is a spur. We will be in red titan with two Kodiak canvas tents. Plus a giant bull hanging in the tree :IBCOOL:. give em hell.
-
Keep your eyes open for the wolves and get some pics if you seee them so WDFW cannot deny they are there. Good luck everyone.
-
I'll be over there in a week! Good luck fellas!
-
only picture im taking of a wolf is with my scope :chuckle:
-
Well, how is everyone doing? I've been at it since Monday morning. I jumped one bull , but wasn't quick enough to get a shot off. Hope one of you guys has some meat hanging .
-
Here's a pic of the broadhead & arrow that was buried in the right shoulder blade of the elk I posted earlier in this thread. The wound was clean, so I assume it had been shot about a week or two before I killed it during the special draw muzzle season. It didn't slow him down a bit...bugling like mad & chasing cows like normal. Would love to hear a story about how/where he was shot with the arrow.
-
Meat in the freezer! As any of you that were over there last week know, the weather was not ideal for elk hunting, and the moon was brutal until the end of the week. My dad and I did our best to get deep and high every day for the first 3 days of the season, usually hiking miles before daylight to be in position at shooting light. We saw a cow and calf, and moved a small herd late in the day on Tuesday, and saw no animals Monday/Wednesday. I talked with a couple other hunters up there and it was pretty much the same story all around.
Thursday I was beat so I decided to hunt low and close to camp. My Dad dropped me off at the trail I was going to use to access the area and headed back to camp. I walked in about a mile to the good timber and was just easing through the timber when I hear it, "crunch snap crunch, munch munch munch". The tell tail sound of an elk feeding in the timber in front of me. I was blocked by a thick wall of young trees, but could tell the animal was close. I had the wind so I hunkered down where I was and waited. About 5 minutes later I caught a flash of tan coming out of the left side of the trees about 30 yards away. I brought the gun up and tracked the now confirmed elk. I still had not seen its head. Finally he turned and dropped his head to feed again and I saw horns. At this point, all thoughts of trophy bulls and big racks disappeared, and auto pilot kicked in. Elk, bull, safety off, one step forward, shoulder in scope, BOOM! He staggers downhill about 10 feet and stands there staring right at me through the only gap in the trees. I've always lived by the rule, if they're standing, you're shooting, so I took the only shot I had and put him down for good. I made my way to him and only at this point did I realize he was a spike. I never felt, and still haven't felt any regret in using my bull tag on a spike. He was hard earned and I walked away with a ton of fantastic meat.
This all happened about 20 minutes after Dad had dropped me off. He had no more than pulled back into camp and stepped out of the truck when he heard my two shots. About 2 minutes later, I placed the phone the call to him and he climbed back in the truck and headed my way. I am lucky enough to have good friends in Yakima who were available that day so I sent out the text and within an hour I had another back and pack there to help haul. We got him out in one trip and down to their place to cool in the meat/beer fridge.
My best friend showed up Friday night and we hunted the same area Saturday, but it was now a party zone with no less than 25 people in the little basin I had been hunting. Sunday we headed into the Cowiche unit to a little honey hole. Over the course of the day we saw over 70 elk including 3 spikes. It finally came together for my friend and he got his first bull. Dad was 30 seconds from pulling the trigger on another spike when my friend fired on his and blew the herd out of the canyon. We quartered/packed that bull out in the dark and got back to camp around 11:30.
I feel very fortunate to have harvested that bull and supplied my wife and I for the winter with great meat. I also appreciate my Dad spending the whole first week with me hiking all over hells half acre and always being willing and ready to do whatever he could to help. I know my time with him is getting smaller every year so I truly cherished this time with him. He is still over there trying to get a spike, and I think this will be his year. My pack is still loaded and ready to make the 4 hour trip back over if he needs the help getting it out.
-
I know bigbds61 is working his tail off up there, hunting hard and seeing very little. I think seatown had similar results. Not much shooting all week, or during the general opener. This weather change Sunday should get some animals moving for whoever is still over there.
-
Congrats on the bull. Rimrock is not an easy place to hunt. I was drawn there last year and hunted hard daylight to dark for 12 days and never seen a bull , except the spike at 15 yards on the general opener.
-
Congrats on the bulls.
-
Nice bull 7mm! Great table fair!
