Title: Gravel roads
Post by: raydog on June 26, 2013, 07:51:54 PM
I do a lot of deer hunting from gravel roads(on foot). Almost all of the roads are very crunchy. I was thinking of wearing socks on the outside of my shoes to help muff the noise. Do you guys have any better ideas to try. I'm a tender foot so I can't do barefoot or just socks.

I used to bike in and hunt the early archery season for deer.  On a couple occasions I glassed bucks feeding within bow range of the road, and I'd slip off my boots and stalk up there with just my wool socks.  Works well, but if they bust you and you want to keep after 'em you've got to go back and get your footwear!

For general wear a pair of shoes or light boots with a soft sole may  work. I used to know guys who elk hunted in tennis shoes. The sock idea works well in a pinch, but only after you have sighted game.

If I am in area where I am worried about a deer hearing me because I am making to much noise it means I am walking to fast.  If you are going slow and glassing You should be making very little noise.    Just saying I think you may want to slow down.

Carpet. Mexicans use carpet to cover their tracks coming into the country. I figure it might be a bit quieter as well.

I made tie on carpet pieces, shag down, for walking the Weyerhauser roads down by Tenino.  Seemed to work decently, but moved shortly after coming up with this idea.

Walk on the edge of the road in the grass.  That is a lot quieter than walking in the gravel.

Grassy edges and ditches are great, if they're there.

I'd not advise walking downhill on pine needles with this setup.   :bdid:

Bears - feet is one that I have used

THere are others which are thick felt soles which strap to your boots.

I have the bearsfeet and they have not worn out yet for me to replace them.

When you get close step putting your toe down first then followed by your heel with a tapping motion sounds just like a four legged animal walking can fool deer into thinking youre just one of them, picked up this bit from reading Fred Asbell's book on stalking and still hunting. Used it in Cap forest on frozen roads could hear deer approach but never saw em in late bow season, blacktails like to spy on ya from the thicklies before committing. Kinda goofy but effective.
