Title: Apples
Post by: hntrspud on July 09, 2013, 10:28:13 AM
I recently had my supply of apples taken down. I had a neighbor with some trees. My question is, where do you get your apples for elk and deer? Do you go to the store and buy some, ask the produce guy, neighbors....? Any help is appreciatted.

My girlfriend works for a fruit company so I am lucky and have an endless supply of apples.  If you get a chance, drive over to Eastern Washington and talk to some of the fruit companies about their culls. Some will sell them to you for pretty cheap.

I grew up with a lot of apple trees in the front yard, side yard, back yard.  Not a big fan of apples anymore unless in a pie.  Apple overkill as a kid.

If you see some property with apple trees knock on the door and ask they may be willing to let you take as many as you can carry,  we always did,  less mess in the fall.

Or if you have 3 foster kids in your home all under the age of 4, then time can be an issue as well. I just wanna make the most of what very little time I will have this year

I am sure there are some and I remember seeing them when I drive there to duck hunt. I believe there are a few in Royal City and I would bet there are some in Othello. If not, you are close to Quincy so you could always go back that way and stop somewhere in the Wenatchee Valley and go home over Blewett.  :twocents:

Very good idea. The only thing I seem to see around royal city is mint, onions and grapes.  :dunno: I will be looking tho. Wonder about Thorp Fruit....  :dunno:

I am sure Thorp Fruit would but I don't imagine they would have culls which is what you want. Wouldn't hurt to give a few places a call so they could save them for you if you are interested.

The problem I've found with apples on the westside is it seems like they arent ripe until its hunting season already. I'm talking rifle season so mid october. If you could buy last years apples or culls by the tote it seems like it would be worthwhile, then use local apples when you can.

I saw a picture of the infamous graham outfitter posted on facebook where he had two totes worth of apples on a trailer, said he gets them for $50 a tote. I didn't ask where.
